Children need to be taught kindness at 81! early age. I can think of
no better way than by pointing out
that lhey must include classmates and
acquaintanCes who aren't especially
good-looking or popular. .This can
make ~ big difference in lhe way a
child thinks about relationships
throughout his or her life.

giant - lbe Armenians against the Turkll, or as Dole put It, "1'hlB Is
the David vs, Goliath vote. "
: "Turkey, Goliath, bas all the P'OQps, all the pns, money, an
embassy, American business, lobbyll\ts, the wbole nine yards," Dole
said. "They can all speak for Turkey, make Turkey's case.
"Armenia has none of the above;" Dole added. "U the SeDate
doesn't speak for Arinenla - who will?"
Byrd's role as defender of the Turks aeema more pra1J118tlc yet
there are thoae who say his own roota In tbepovertyofWestVIrglnla
allow him to Identity with and admire the people of Turkey.
Byrd says that his torfans, at this late date, dilagree whether there
was a genocide of Armenians - a claim which Dole diunlB- as
nonsense - and warns or tbe ftelltlve Impact the resolution would
have on the Turkish ~Qvernmenl.
There are scholars wbo say the Armenians were vlctlma of an
alinost contlnlous civil war, dlse-.. and famine and that both
Cbrtstlans and MusHms suffered an "tmmellll!" number of deaths.
Presumably, It Is this side that Turkllh ~t Tui'IUt Ozal
0\ltllned to leading senators when he. vtsted ,Washington last month.
In seeklnl passa1e of the resolution, Dole was also buckln&' the
White House, which did not waJIIIO offend the Turkilh IQverDmenl.
,Tbe United States has long maintained bases and llstenln&' posts In
Turkey and Is considered one otthemoslloyalalUes Ina troubled part
of the world.
· ·
It Is this tear of ottendln&' Turkey, wlllciiByrd and lame othen
expressed In public and whlcb Dole laid mOre pve as UJelr reason In
private. which worked 11alnst the resolution.
Byrd stated his concern that' the l'elj))utlon would be an affront to
pteaenl day Turks . becaulle the senate would be calllpg their
"forefathers criminals."
·
·
But Dole replied, ' 'I am not moved liy the pll!ll that we should not
punish the sons and daughters of thole wbo may llave psrtlclpated In
tbe ottoman Empire In the slaughter of Armen.lana,
"I am moved by who might have been the sona and daughters of the
1.5 mUilon Armenians who were slaughtered," Dole said "What
about lbelr sons, what about their daughters, If any?' '

Hannan Trace, Green c1abri Rio

By G. SPENCI!lB OSBORNE
Trlllllne Staff Writer
Sometimes, eno111h Is eno111h.
Hannan Trace's Wildcats, havIng been thrown to the mat twice
In the rep Jar season by North
GaiUa, took revenge on the
second-seeded Pirates by USIDI
tough defense and solid work on
the boards to post a 65-58 victory
In the upper-bracket sectional
championship game Tuesday
night at the University of Rio
Grande's Lyne Center.
, "This Is the first time we've
been a good team since Christ·
mas," said Wildcat head coach
Mike Jenkins. "We Improved Ina
coUple of areas, such as on the
hoards, bli I otherwise we played
\hem the same as we did at out
place." he added.
It took the Bucs 65 seconds to
get their offense In gear, and they
did It with a three-pointer from
the left corner by junior guard
Brian Stout. On the strehllh of
two more treys from junior point
guard Chris Tackett (who led all
scorers with 19 points) and
sopllomore forward Darin Smith
midway through the first frame,
North, led by seven. But the
Wildcats slatted clawing at that
lead, tying the game twice In the
last minute before junior forward Todd Boothe took a pass
from point guard Eric Lloyd on
the left baseline and canned a
jumper at the buzzer. Hannan
Trace led 20·18 at that point. ·
A three-spot from the left
corner by junior pard Riehle
Cornell and a baseline jumi>er by
Lloyd In the first 90 secolids.of the
second quarter Inflated Trace's
lead ·to 25-18. But the Pirates
started to neutralize tbe peskl·
ness of the Wildcats In the paint
when Tackett squeezed a layup
on a steal between layups by 6-5
center D.J. Hammel to cut HT's
lead to one with 4:08Jeft. In spite
of the Pirates' shooting troubles
that plagued them throuJhoUI
the game, Tackett had no problem
a
one-and-

ones that caine on Wildcat

forward Jason Black's first folll.
Those shots gave North a 26-25
lead wttb 3: 29 left before
halftlme.
Twenty·three seconds later
Tackett picked up his first foul.
which helped set the stage for
Wildcat pardJ.J. Bevan to hila
jumper from the top of the key to
Jive the Guyan five a 27-26 lead
with 2:46 left. Twenty-three
seconds later Bevan fouled PI·
rate relief forward Casey Staton,
and Staton went to the line to
shoot tlte one-and-one. Staton
sank the first but mllsed the
second,,and the game, whl<;h was
knotted at27, stayed that way for
six seconds, because Pirate
forward/center Richard Haney
grabbed the rebound and scored
on a layup to Jive North GaUls a
29-27 advail ta11e.
Black, wtw led- the Wildcats
with 17 points and 10 rebounds,
nailed a jumper·from tbe middle
of the key to score two of his six
first-half points and tie the game
at 29 , Consecutive trlfectas by
Stout and Lloyd tied the game at
32, but Tackett broke away and
scored on a layup wltb six
seconds left, but not before
Wildcat center Crall Rankin 10t
a piece of him. Tackett Ank the
bonus foul shot, which was what
North needed to avoid a halftime
tte, as Black hit a ·Jon1 jumper
from the right wlnl at the buzzer
to cut North's lead to 35-34..
The lead changed hands four
tim• early In the 'llllrd quarter
and was tied twice later ·In' the
period. But even thOugh the
· Pirates were starting to get their .
hands o.n the ball more on
defense,· especially l~te In act
three, Hannan Trace started to
put the Pirates on the run when
Boothe connected on a layup In
the first minute ofprlme,tlme. As
Hammel fouled Bc;>othe on tlte
Inside play, Boothe sank the
hopus basket, and Trace led
49-48.
Cornell's deep strike from the

'

rllht corner boosted the Wild•
cats' lead tO 52-411. Hammel
followed that with a jumpel' from
the left side of the lane to cut the
lead to 52-00 wltb il: 51 11!(1. the
· closest the Bucs would ever xet.
Whlle North... clcsed the lead to
three with 1: 26~ left, tenacious
defense alq the three-point arc
and 10-for-14 foul shOottq In
prime time by Hannan Trace
spelled· tbe end of the Pirates',
season.
The Wildcats (12·10), having
advanced to the' district touma. men! at Ohio University's Qlnvocatlon Center, await the winner
of toni1M's Mowrystown
Whiteoak-Beaver Eastern 1aine,
sclteduled to belln at 7: 30 at
Unloto High School In
ChUllcothe.
The Pirates, who ended their
hardwood voya1e at 13-8, bid
farewell to Hammel, the team's
only senior.
