Weather balloon lands in Letart Falls.

ABOUT
A typical NWS “weather balloon” sounding, or data
collection, can last in excess of two hours. In that
time, the radiosonde can ascend to an altitude of
about 115,000 feet.
The radiosonde weighs around one pound. During
the flight, it is exposed to temperatures as cold as
-130ºF and an air pressure less than one percent
of what is found on the Earth’s surface. If the
radiosonde enters a strong jet stream it can travel at
speeds exceeding 250 mph.
The data is collected by the originating source to
improve forecasts, and the information is archived at
the National Centers For Environmental Information
as well as other national sources so that anyone can
pull up the data.

about to take possession
of a second.
This particular radiosonde, recovered along
the bank of the Ohio

was launched from the
NWS’s Wilmington station. It made the 137
mile journey home via
post.

Thomas, chief clinical officer at the Ohio
State Medical Center.
“We can’t sound the
alarm bell loud enough
for people in Ohio to
change their behavior,”
Thomas said, who
encouraged people to
limit Thanksgiving

and speaking with scientists at NOAA, the
verdict was that unlike
Roswell, it really was a
weather balloon.

Pleasant Valley Hospital is pleased to welcome neurologist Victor Jaramillo, MD.
Dr. Jaramillo is welcoming new patients 5 years of age and older to his practice.

“Dr. Jaramillo will be relocating to our community from Logan, WV where he spent
the last several years practicing. Dr. Jaramillo was very successful in Logan and very
active in treating both acute conditions in the emergency department and hospital
settings, as well as chronic conditions in the outpatient environment. We are thrilled
to have someone of his caliber practicing full-time in Point Pleasant,” stated Jeff
Noblin, FACHE, CEO of PVH.
Dr. Jaramillo is a highly specialized neurologist who manages all levels of
neurological care for pediatric and adult patients. He completed four fellowships in neurology including neuromuscular neurology, stroke neurocritical care, vascular neurology, and neurophysiology. Dr. Jaramillo earned
his medical doctorate from Antioquia University School of Medicine in

special weather events.
The balloon carries the
device into the upper
levels of the atmosphere
and usually moves from
west to east. It can
travel up to 180 miles
in the stronger winds of
the winter months.
According to NOAA,
when released, the balloon is about five feet
in diameter and gradually expands in size as
it rises owing to the
decrease in air pressure.
When the balloon reaches a diameter of 20 to 25
feet, it bursts. A small,
orange colored parachute slows the descent
of the radiosonde, minimizing the danger to
lives and property.
Much of the surface
area of the small white
box that is the radiosonde is dedicated to

a “harmless weather
instrument.”
When asked why there
is such a fuss of it being
harmless, Hogue replied,
“It lands where it lands,
we don’t control where
it goes. The main thing
is letting people know
it is not harmful when
they find it.”
He also said that
parts are reusable, and
the finder can send
the radiosonde back to
NOAA by following the
directions taped on the
device via a pre-set up

