The Meigs Local School District has seriou s financia l
problems.
ThIs was disclosed Tuesday
night when the distrlcr 's board of
education met in regular session
and learned that $130,000 has
been cut from stat e funds expeeled by the dis!rlcl for the
1986-87 fiscal year . . July 1986
through JunE> 1987.
Shortly after the opening of the
regular meeting, the board
moved Into a45- mlnutE>ex~utivE>
.sesslo~ and apparently was advised at that lime of the.$130,000
reduction In state funds.
In the open session of the
board, following lhE> executive
session. District Superintendent
Dan E. Morris pointed oul that
lhE' current appropriations will
have to bE' revised in some way lo
make adjustmE>nts lor thE> loss of
the $130,000.
He did sta te, however, that
there Is $43,000 In uncommitted
lottery fund money and $51,000
remaining In the district's reserve borrowing fund , bu 1 even
these two amounts will nol make
·up the total cutback.
Student loss cited
Assistant SuperlntendE>nt
James CarpentE>r reported tha t
the cutback was basically due lo
a loss of 56 students from thE' total
enrollment figure. The loss of
each of those students to the
dlslrlcl was $2,300.
With this explanation of thE>
loss of $130,000, the board turned
down a rE>quest from lhe Meigs
Local Band Boosters for funds to
be used In the purchase of new
band uniforms and thl' board
turned down two requ es ts !or
professional leave from sta ff
membE'rs.

The Victory Circle

It's tournament time
By Scolt Wolle
Having been absent from the "circle" lor a time, I'd like to
take this time to congratulate both the Meigs Marauders and
Meigs Marauderetles basketball teams for their super seaso ns
and respective TVC league cha mpionships. Good Luck In the
upcoming tournaments!
·

Tuesday, February 24 at Southern High School, the districts'
four sixth grade basketball teams will each play one half.
consisting of two, six minute periods as a fund raiser for
Southern senior Mall Harris, who is part of a senior all-star
learn chosen to participate In Holland and Belgium, Aprlll0-18.
Each player must raise $1595.00~ g~ on the trip and as I
understand booster clubs and privaTe Individuals usually
sponsor the partic ipants.
Also on the Feb. 24 agenda Is a Southern Alumni basketball
game In which the odd numbered graduating teams will play the
evens. Game lime Is 6; 30.
Admission will be S2.00 adult and $1.00 student.
Also, Southern Coach Howie Caldwell and area boosters will
be selling an updated version of "The History of Southern
Basketball "; 1918-1986 at a cost of $5.00. Interested persons
should contact Caldwell for a copy or buy one at Tuesday's
game.
Other area players scheduled to go on the European tour are
Ed Collins, Eastern; J.R. Kitchen, Meigs; Jay Martin and Joe
McLain, Alexander; Todd Miller, Gallipolis; Denton Guthrie,
Alexander; and Eric Householder, Federal Hocking. Members
of others schools In the region are also on the team, which is
coached by Alexander mentor Mike Meeks.
Coach Howle Caldwell reflected these thoughts about
Tuesday night's unbelievable 113-103 loss to state ranked
Ravenswood .; " This game was hard to believe. Who would ever
think of scoring 103 points and still get beat? We've proven we
can run the offense, but we're going to have to start over on the
defense."
Southern has scored over 90 points In Its last live games after
scrapping Its more conventional pattern game and sticking
mostly to a torrid run-and-gun offense. Southern has three times
passed the century mark with scores of 104, 125, and 103 points.)
Caldwell co ntinued, "In the third and fourth periods we cut
the lead to 11 or 12 points. We'd make our run, then fall back to
19. You can only make so many runs at a team when you're
coming from behind."
"You can't take anything away from Ravenswood. They're
tough ... at every position. They are th e best team we've faced . I
think this game will be a good game to gel us ready lor the

tournament ."
"Our kids have adjusted well to the running style. Defensively
we had some trouble at the post except for Todd Kimes. He
played well."
In closing Caldwell slated, "I've learned a lot this year,
especially about winning and losing. One night I heard Coach
Osborne (Jim Osborne of Galli a Academy) say 'to try to keep an
even keel.' Before we would be sky high when we won and down
In the grave when we lost. 11 was an emotional roller coaster for
us. Now we try to keep that even keel. We lthe team) don't get
too high (on winning) and we llon't gel too low. We just hang
tough and it's made us a better team .'"

tered the Southern Tornadoes,
113-103 In a scorching hot, offensive oriented boys' high school
basketball contest.
It wasn't what the Tornadoes
had hoped for, but the· "game
proved to be the second record
·breaker within a week, this time
going Into the books as the most
points scored by two teams on the
SHS hardwood (216 points) and
possibly the most points scored
by a Southern opponent. It was no
consolation, but also the most
points scored by a Southern tea m
that was defeated.
While Southern maintained its
solid learn effort and newly
unveiled run and gun game,
Ravenswood depended on upbeat
game that centered solely on Its
five starters. Point guard David
Jones lamed the Tornadoes with
32 points, while guard Bernie
Rees and 6-7 exchange student
Enrico Rau tallied 27 markers
each.
Rees was deadly at the line,
where he sank 17-21 to allow
Ravenswood to remain in the
driver's seat. Meanwhile, Travis
Thompson also hit double figures
with 15.

First, it shows you me. Your btin& there is
appreciated by the members of the family. You
can help just by ollerina to help and mean in& it.
By attendin& the funeral, you help shirt the

Of course. if you were out o town or incapacitated durinc the funttal period, your not at·

.derstand your pllcltt.
Visitina the bereaved to offer your assistance
and condolences is proper conduct. In fact,
many mourners may fHI it your obliption to
