GOD’S KIDS KORNER

OBITUARIES

On the subject of
God’s creation…
The first book of the Bible is Genesis. It starts
out by saying, “In the beginning, God created the
heavens and the earth.” So who made everything
on the earth and everything in the sky? God! Our
God is very creative. From the smallest ant to the
largest whale, He made them all - every plant,
every star, every mountain, the sun, the moon, the
oceans, you, me - EVERYTHING!
God had a beautiful and systematic plan for the
universe. (He still has a wonderful plan for His
universe.) On the first day, He made light and
darkness – day and night. On the
second day, God made the sky and
seas. The third day, He formed the
land, deserts, mountains, and hills.
Next, He put the sun, moon, stars,
and planets in the sky on the fourth
day. He thought there needed to be
living things, so God made fish to
Ann
live in the waters and birds to fly in
Moody
the sky on day five. Day six was a
Contributing big day because God made all the
columnist
land animals from tigers to polar
bears to rabbits, horses, to dogs and
cats. Then on that same day, God decided to make
His ultimate creation. Genesis 1: 27 says, “So God
created man in His own image. He created him
in the image of God. He created them male and
female.” God made us! Finally, on the seventh day
the Bible simply states, God rested. He probably
needed a break after all that! Do you know what
God said about everything that He made during
that time? “And God saw it was good!”
What is so wonderful about creation is that
the Bible tells us we were made in God’s own
image! We bear His image but in a smaller frame
of course, and we resemble Him because we have
His spirit inside us. God is spirit. He wants a relationship with us, so He gave us His own spirit to
be able to need and enjoy Him, our family, and our
friends.
God created us out of love; He cares about us
and what concerns us. He shared the best part
of Himself with you and me by forming us to be
like Him. Nothing else in creation can make that
claim! We were not an accident; we were made
by God’s own design to live on the earth and be a
helper to Him with all that He had made.
So whenever you feel sad or depressed, remember how God made you to be like Him – full of His
spirit and love. He loves and cares about you and
wants to help you whatever may happen to you or
around you. (Yes, even now in the middle of a pandemic and social unrest!) He wants you to be loving and caring and help others in return. You are
special; I am special, all creation is special because
God planned it all to be that way! We are certainly
God’s children!
Let’s pray. Thank You God for making the earth,
the heavens, the animals, and us. You gave us all
the best things to enjoy and even put Your own
spirit inside us. Help us to always remember we
are special to You and made by You. In Your name
we pray, Amen.

When you are
slowly going blind
Terry and I recently discussed our eye conditions. Concerning her, she had a cataract to develop in one eye over time that came to seriously
distort her vision. For a long time, the growth of
that cataract was so slow that it was not apparent to her. Recently, however, an eye examination
identified it, and surgery corrected the problem.
The cataract was removed, and it
has made a big difference for her
concerning her vision (thank God!).
For all of my life, I was able to
read up close without glasses, which
was an advantage when it came to
all the studying I do. But, in recent
days, I had to resort to using the

When the cataract was removed in
my one eye recently, it made a significant difference. Now I do not need glasses to
read. My other eye is scheduled for surgery soon.
Nonetheless, Terry gave this all perspective
recently when she observed, “We were slowly
going blind, and did not realize it.“

Lady Eagles fall to Waterford, 53-36
By Alex Hawley
ahawley@aimmediamidwest.com

TUPPERS PLAINS,
Ohio — They hung in
there for a half.
The Eastern girls
basketball team trailed
Waterford by just four
points midway through
Wednesday’s Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking
Division bout in Meigs
County, where the Lady
Wildcats left with a 53-36
victory.
Waterford (8-3, 6-1
TVC Hocking) led by as
many as five points, at
7-2, in the opening period, but Eastern (3-8, 2-5)

second half of the Lady Wildcats’ 53-36 victory on Wednesday in Tuppers Plains, Ohio.

AP source: Meyer
nearing deal to
coach Jaguars
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A person familiar with the search says Urban Meyer and the
Jacksonville Jaguars are “working toward finalizing” a deal to make him the team’s coach.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on
the condition of anonymity Thursday because an
agreement was not yet in place. The person said it
could be done soon.
Meyer would be leaving the broadcast booth and
returning to the sidelines after a two-year absence
that followed another health scare.
The 56-year-old Meyer was team owner Shad
Khan’s top target, and Khan waited nearly a week
to get to this point. They met last Friday on
Khan’s yacht in Miami and again Wednesday. Hiring the longtime college coach with three national
championships would signify a new direction for
a franchise that has lost 105 of 144 games since
Khan took over in 2012.
Meyer went 187-32 — a staggering winning
percentage of 85.3 — in stops at Bowling Green
(2001-02), Utah (2003-04), Florida (2005-10) and
Ohio State (2012-18). He ranks seventh all time in
collegiate winning percentage, trailing only Notre
Dame legends Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy
among coaches at major programs.
But doubts remain about Meyer’s ability to
make a smooth transition to the NFL, where motivational tactics tend to be moot and losing multiple games every year is a given. Meyer never lost
more than five times in any season as a college
head coach; he went 83-9 at Ohio State.
Still, Meyer has been eyeing an NFL move for
months. He researched the league with help from
former players and friends, started assembling a
potential staff and learned how the front office
works. Meyer and Khan have been friends for
years, building a relationship while both were living in Big Ten country.
Jacksonville was the most attractive opening.
The Jaguars have 11 picks in the 2021 draft,
including five in the top 65, and are nearly $100
million under the projected salary cap. Adding to
the appeal: Khan, a billionaire businessman, has
shown a penchant for patience and a willingness
to spend big.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is a lock
to land in Jacksonville with the top pick and will
be the centerpiece of the team’s latest rebuild.
Meyer would replace Doug Marrone, who was
fired after losing the final 15 games in 2020. Marrone went 25-44 in four-plus seasons with the

The Lady Eagles took
their first and only lead

Jennifer Parker hit a twopoint 36 seconds into
the second quarter. WHS
was back up after a threepointer by Mackenzie

Waterford was ahead

to play.
The guests were ahead

the contest, and cruised
to the 53-36 victory.