Postal Service.
“The battery only

‘See ya next year’
Burrow tweets after
scary knee injury
Joe Burrow was looking forward to 2021 even as
his rookie season was apparently ended by a scary
knee injury.
“Thanks for all the love. Can’t get rid of me that
easy. See ya next year,” the Cincinnati Bengals
franchise quarterback tweeted after he was carted
off the field early in the third quarter of a 20-9 loss
at Washington on Sunday.
Burrow was hit high and low by Washington
linemen Montez Sweat and Jonathan Allen after
throwing a pass, and the QB’s left leg bent the
wrong way. Burrow couldn’t put any weight on it
as he was helped onto a cart.
“That’s an injury right there to a team leader
that can take the wind out of your sails,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. “It’s not fun. He was
making improvements every week, and we were
getting the offense headed in a direction that we
thought was exciting.”
Burrow was 22 of 34 for 203 yards and a touchdown before the injury.
In a season in which the Bengals wanted to get
the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner and national
champion as many snaps as possible, Burrow was
264 of 404 for 2,688 yards and 13 touchdowns in
10 games.
“The players have responded to him, the coaches have responded to him, the city has responded
to him and all that is equally as important,” Taylor
said. “He energizes this team. He’s been a tremendous player, everything we’d hoped he’d be, and
we’ll get him back at some point. We don’t know
when that is.”
Burrow had been sacked 32 times this season,
but this injury happened after he got rid of the
ball.
“Seeing that sucks, especially when you know
the person,” said Washington receiver Terry
McLaurin, who played with Burrow at Ohio State
before the QB transferred to LSU. “One thing I
do know about Joe, he’s a resilient guy. I’m praying for him. He’s a guy that when he gets knocked
down, he comes back stronger.”
Another former Buckeyes teammate, Washington backup QB Dwayne Haskins, tweeted about
Burrow almost immediately after the game, saying: “Love u bro. Get well soon.”
In other injury news:
— Patriots running back Rex Burkhead sustained a knee injury against the Texans and had
to be helped off the field. He was later taken to
the locker room on a cart. Texans receivers Kenny
Stills (leg) and Randall Cobb (foot) were injured.
— Lions cornerback Phil Ford and Panthers
guard Dennis Daley left with concussions.
— Browns safety Ronnie Harrison, a major
bright spot of late, injured his knee on Philadelphia’s first series and didn’t return. He is scheduled to have an MRI. Eagles defensive tackle
Fletcher Cox left with an apparent leg injury and
cornerback Cre’Von LeBlanc rolled his ankle.
— Titans linebacker Jayon Brown left with
an elbow injury and left tackle Ty Sambrailo left
during the pivotal touchdown drive against the
Ravens.

BIDWELL, Ohio — On
the wrong end of a great
comeback.
The River Valley girls
basketball team led nonconference guest Jackson
by 10 points three minutes into the second half
of Friday’s season opener,
but the visiting Ironladies
rallied back and escaped
Gallia County with a
52-47 victory, sinking
12-of-14 free throws in
the final quarter.
After a trio of lead
changes in the opening
period, the teams were
tied at 13. There were
three more lead changes
in the second, the final
of which came with the
Lady Raiders (0-1) taking
a 24-22 edge with 1:39
left in the first half.
RVHS was up 27-25 at
halftime, and then started
the second half with an
8-0 run for its largest lead
of the night.
The Ironladies (1-0)
trimmed the deficit back

to five points, at 39-34, by
the end of the third quarter, and then tied it at 43
on free throws by Taylor
Evans with 2:51 left in
the game.
Hannah Jacks made a
two-pointer with 2:20 left
to reestablish the RVHS
lead, but T.J. Carpenter
made back-to-back free
throws with 2:03 to play,
tying it at 45. After a
steal by Katelyn Webb,
JHS took a 47-45 lead on
a second chance bucket
by Evans with 1:19 left
in the game.
Jacks tied it at 47 with
back-to-back free throws
six seconds later, but
Kenzie Davis made two
free throws after another
offensive rebound, giving Jackson a 49-47 lead
with 44 seconds left.
Carpenter went 3-for-4
at the free throw line
over the remainder of
the contest, capping off
the 52-47 Ironladies victory.
For the game, Jackson
earned a 37-to-34 edge
in rebounds, including

17-to-13 on the offensive
glass. The Ironladies
also claimed a 21-to19 advantage in the
turnover battle. Collectively, the Lady Raiders
recorded 12 steals, eight
assists and four blocked
shots, while JHS had 14
steals, eight assists and
five rejections.
The hosts hit 17-of-50
(34 percent) field goal
attempts, including 2-of12 (16.7 percent) threepoint tries, while Jackson was 14-of-52 (26.9
percent) from the field,
including 2-of-11 (18.2
percent) from deep. At
the foul line, RVHS went
11-for-19 (57.9 percent),
while the Red and White
made 22-of-31 (71.0 percent).
The Lady Raiders
were led by Jacks with
20 points and nine
rebounds. Morrisa Barcus was next with 11
points and eight boards,
followed by Lauren
Twyman with five points
and a team-best four
assists. Sierra Somerville

scored four points in the
setback, Madison Hall
added three, while Zoe
Milliron and Allie Holley
tallied two points apiece.
The RVHS defense
was led by Twyman and
Holley, both with three
steals and a block apiece.
Leading the way for
JHS, Carpenter scored
13 points and Evans tallied 12. Davis and Gracie
Walburn had 10 points
and nine rebounds
apiece, Webb added four
points and a team-best
four steals, while Lauren Elliott tallied three
points in the win.
On defense, Webb finished with a game-best
six steals, while Carpenter earned a game-high
two rejections.
The Silver and Black
are slated to be back on

