The second debate has caused,

one contention between the candi, dates; and tn mid-week, former
President Gerald Ford added to the
contusion by apparently siding with
Walter Mondale on the question of
"giVing our technology to the Soviet

Here are the landmarks:
1) The tnteiTOgator, during the

Now, how can we belteveyou would

Supports upcominq fire leVyFor ma ny years and at the

currently up for renewal at this
time. Since the Sutton township fire

an additional mill was assessed to

In all fairness tothecitizensof the

agreed to reduce the current 1. 7

A few crumbs
Less than a month bef'Jre elec·
tlon, Rep. Boster, suddenly remembered Meigs County was in her
district. She shOwed up bringing a
few crumbs to Meigs County from
the "bountiful harvest" that she and
the rest of the "Celestites" have
reaped with their 90 percent
permanent income tax.
Only a Democrat would be so
bold as to even suggest such a tax as
this. It's an unfair tax because 1t
penalizes the worldng claSs of
people. Why not vote a head-tax,
then everyone wlll have the opportunity to share tn pay1ng the tax, as
wetl as voting for it?
I am one who doesn't forget
things easily. I remember those
promises that were made and
broken. Does anyone remember
when Ohio had NO state Income
tax?
I wonder If the people in Ohio and

the United States as a whole have
considered this? If we vote enough
Republtcans Into the offices of bah
state and government Houses of
Representatives and Senate, the
"IRON THUMB" that is being used
to control both state and government wlll be "LIFTED" right along
with its "POWER."
To Interpret part of my Jetter for
the gentleman from Middleport, "I
said my sympathies lie with the
farmers, miners and construction
workers, etc." The · BUREAUCRATS are the ones who are
wasting our money, and putting
half thetr.ttme on on the golf course.
I also wonder what type of
"sorcery or witchcraft" the RepubJtcans use to keep Reagan on Jils
feet, when Nancy IS NOT
AROUND? - Maxine Diddle
Sellers, 30480 Valley Bell Rd.,
Racine, ohio 45771.

Boster has help make it possible
I am a home economics teacher
at Meigs High School. In the past we
have not had textbooks for the
students, otber than a few to use tn
class. (Our latest clothing book was
printed In I966.) We have had
almost no new equipment since the
scbool was built 14 years ago.
Students have suffered In ~lr
learning experiences because of the
antiquated and unusable equipment. It is hard for a class of 18
students to sew on only nine
workable machines. Our school
simply did not have the money to
replace these badly needed Items.

But last year things llegan to
change! We were finally able to
order new textbooks lor the home
economics classes. This year we
have received ntne new sewing
machines and three kitchen ranges.
Things are finally looldng up for our
school. We owe this progress · to

SVAC championship goes down to ·
the final game of the season Friday
night as the defending champion
North Gallla Pirates visit Kyger
Creek.
It ts a championship game 1n at
least three ways - first, should the
Pirates triumph, North Gauta
would wrap up Its third consecutive
title; second, should Kyger Creek
win ~d Eastern defeat Southern on
Saturday night, the SVAC race
would end in a three-way tie; and
third, 1f Southern should defeat
Eastern, followtngaBobcatvtciDry,
the conference flag would be shared
by North Gallla and Kyger Creek.
The Bobcats are coming off a
heart-breaking 8-7 loss to Eastern
while North Gallla defeated Southwestern, 28-0.
Without a doubt, the Eagles, who
won. the game late In the fourth
quarter then were able to "bite the
bullet" In the final seconds, will be
pulling for the Bobcats and a
three-way tie.
Two weeks ago, Eastern lost a
27-16 affair to the Pirates, who were
rated third in last week's computer
ratings and 11th in this week's AP
high school poll.
Last Friday night, Kyger Creek
won the batlle In statistics, but,
according to Coach Mel Coen. the
13obcats made too many mental
mistakes. Two pass Interceptions, a
motion penalty, a pass interference
penalty and tumble each came
during crucial scoring
opportunities.
The Bobcats' Garry Pennington
enjoyed another good night with his

aerial attack, but two passes were
picked off by • the alert Eagle
defense, one In the end rone. Coach
Coen, known for hts varied offensive
attack, ts expected to continue that
trend Friday night.
According to Pirate boss Dave
Angles, the Eobcats are a pretty
balanced team. "They pass a lot,"
hesatd.
"We will be preparing for their
passing attack butweknowtheycan
run well at times, too," he added.
Angles feels it s)lould be another
great game between the two
schools, even although the Bobcats
lost last weekend.
"It doesn't take any mental edge
agatnst us, but It could become a
positive edge for them," he said.
Regarding North Gal11a, Coen
said the defending champs were an
"awfully good team, well-coached
and well balanced.
"We m\lst contain (Mark) Foreman but we can't affordfortheother
backs to gettoose," Coen noted.
Kyger Creek is expected to go with
the usual lineup of Pennington at
quarterback; Chuck Vogel at taUback; Larry Edge a nd Anthony
Kitchen w111 alternate from the slot
back position. Pennington'sfavortte
targets are senio~ end Barry
Matthews and Vogel .
Rumors that senior Steve Waugh,
who broke his ankle in the season's
first game againSt Ironton St. Joe
will return, have no validity.
Waugh may not return to the
basketball court until after the first
of the year.
Frank Swanson. a senior tackle,

sophomore Tom Waugh and Edge
had good defensive efforts against
E;astern.
North Gallta has been Jed offensively by Foreman, who collected
I39 yards In 11 carries last week
against Southwestern. Foreman's
total yardage in rushtng on the
season is I.I27. Scott WUitamson
came on strong to add Iffi yards to
complement the Pirate running
attack.
Defensively, sophomore Steve
McAvena, NG's defensive end; had
an outstanding
night against
Southwestern with ~7 tackles. Bill
Harden also enjoyed another stellar
performance.