WHS won the rebounding battle by a 33-to-24
count, including 16-to-8

Rebels roll past Eastern, 55-31
By Bryan Walters

MERCERVILLE, Ohio
— Finally getting back to
normal.
The South Gallia boys
basketball team shot
61 percent in the first
half and built a 24-point
halftime lead before ultimately cruising to a 55-31
victory over visiting
Eastern on Wednesday
night during a Tri-Valley
Conference Hocking Division matchup in Gallia
County.
The Rebels (7-4, 2-2
TVC Hocking) had their
full roster available for
the first time all season,
and the hosts channeled
that energy into an 18-2
first quarter lead that was
capped by a successful
Jaxxin Mabe three-quarters court heave at the
end of the canto.
The Eagles (0-7, 0-3)
were ultimately never
closer the rest of the
way as SGHS received
another 12 points from
Mabe during a 19-11
second quarter push that
gave the Red and Gold a
sizable 37-13 cushion at
the break.
EHS forced South Gallia into misses on their
first nine shot attempts
of the third stanza and
eventually won the 8-minute session by a 6-5 count
for a 42-19 deficit headed
into the finale. The hosts
closed regulation with a
13-12 spurt to wrap up
the 24-point outcome.
The Rebels made 21
total field goals — including five trifectas — and
also went 8-of-19 at the
free throw line for 42
percent.
Mabe led the victors
with a game-high 23
points, which included
four 3-pointers in a
20-point first half performance. Brayden Ham-

MLB suspends political donations after DC riot

From page 7

NEW YORK (AP) —
Major League Baseball is
suspending all political
contributions in the wake of
last week’s invasion of the
U.S. Capitol by a mob loyal
to President Donald Trump,
joining a wave of major
corporations rethinking their
efforts to lobby Washington.
“In light of the
unprecedented events last
week at the U.S. Capitol,
MLB is suspending
contributions from its
Political Action Committee
pending a review of our
political contribution
policy going forward,” the
league said in a statement
to The Associated Press on

Jaguars, including 2-1 in the 2017
postseason. Marrone failed repeatedly to fill the team’s long-standing
hole at quarterback, and Khan kept
him and general manager Dave
Caldwell around a year longer than
many expected to make them clean
up a fractured locker room and a
stressed salary cap.
Khan also interviewed Kansas
City offensive coordinator Eric
Bieniemy, Atlanta defensive
coordinator Raheem Morris, San
Francisco defensive coordinator
Robert Saleh and Tennessee offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. But
Meyer was his No. 1 choice.
Meyer’s health remains a concern. He stepped down at Ohio
State in 2018 mostly because of
a congenital arachnoid cyst in his
brain, which required surgery in
2014 and bothered him throughout
his final season with the Buckeyes.
He also resigned at Florida for
health reasons in December 2009
only to change his mind the following day and instead take a leave of
absence.
He returned to coach in 2010
and then walked away again at
the end of the season, a move that
eventually angered many Florida
faithful because he took the job at
Ohio State less than a year later.
Meyer spent the last two years
in an analyst role for Fox Sports,
appearing weekly on the station’s
college football pregame show.

TODAY IN HISTORY

Phase

By The Associated Press

From page 1

Today is Friday, Jan. 15, the
15th day of 2021. There are
350 days left in the year.

In addition, a statewide vaccine provider search is available
beginning Jan. 14 at coronavirus.ohio.gov/vaccine, and www.
meigs-health.com. We ask that
you contact the vaccine providers listed to learn how they
plan to administer the vaccine
from their facility, and do not
show up without consulting
them.
Dr. Douglas Hunter, Meigs
County Health Department
Medical Director, states “People need to get the COVID-19
vaccine to protect yourself and
others from the virus, if we ever
want to get back to a state of
normalcy, this vaccine is how
it will be accomplished.” Dr.
Hunter also said “fear shouldn’t
be a factor in getting the vaccine, I am taking it as a medical
provider and so should you.”
If you have any further questions on the COVID-19 vaccination, you can visit https://
coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/
portal/gov/covid-19/covid19-vaccination-program.
For Meigs County vaccination information, visit
the Meigs County Health
Department website at www.
meigs-health.com/covid-19-vaccination-information/, or call
the health department at 740992-6626.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On Jan. 15, 2020, Chinese
officials said they couldn’t rule
out the possibility that a new
coronavirus in central China
could spread between humans,
though they said the risk of
transmission appeared to be
low.
On this date:
In 1862, the U.S. Senate
confirmed President
Abraham Lincoln’s choice
of Edwin M. Stanton to be
the new Secretary of War,
replacing Simon Cameron.
In 1865, as the Civil War
neared its end, Union forces
captured Fort Fisher near
Wilmington, North Carolina,
depriving the Confederates
of their last major seaport.
In 1892, the original
rules of basketball, devised
by James Naismith, were
published for the first time in
Springfield, Massachusetts,
where the game originated.
In 1929, civil rights leader
Martin Luther King, Jr. was
born in Atlanta.
In 1942, Jawaharlal Nehru
was named to succeed
Mohandas K. Gandhi as head
of India’s Congress Party.
In 1943, work was