About those
rising NFL teams,
never mind

Tuesday, November 24, 2020 7

Unbeaten Herd 17th in latest AP poll

By Barry Wilner
Associated Press

Mediocrity is mediocrity. You can’t hide it,
especially in the NFC East, where being mediocre is a compliment.
This, however, isn’t about those weaklings.
It’s about teams many thought might be making
moves toward relevance in the standings: New
England, Minnesota, San Francisco, Chicago.
Maybe even Detroit and Atlanta.
Never mind.
Thanksgiving week is here, which means the
stretch run to the playoffs is at hand. Even with
the extra wild card in each conference, it’s a pipe
dream to rely on those half-dozen teams.
Neither the 49ers (4-6), the most injury-ravaged
team in the NFL, nor the Bears (5-5), the most
offensively inept, played this week. Barring almost
inhumanly quick health improvement for San
Francisco, it won’t come close to defending its
NFC title, particularly in the NFC West, where
everyone else decidedly isn’t mediocre.
As for Chicago, it’s not unreasonable to see
the Bears go from 5-1 to the bottom of the NFC
North, which other than Green Bay decidedly is
mediocre.
New England might be the most disappointing
of these underperformers, though losing the main
reason it won six Super Bowls, Tom Brady, is significant enough to cause a major step backward.
Those who believed the Patriots were progressing after a down-to-the-wire win over the winless
Jets and a home victory in nasty weather against
a now-slumping Baltimore can’t be buoyed by
Sunday’s defeat at Houston. Yes, a Texans club
whose only two previous victories were over the
second-worst team in the league, Jacksonville.
“It’s disappointing, but we’ll turn the page here
and move on,” New England coach Bill Belichick
said. “(I) still have a lot of confidence and belief
in the team. If we just do things a little bit better,
then the results will be different and better. But,
I don’t know, we just couldn’t do it today.”
Nor on many other days in a 4-6 campaign.
Then there are the Vikings, who started 1-5
before they won three straight division games. A
home victory over the struggling Cowboys could
have established Minnesota’s place in the playoff
chase. Instead, inconsistency on both sides of the
ball led to an ugly loss.
“There are positives to point to,” quarterback
Kirk Cousins said, “but ultimately when you don’t
win, you leave the stadium feeling sick to your
stomach.”
Indeed, nausea often accompanies mediocrity.
Then there are the Falcons and Lions, really
outsiders to join in the postseason chase even
before Sunday. Atlanta had won three of four
under interim coach Raheem Morris after an 0-5
start. So it lost to a quarterback making his first
NFL start, Taysom Hill, and the Saints, in a relative blowout. The Lions were even worse, getting
blanked for the first time in 11 years at Carolina,
which broke a five-game slide using a QB also in
his first NFL start, P.J. Walker.
Hill mainly has been a special-teamer and
Walker’s last start was in the XFL.
“We have really good guys here,” embattled
Lions coach Matt Patricia said when asked if he
feels as though he’s losing the locker room. “We
have guys who are fighting every day and working really hard. That’s the one thing – I just love
this locker room. These guys are strong; they
want to win. They’re trying to compete. They’re
trying to do everything right.”
Maybe they are just too mediocre to achieve
that.
Also stumbling in Week 11 was Miami, which
had won five straight but lost at Denver. The
Dolphins’ defense is for real, and they are well
coached. But they lack maturity.
That said, they seem much more solid than
the collection of current pretenders mentioned
above.
Finally, there’s the case of the Cleveland
Browns, who are 7-3 and quite possibly headed
to 10 or 11 victories and ending the league’s
longest playoff drought — since the Browns’
only such appearance during their reincarnation, in 2002.

