Saberhagen said. the downfall
after his 1985 Cy Young Award
came about because he "didn't

season, arm problems which
could be traced to his busy

off-season. Saberhaaen re·
bounded with an 18-10 record In
1987 and was named the Amerlcan League Comeback Player of
the Year.

an Illness In his famUy that led to
a poor finish In 1988 and then In ·
the odd-number years he came
back again.

The surge couldn t come at a
better time for Saberhagen. Hels

which called for a $100,000 bonus
