Partial solution found
for area ferry senrice

• I

By Ni\l>ICY YOACHAM
Sentinel Staff Writer
Public ·otflclals, merchants,
businessmen and other concerned Individuals meeting Wed·
nesday at the Meigs County
Courthouse. have arrived at
what they term a "OO· percent
solution" In establishing a ferry
service between ,the PomeroyMiddleport area anp Mason
County, W.Va. •
The service will be needed by
February of next year ~hen the
Ohio Department of Transporta·
lion closes the Pomeroy-Mason
bridge for extensive repairs.
AbOut 40 attended yesterday's
meeting, Including U.S. Rep.
Clarence Miller, of Ohio's lOth
District, U.S. Rep. Bob Wise. of
West Virginia's Third District:
and Col. Robert Brown III of the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers .
After lengthy discussion, the
group threw out the Idea of
establishing a ferry between
Middleport and Clifton. W.Va.
Consideration was ,being given
that location because the eorps of
. engineers had earlier refused
permission to allow the use of an
existing landing at Mason.
The expense of developing the
. Clifton site, and the fact that cold
weather condltiohs are not favor·
able to the type construction
which would be needed at Clifton,
were clinchers ,in scrapping the
Middleport-Ciifton route.
According to Brown, the Ma·
son landing was .damaged 10
years ago when It was used for
ferry service and the corps was
left with the bill for repairs. This
Is the reason the corps, which
owns the landing, refused per·
mission to use the site.
However. under certain condl·
tlons, the corps would allow use
of the Mason site, Brown explained. Those conditions include
construction of a temporary
addition to the landing, to proteCt
the existing concrete structure
and make it more accessible to a
ferry, and purchase of a $100,000
performance bond to insure that
any damages could be repaired.

landing, she is concerned that
streets In Mason may be damaged by increased traffic coming
acroos the f~rry to get to U.S. 33.
As she explained, It Is the
citizens of Mason who pay for
street maintainance and repair
through a special tax assessment, based on the value of their
properties . She said she contacted the West Virginia Department of Highways about the
problem, andwastoldtheywould
not acceptresponstbllityofmain·
talning the str.eet from · the
landing to U.S. 33 during the time
a ferry would be In operation.
It was suggested that a limit on
the size vehicles using the ferry,
could·help alleviate this problem.
It was brought out that the Ohio
Department of Transportation
has also said they eould not be
responsible for eosts related to
establishment of a ·ferry either,
because they, by Jaw, can only
deal with state-owned highways.
A ferry operation would be
Inter-state.
Both congressmen agreed that
money. in the form of federal
grants, would not be available for
the project. Thry suggested that
local money be raised to purchase the performance bOnd,
which would cost less than $5,000,
according to figures mentioned
at the meeting.
The congressmen further suggested that labor to construct the
temporary structure over the
existing recreational landing at
Mason could be donated . Matertals for the project might also be
pllrchased with local money,
they said.
The ccrps of enginee·rs couldprovide guidance In development
of the plans, and periodically

porary facility, Brown said.

the matter.
May<r Roush also suggested

contacting the West Virginia
Department of Highways again
to see if they will take a different
position on maintaining the Ma·
son street from the landing to"the
main road.
The decision to use the
Pomeroy-Mason route is being
called the "sixty percent soiu·
tion '' because ferry service in
that location will likely be

An appeal for equal coverage

As a res ident of beth Mason
County and Meigs Cou nty almost
all rhy life. I was always led to
believe that the line folks of
Mason, New Ha ven. Clifton and
West Columbia areas wereco nsi-·
dered as much a part of this
entire local com mun ity as
anyone else. You know, kinda
li ke family. Both sides of the
river in this local commu nity
area have always been supporti ve of on.e ano ther as Well as
dependent upon one another. I'm
sure a very la rge percentage of
your Mason Cou nty neighbors
co ntin ue to read I purchase) this
newspaper as in years pas t.
· When t hese kind folks pick up a
copy of your Sunday edit io n to
read about the accomplishments
oft heir high school young people
I'm sure they wou ld like to find
an artic le at 'teas t equal to tho se
written abOut other local high
schools in the area.
Ask any of your Mason OJunty
neighbors wh at they think of the
fine record of tbe Meigs Marauders football tea m thi s year.

You 'll find they are quite proud of
them. That's because we are all
so close. After ail aren' t we all
kinda like family? The Meigs
foot ball team has gone 9-0 this
season and I say print it! They're
a super group of young people
and.so are the fine yoong people
a t Wah am a High School. SO
PRINT IT! In years past the
Sentinel would have published
articl es about their neighbOrs
acros s the river with like
enthu sias m.
Espec ially cons ide rin g tbat
Wahama is a small Single A high ·
sc hool whose football team has
defeated at least thr ee Double
AA (larger! teams this year and
fo r the first tim e in the history of
Wahama it has captured its very
first play-off in the sta te final s.
We're talking his tory here!
Yet the ru·tirles I've noticed
about the Wah ama football record thu s far this year have left a
whol e lot to be desired, to say I hi'
leas t.
Mr. Editor, l don' t know
wherein the pro blem lies.

Whether it's entirely the school 's
res ]:X)nsibility to get the articles
to the newspaper or it 's the
newspaper 's res ponsibility to
gather the information jor print.
What I do know is this ·- all the
fine folks on bc ths ides oft he Ohio
River in Middleport. Pomeroy
and Mason areas want to read
about. the great stuff our young
people are doing. We'd like to see
an action photo of a Wallama
game once in a while. You know,
the klnda stuff ail our small
communities across this marvelous country are made of.
I'd just like to see a retur n to
the good ole' days wh en We all
matt ered enough to be equally
news wee thy.
Mr. Edit or, would you be kind
enough to addr ess this situation
and re;pond to tlils appeal?
·
Thank you.· Hoping to hear
from you .
I remain ..
Respectfully you rs,