Blevins, whose scoring total represented a
new career-high, also
tied Richardson for
game-high honors with
nine rebounds. He also
had a team-best three
steals and a blocked
shot.
Shull led Rio Grande
with five assists.
Senior Bryanth Farr
(Beloit, WI), a transfer from now-defunct
Holy Family College,
had his best game in
a Rio uniform with 18
points. He finished
7-for-8 from the floor
and 4-for-4 at the free
throw line.
As a team, the RedStorm shot just over 60

percent in the opening
half (20-for-33) and finished the game at 59.3
percent (35-for-59).
Reed and Temple netted 28 points each in a
losing cause for Great
Lakes Christian. The
duo combined to go
21-for-41 from the floor
overall, 6-for-11 from
three-point range and
8-for-8 at the foul line.
Whitney Harris
added 12 points for the
Crusaders, while Kevin
Wright, Jr. had a teamhigh five rebounds and
a game-best four steals.
Reed also had five
rebounds and Jordan
Martinus handed out
four assists in a losing
cause for GLCC.

The Thundering Herd didn’t lose on the field, but they dropped a spot in the rankings nonetheless. The Marshall football team ended up
17th in the last Associated Press college football poll, which was released Sunday evening. The Herd (7-0, 4-0 CUSA East) ended up being
idle last weekend after having their home contest against Charlotte canceled due to a coronavirus outbreak. MU entered last weekend
tied with Coastal Carolina for the 16th spot in the AP poll. The Thundering Herd — the lone unbeaten program remaining in Conference
USA — returns to the gridiron on Saturday, Dec. 5, when it hosts Rice.

Losses at stake as basketball season arrives
By Eddie Pells
The Associated Press

As more than 300 teams prepare
to start a season that will look
nothing like any before it, the conversation isn’t so much about who
will be cutting down the nets at the
end of March Madness as much as
whether anyone will cut down the
nets at all.
If some team, any team, does
climb a ladder in Indianapolis —
and the top candidates include the
usuals, with No. 1 Gonzaga, Duke,
Kentucky and Kansas among them
— then consider the season a success.
Anything short of that, and nothing less than the future of college
sports could hang in the balance.
This is the new world created
by a COVID-19 crisis that is mushrooming to more than 190,000 new
cases a day across America just as
college basketball gets set to tip off
its season Wednesday.
Teams will play truncated schedules — many cut from 31 to 27
or 25 games — after truncated
preseasons. It’s a shrunken, evershifting and still perilous grid laid
out with the health of players and
coaches in the forefront of everyone’s mind, but with an unspoken
belief that the show really does
need to go on.
The end game is the 68-team
extravaganza known as March
Madness, the event that was wiped
off the calendar eight months ago
in a stunningly rapid turn of events
as the seriousness of the pandemic
set off alarms across the U.S. It
cost the NCAA around $375 million, and sent shockwaves around
the entire college sports landscape.
“The bottom line is that American higher education, not just athletics, is hemorrhaging like never
before,” Duke athletic director
Kevin White said earlier this fall to
the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic
Committee, of which he is a member.
The NCAA is already making
plans to turn this year’s postseason
into something much different,
and much less, than it has been in
the past — proposing to hold all
games in a single city, most likely
Indianapolis, which is where the
Final Four is already scheduled for
April 3-5.
Though a vaccine appears to be

