our Memorial Day
“Let us never lose focus

means. It’s not about
beaches, picnics or
auto races. It is a day to
remember.”
This was the message that David Jackson, candidate for 2nd vice commander of the Department
of Ohio American Legion, brought with him to
Monday afternoon’s Memorial Day ceremony at
American Legion Drew Webster Post 39.
Jackson spoke of the sacrifices made by those
Americans in wars both distant and recent.
“They are real people with real families who
lived in real communities,” he said. “We can best
honor their sacrifice by remembering their families who have lost so much. Long after the battlefield guns have been silenced and the bombs stop
exploding, the children of our fallen warriors will
still be missing a parent, spouses will be without
their life partners, parents will continue to grieve
for their heroic sons and daughters who died way
too early.”
The families of those who have lost loved ones
should have support from their communities in
whatever way possible, he added.
“Nobody can replace these fallen heroes, especially in the eyes of their families, but we can offer
shoulders to cry on, assistance with education,
expenses and assurance that their loved one’s sacrifice will not be forgotten,” he said.
Jackson also discussed the origins of the holiday,
including a parade featuring Union soldiers and
freed slaves held in Charleston, S.C. in 1865, and
the Watertown, N.Y. celebrations on May 5, 1866.
According to Jackson’s speech, the term “Memorial Day” was not used until World War II, and the
day officially became a federal holiday in 1971.
Jackson also discussed the history of American
Legion’s relationship with Memorial Day.
American legion has always shown great pride
in our nation’s fallen heroes and unwavering support for those that America sends in harm’s way,”
he said. “Today is another opportunity for us to
give thanks. We owe it to the heroes that died and
the loved ones left behind to make sure their sacrifices are remembered and that their service to this
nation will always be honored.
“Real people. Real stories. May God bless them
all.”
Jackson was a First Class Engineman with the
U.S. Navy from 1968-1977. He served as treasurer
(2013-14) with the Department Chairman Finance
Committee and is a past department assistant
sergeant at arms (1999-2000). He is serving on
the National Veterans Employment & Education
Council; national vice chairman of the Foreign
Relations Council and a member of the National
Sergeant At Arms Club.
Married 46 years to his wife, Sharon, they have
a daughter, Wendy, and a son, John.
Jackson is a 32-year member of Post 641, serving five terms as post commander; a dual member
SAL Squadron 641, Belle Valley American Legions
Riders and Voiture Local 1523; past district
commander (1998-99); district judge advocate,
National Security, district chairman and recipient of the Robert T. Secrest Award in 2006. He
is also a member of the Blue Lodge Mason 136,
32nd-degree Scottish Rite, Valley of Cambridge, as
well as a 36-year member BVVFD firefighter, first
responder.

Southern releases graduates

RACINE — Southern
High School’s Class of

in the hallway Saturday
for their graduation ceremony to begin. Amid
a sea of purple and gold

occasionally checking his

This would be the last
moments Otto would

to take their place in the spotlight.
The Class of 2015 entered the
gymnasium to “Pomp and Circumstance,” performed by the Southern
High School band, under the direction of Chad Dodson, as proud family
members and friends looked on.
They were greeted by the administration, faculty and school board
members as they took their places on
the stage.
The ceremony began with a welcome from class president Autumn
Porter. The invocation was given by
class secretary-treasure Gage Smith,
followed by the Pledge of Allegiance
led by Kevin Perry, Student Council
president.
The Southern Local band performed “Arrows,” joined by band
members of the graduating class.
Salutatorian Bethany Theiss then
gave her address that focused on
potential. She challenged each of
them, no matter what they choose to
do after graduation, to do something.
“In life, everyone has potential,”
Theiss said.
She spoke about what a difference
just one person can make to a community.
“I would say a pretty big difference,” Theiss said. “Think about an
entire family all meeting their potential in life, or even an entire com-