India's Gandhi assassinated v

Business Services

.

NEW DELID, India (AP) -:Indira Gandhi, India's prime inlnlster for 15 of the past 18 years, was
.assassinated outside her home
1oday, reportedly by three Sikhs
who served on Mrs. Gandhi's
security detail.
Sikh extremists tater ctatmed
responslblllly for the attac!< on the
66-year-old leader, who had been
under heavy guard for months
because of assassination threats
from Sikhs.
The prime minister was rushed
from her home to the AIJ.lndla
Institute of Medical Sciences, and
she died less than two hours after the
9:20a.m. (}0:40p.m. EST Tuesday)
attack. Thousands of weeping
Indians surrounded the hospital.
Doctors said she was shot in the
heart, abdomen and thigh. There
were reports she had been shot at
least eight limes and possibly as
many as 16times.
The million-strong armed forces
was placed on alert, and pollee
sealed off New DeUti and surrounded Mrs. Gandhi's residence
and the hospital. three miles away.
Former Foreign Minister A.B.
Vajpayee, who went to the hospital
today, said government officials
had told him that three of Mrs.
Gandhi's security guards fired on
her. He said all three were Sikhs and
that two were shot dead by other
security guards while the third was
wounded and hospitalized.
Several hours after the shooting,
an unidentified caller told The
Associated Press office in New
. Delhi: "We have taken our revenge.
Long live the Sikh religion."
Asked who he was and what
organiza lion he was from, the man
said: "This is the action of the entire
Sikh sect." Then the caller hung up.
The prime minister has been
bitterly condemned - and threatened with assassination - by
leaders of India's Sikh minority for

her goverrunent' s handling of
recenl violence in the northern state
of Punjab. Last June, Indian army
troops besieged and then assaulted
the Golden Temple, the Sikhs'
holiest place of worship, in
Amrttsar,
Mrs. Gandhi 8aid the siege was
necessary·to root oot Sikh terrorists
who waging a campaign for
independence. The Sikhs, a breakaway Hindu sect, are about 13 ml111on
of India's 740millionpeople. Almost
600 Sikhs and army troops were
kjlled by official account, but
military and police sources put the
death toll at more than 1,200 ..

Joint Christmas promotion outlined
The upcoming joint Christmas
promotion between Middleport and
Pomeroy was the main topic of
discussion at Tuesday's Middleport
Chamber of Commerce meeting
held at the LaSalle Restaurant.
Yvonne Scally, chamber· president, reported she has been in
contact with Ron Ash, president of
the Pomeroy chamber in regard to
the joint venture.
It was decided by the Middleport
Chamber to go along with the theme
"An Old-Fashioned Christmas"
with all merchants in chargeoftheir
own promotions.
A parade through both villages is
to be held on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 10
a.m. All parade entries, including
those .from Middleport , should be

sent to the Pomeroy Chamber
office. Both chambers are hoping
for a large number of floats in this
year's parade.
Scally Is planning to work along
with Ash on the promotion and will
ask for volunteers as needed on the
project as the plans proceed . . '
Chamber member Brian Conde
reported he would contact the
Jaycees in an effort to recruit more
help on the parade.
A suggestion was made at the
meeting to set up designated tirries
during the weeks before Christmas
for Santa Claus to be on the street.
A)l those present felt thatthiswouid
be a good idea if the arrangement
with Santa can be made. ltwasatso
suggested that a small building be

provided for Santa.
Thematteroffreeparkingdurtng
the holiday season was atsoa topicof
discussion. Chamber members are
in favor of providing free parking to
Christmas shoppers with the stipulation thai Middleport business
employees do nol use the free
parking themselves. A chamber
representative is to meet with
Middleport Village Council in the
near f1,1ture to discuss the holiday
parking situation.
A reminder also issued for
chamber members topaythelrdues
· and return their questlonalres
which should include a meeting time
preference. The questionaires will
be reviewed to see if a more
convenient meeling time can be
scheduled.

The modern bridge pia yer has to
1fear two hats. When he is competing
at rubber bridge or in a team-of-lour
event, making the contract is the
thing, and overtricks can go you know
where. But if he's playing duplicate
bridge, a careful safety play may get
him a bad score if all the suits and
key cards are behaving nicely .
For today's deal, let's assume rubber bridge. The three no-trump contract needs to be played as safely as
possible if it's going to make. Declarer won the opening lead with the jack
of spades, played a spade to the ace,
and then played the ace and queen of
clubs. Down he went, like the Titanic!
The way to guarantee the contract is

policy against a bad club split.
Declarer should play ace of clubs ,
then a Jow club. Now he bas an entry
to his band so that he can later cash
the king of spades, and he will be able
to take an assured nine tricks.
This line of play works even when
the clubs are 4-l , and it is certainly
the right approach at rubber bridge .

What should you do if you're playing
the hand at tournament bridge? Usually at duplicate you take unusual
safety plays only if you are in a- dou-

bled contract or in a contract that you
think lew other pairs will reach.
