CINCINNATI (UP I ) - Nick
Esasky ·literally beat the Montreal Expos s!ngle-handedly
Thur§day night .
. · With only his lett hand on -the
bat, ··the C!nC!nriatt strongman
' blasted a three-run homer to give
the Reds all the runs they -needed In a 7-2 win ·over·the Exp<is.
"I hit that home run with one
hand, " said Esasky. "My right
hand had· slipped off the bat as 1
started to swing and by the time I
made contact, I only Had m y left
hand ,on the bat."
Montreal' s Nl'al H.eaton, who
served up the pitch, said Esas. ky's footwork on the swing also
·
was bad.
"He hit it off his front root and
with one hand," said an astonished Heaton. "I thought I. had
him on a pop-up. But the ball just
kept going, going, going." ·
Reds' hitting coach Billy DeMars was~t't surprised, however.
"Nick is one of the .strongest
guys I've ever been around, and
that includes Mike Schmidt and
Tim Wallach, " said DeMars,
who has been·workingextra with
Esasky this week. "He can hit It
500 feet ."
The Reds have been trying to
trade Esasky all season, but may
not try so hard now. Two regulars
were lost last Sunday with
injuries - Ron Oester for the
season and Kal Daniels for
several weeks- and Esasky has
been playing regulariy all thi s
·week.
· ·
"This could be my chance; "
said Esasky. •: until those inju~
.fes, I was looking to go elsewhere. Now we'll see what
happens here."

ol us, tt s ume 10 venture forth along
1 the open road, the open sky or the open sea,
dependmg on what our vacatJon plans have
mapped out for us. Of course, whemer we go
we will be able to appreaate the beauty of God's
creatJon, even'from the aerial vantage pomt of a
Jetliner However, that JS only one of the reasons
for thinking about God at this tlllle While fun
and adventure are undoubtedly uppti most on
our mmds, we also want 10 recetve the divme
protection that we need to follow us wherevet
we go and to see us safely home agam U your
travels should take you near a House of \\brship,
stop m and thank God for this beautiful \'\Qrld
and for watching over you while you are seemg
tt Remember that God never takes a holiday
from being on band to help you, so be sure that
your faith mdudes Him m your vacatiOn plans,

Sermonette

What we speak aloud with our tongue Is like a parade before
the eyes People hear and judge just as they see whal we do and
Judge One thing to remember Is WI' can display thl' ughllness of
our Inner self much easter and In greater demenrlons by word s
than by our outward appearance Li stening to radio a nd T V
the lyrics of the music and our so called stand up comics of
today can be very wretched The crudeness and vu lgarit y
certainly stands out in the words we hear Th1s displa ys I hP
shoddy workmanship of their mind It also shows the lype of
parents they had They certainly mus t be uneducat ed a s their
offspring are so uneducated The very sma ll VOC1! bulary Is
always displayed by {he vulgar and crude words used and
repeated so often The shallow mind and the vulgar mouth also
let us know what they think of us They coJtStder us unworlhy to
be a friend They consider us lowly,.peopll~ who are fit only to be
Insulted degraded and sneared at by their use of filthy and
vulgar language When you respect someone you give them
honor You say to them' I wanl you as a friend When they use
filthy and vile language to you and In your presence, they ar e
merely telling you, you are not high In their eyes Stay In the
gutter as my gutter language tells you to do
God gave us the commandments We know we are not be bea r
false witness or take the Lords name In vain Luther said ~ e
should fear and love God so we do not curse swear conjure lie
nor deceive When we honor someone for what Ihey have been or
have stood for we use words of honor and praise We do not use
cruel and harsh words We do not get vulgar We use the best
words we know to show honor and respect.
One can be shoddy In appearance and be clean This Is no sin
When we use vulgar language we are showing our shoddy
sinful, ugly stde that Is covered wtthdlrt, dirty dirt God does not
like this and neither do we people having ears to hear Don t be a
sewer mouth full of sttnk When you open your mouth let the
words come out that are like lhe sweet gentle falling pure rain
from heaven Let our mouths be filled with praise all the day
long Keep yourself from a shoddy attitude and your mouth
from crude vulgar words Praise the Lord praise our
fellowman and so honor yourself

COLUMBUS, Ohio (UP!) -The director of the

Shkurti predicts the state will have even a
smaller surplus at the end of the current
biennium, which began July 1.
He said the budget calls for spending · more
money than the state will take In both 1988 and
1989. He figures the general fund will di-op to $126
million by June 30, 1988, and to $63 million by June
30, 1989.
ShkUrll said the budget office will keep a close
watch on the economy, which Is projected to have
slow but steady growth until a downturn In early
1989. Other areas of concern wlll be the effects of

federal tax reform, Increased tal!' enforcement
and colleclioris and refinancing of the unemploy·
men! compensation fund debt.
On the spending sld,e, budget officials will watch
changes In hlgh·cost areas such as welfare
caseloads, Medicaid and general relief, and In
. new child- support regulations.
The schoot-loan fund Is permitted to borrow $40
million from the rainy-day fund to help schools
with money problems, he said. Educators have
projected heavy borrowing because the budget
does not provide as much additional money as

The state wlll spe!ld about $6.3 billion for
primary and secondary education In the
biennium.
For the fiscal year ending June 30, 1989, the end
of the budget periOd, the general fund and
rainy-day fund will total about 3 percent of the
sum spent In the preceding 12 months, Shkurtl
said. A task force .appointed by Gov. Richard
Celeste has recommended· the two accounts

Aien~y and there fore dumping
at the landfill may continue, at
lea.st temporarlly, according to
Jon Jacobs. Meigs County Dep·
uty Health Commissioner.
As ttrantee of the landflll
license, EPA fell last year the
Meigs site was full and should

dump area• should be covered
and reseeded.
Under EPA regulations, the
local public health board has
authority to extend a temporary
dump!J!g ·permit under ceria In
condl(lons. So when Jacobs de·
termined that part olthe landfill
was stlll usable, the Meigs
Count y Board of Public Health.
as EPA 's managing agent,
Issued a temporary six-month
permit from January 1 through
June 30 this year.
At a meeting tn mid -June, the
Board of Public Hea lih decided
to take no action on ·the expiring

temporary permit. Taking the
stand that to close the landfill
would not l)e in the best Interests
of the citizens of Meigs County.
the board decided not to Issue
another temporary permit, but
not to deny the permit either.
This was done to buy lime for
the county commissioners to
st4dy alternative solutions to the
landfill problems Jacobs said.
ln explaining the health
board's actions at a recent
meeting with EPA officials In
Logan, Jacobs was asked that the
Board or Public .He alth submit a
letter to EPA addresslna' the
current circumstances at the
tandflli.
The letter requested by EPA
was sent Monday, Jaci>bs said,
and talks with EPA will continue.
"We 'know something must be
done quickly" and health depart·
ment officials and the county
commissioners are considering
alternatives he added.
But although the board of
health Is attempting to "buy as
much time as possible," said
Jacobs, " time Is not on our side"
a nd dumping at the present
landfill for another year " Is
totally out of the question ."