Allegiance and Meloney
Victory followed with the
invocation.
Class president Christopher Long welcomed everyone to the ceremony and
class historian Breanna Bailey introduced the speakers.
Salutatorian Brock Smith
began his speech by quoting, as he put it, the great
author Kurt Vonnegut: “True
terror is to wake up one day
and discover that your high
school class is running the
country.”
“I bet you all just had a
burst of nostalgia as you
thought back on the awful
things your high school class
did to your school’s faculty
as kids,” Smith said. ” I think
that I speak for every one
of the teachers here when I
say that you may want to get
your passports ready.”
Smith went on to share
that he learned important
lessons by being the school’s
mascot and participating in
cross country.
munity. Everyone is able to make a
difference and make the world around
them a better place. All they have to
do is try.”
She went on to say that some question how just one individual out of
all the billions of people in the world
could make a difference.
“I can say with firm conviction that
I believe one person really can make a
difference,” Theiss stressed.
She explained to her classmates
that meeting one’s potential means
being successful, and success is contagious, saying: “Seeing someone else
having success makes you strive for
success, then someone else notices
you and then they want success for
themselves. It goes on and on, setting
off a chain reaction, all because that
one person decided they were going
to reach his or her potential.”
Theiss emphasized that success
takes hard work, but leads to happiness. And happiness isn’t just about
making a lot of money, it’s about
being happy with your career path.
Her final thoughts were to challenge her classmates: “Go out and do
whatever it is you love and want to
do, but do it to the best of your abilities. Start that chain reaction, creating
a better environment to live in, be
that successful person everybody else
wants to be like, be the person who
gets paid to do what they love, and
set the standards high for everyone
else.”
Valedictorian Tristen Wolfe then
“It matters not if you came
out on top or ended up at
the bottom, but that you can
share every moment with
your friends and family,”
Smith said.
“Even the path most often
traveled has ups and downs,”
Smith went on to say. “The
journey should be just as
exciting as the destination.”
On behalf of the class, he
offered a thank-you to all
teachers, parents, contributors to Wikipedia and Google
search results: ”Without you,
we literally couldn’t have
done it.”
And in closing, Smith said,
“I won’t close with a clichéd
quote on how our class may
have the next miracle doctor
or Fortune 500 CEO, but I’ll
remind you that passports
may come in handy.”
Valdictorian Kristen King
came to the podium. She
addressed the audience with
thoughts on how the class
got to this day.
“Today marks the end of
our journey through high
school. It is a day to reflect
on our accomplishments and
to remember what got us
here.”
Tuesday, May 26, 2015 3
came to the podium. He addressed
his classmates and the audience with
a message of appreciation for all the
support their parents, families and
teachers have given them. He also
addressed how he and his classmates
have changed over the years, and how
they will continue to change throughout their lives.
“On behalf of the Class of 2015, I
would like to thank everyone that is
here this evening supporting us. Our
parents and families have been there
to show us the difference between
right and wrong. They have been
patient with us for the past 18 years
and that is no easy feat,” Wolfe said.
” Our teachers have taken their time
to show us the wonders of education
and knowledge.”
He believed he was speaking
for the class when he said they are
forever grateful for the time, energy
and support they received: “You’ve
taught us important life lessons,
you’ve taught us how important we
are, you’ve taught us how big of an
impact we can have on the world
and how important our education is.
We wouldn’t have gotten this far if it
weren’t for the hard work and time
you put into giving us all of those
shoves we desperately needed.”
Wolfe had one final request to ask
of his classmates and that was to
think back to how they were as freshman and compare it to the person
they are now.
Then Wolfe read this quote from
She gave credit to hard
work, dedication, and perseverance and supportive
families.
As she spoke about family, King said the first family
children have is of orientation, the one into which they
are born. The second family
a child has is at school and
she likes to call it a family of
support.
“Our families at home,
along with our family here
at school, helped to shape
us into the brilliant young
adults that we are today,” she
said. “We should strive to
make these people (around
us) proud, but most importantly, we need to strive to
make ourselves proud. We
need to be the best that we
can be.”
King urged her classmates
to challenge themselves
and make an impact on the
world.
Special music was then
presented by Eastern High
School Concert Band. The
choice of “Fiddler on the
Roof: Sunrise, Sunset,”
seemed a fitting tribute to
the graduation ceremony.