on the way, there’s a good chance
that in March, fans and bands and
mascots will largely miss out, much
the way they’ve been missing out
inside arenas and stadiums that
have hosted recent NBA, MLB
and NHL seasons, as well as the
current and oft-interrupted college
and pro football schedules.
But the reality is, the people college basketball really needs at the
arenas are the TV crews.
CBS and various cable affiliates
are scheduled to pay around $800
million this season to televise
America’s most frenetic sports
celebration for three weeks each
March and April. That’s on top of
the millions the biggest conferences generate in media revenue
during the regular season.
Most of it is money earmarked
for distribution by the NCAA and
the conferences to the schools,
which combine hoops and football
revenue to fund smaller sports in
their programs. A staggering 116
of those programs have been cut
from 34 schools at the Division I
level since pandemic hit, according
to the USOPC, whose very ability
to field an Olympic team is largely
dependent on the college system.
Another year like that would
have the potential to mark the
beginning of the end of the college
sports system as we know it.
“When you look around the
country, this has potential to force
some schools to recalibrate what
they’re capable of supporting,”
said John Tauer, the coach at St.
Thomas, the Minnesota school
that is moving from Division III to
Division I. “It’s a complicated question that every school is going to
answer differently.”
So, how to get from November
to March?
The Ivy League has already
bagged it, canceling all winter
sports, which means there will be
no Harvard or Yale come tournament time, and none of those
eminently entertaining stories
about how smart guys can play
hoops, too.
Most everyone else is planning a season. Many teams are
planning shorter road trips and a
smaller footprint. No trip’s success — not even that of a quick
bus ride — will be taken for
granted. Testing protocols are in
place and, as the college football

half, and coach Doug
Marrone said Thomas

season has shown us with the
cancellation of a handful of games
every weekend, all participants
will need to be able to adjust on
the fly.
“Those thoughts creep in every
day,” Florida coach Mike White
said. “I wonder how many games
I’ll miss this year. I wonder how
many games we’ll have our five
starters out there, 12 guys available.”
When teams do start playing,
some of the top players to watch
will be Jared Butler (Baylor),
Cade Cunningham (Oklahoma
State), Ayo Dosunmu (Illinois)
and Luka Garza (Iowa).
Garza averaged nearly 24 points
and 10 rebounds as a junior last
season. The pandemic complicated his decision about whether
to stay in school or go pro. He will
now enter the season as one of the
rarest birds in the college basketball ecosystem — a senior who
also has NBA lottery potential.
A mere eight months ago, those
kind of issues — namely, the
mass migration of players to the
NBA after a single year of college, or no college at all — fueled
that perennial cauldron of debate
about the overall health of the
sport and the need for reforms.
COVID-19 makes that seem less
important now.
Though there’s always a lot of
hand-wringing about the outsized
role of money — passed both
legitimately and under the table
— in college basketball, there is
no debate about this: Without any
games, the money will dry up and
college sports as we know it will
be reshaped, too.
And so, even with positive cases
of the virus surging and the health
risks as dire as they’ve ever been,
teams scurry to fill in blank spots
on their schedules and get ready
to put on a show. There was no
Midnight Madness to mark the
first practices of the season, but
that was never the goal.
The goal is March Madness —
even if it’s a TV-only event.
“We don’t know a lot of things,”
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski
said. “But we know we’re going
to have March Madness. We
know we’re going to have a regular season. We just don’t know
much about both — and it’s a hell
of a way to run a railroad.”

Peat left with a concussion and Deonte Harris
left with a stinger.
— The Packers lost
center Corey Linsley
(back) in the first quarter of their overtime loss
at Indianapolis.
— Cowboys cornerback Anthony Brown
(ribs) left the game in
the fourth quarter of
a victory against the
Vikings.
— Broncos safety Trey
Marshall injured a lower
leg in a win against
Miami. The Dolphins
didn’t announce an injury

to Tue Tagovailoa before
game’s end, but the
rookie walked gingerly to
the sideline after being
sacked for the sixth time.
Ryan Fitzpatrick closed
the game for the Dolphins.
— Jets running back
La’Mical Perine and
offensive tackle George
Fant left with ankle
injuries in a loss to the
Chargers. Los Angeles
defensive end Uchenna
Nwosu (shoulder) and
cornerback Casey Hayward Jr. (groin) both left
the game.

US Rhodes Scholars
chosen virtually

The U.S. Rhodes Scholars for 2021
were elected virtually this year for the
first time as the coronavirus pandemic
swept across the globe, though that
didn’t extinguish enthusiasm among the
32 students who won scholarships to
Oxford University.
The Rhodes Trust announced the winners early Sunday, which include 22 students of color. Ten are Black, which ties
the record for the most Black students
elected in a single year.
Shera Avi-Yonah, a 22-year-old Harvard
University student, said she found out
about her win Saturday night while she
was sitting in her parent’s basement in
Lincoln, Massachusetts.
