men like Frank Cleland, who
made a drive of people whom he
thought might have the extra
cash to buy bonds to provide cash
to light the field. As the receipts
from the attendance lricreased,
names were drawn that each
might be reimbursed.
This Is not necessary with the

I know.
This Is not only my opinion but I

would demand to know why we

The point here Is. simple.
Should a superpower try to do

The Iran oloy has blown up In

But was it a smart plan? It was

WASHINGTON - The unrelenting criticism of President
Reagan's decision to supply
weapons to Iran has produced at
least one salutary development
- an unprecedented display of
candor from senior administration officials .
We have White House Chief o(
Staff Donald Regan acknowledgIng Ihat he and other presidential
aides spend much of their time
cleaning up various messes
made by Reagan.
At the same time, Secretary of
State George Shultz. supposedly
the president's principal for eign
policy adviser, publicly disputes
Reagan's decision to to ship
armaments to a nation "that
continues to pursue a policy of
terrorism."
What's going on? The president has made a dreadful mistake, he refuses to acknowledge
it and his advisers are sent out for
another rqund of "damage control" - the administration euphemism for spreading shameless propaganda.
"Some of us are like the shovel
brigade that follow a parade
down Main ·Street cleaning up.
We look Reykjavik and turned ·
what was reall?a sour situation
Into something that turned out
· pretty well," explains Regan .
" Who was It that took the
dislnformatlon thing and managed to turn It? Who was It that
look on this loss In the Senate and
pointed out a few facts and
managed to pull that? I don 't say
we'll be able to do It four times In
a row. But here we go again, and
we' re trying," he adds .
Each of those Instances Involve
a presidential mistake, miscalculation or embarrassment that
the administration sought to

paper over by placing a special
"spin" on the version offered lor
public consumption.
That practice routinely Involves misleading, ,deceiving or
withholding Information. Reagan himself embraced such
tactics during the recent address
In which he attempted to deny
that he was trading munitions for
hostagE's with Iran.
For example, he began by
pointedly rejecting reports that
the arms were shipped through
Spain or Italy- then avoided any
reference to more credible accounts that Identify Israel as the
intermediary.
·
Shultz, never blalimt ly dlsloy al

object!'Q to the Iranian initiative
at its outset (as did Defense
Secretary Caspar Weinberger)
and now refuses to peddle devious, duplicitous explanations
to justify It.

"It Isn' t the right thing for
governments to trade arms or'
anylhlng else lor hostages, just
because II encourages taking
more, " he notes.
· Although three U.S. citizens
held cllptlve In the Middle East
have been released - presumably with Iran's assistance three others have ·been taken
prisoner during the same period.
Cynics suggest that they may
have been replacements lor
those freed earlier, to ensure a
continuing now of arms to Iran.
In addition; Reagan has violated , at least three public
pledges he made earlier- never
to negotiate with terrorists, not to
t~ade with governments that
sponsor terrorism and to remain
neutral In the Iran-Iraq war.
At the White House, Shultz's

By BELEN THOMAS
UPI While House Reporter
WASHINGTON CUPII - Ronald Reagan is facing one of the
toughest crises of his presiden cy. The credi bility of his
administration has been called Into question. ·
In many ways, his secret deali ngs with Iran evoke memories of the
classic line by former Attorney General John Mitchell in the
Watergate era: "Watch what we do, not what we sav."
The dimens ions of the problem are not Watergate size. People will
for, give if not forget and the)' could accept the president' sexplanation
that the covert approaches lo Iran to Improve relations and seek the
safe return of thr hos tages werr worthy goals .
After all. prcsidents should constantly probe t hr geopolit ira! scene
to enhance U.S. securit y and interests.
What Is quest ionable is why da y after day, especially on thr
campaign trail, Reagan so loudl y and vocally proclaimed hostilit y to
any form of negot Ia lion with terrorists, Including presumably nations
on his list of those sponsoring terrorism . .
The same goes for Secretary ofSt ateGeorgeShultz who knew about
th£> switch in policy , if not alii he operational drtalls. and kept up a
fa cade of no deals. knowing otherwise. He would bang his fist for
emphasis. Anti-terrorism has become the focal point of his foreign
policy. It was like being against sin, and safe io sell the world.
The point is that when three hostages were releasf'd, one by one, he
certainly was privy to the deals that were made to get them fr eed
from thei r pro-Islamic Jih ad captors In Lebanon. He knew that all of a
sudden there had not been a change of heart wit bout a quid pro quo.
~ven so, he coni inued to pound away, saying one thing while knowing
that the administration was carrying out a secret plan.
Even aft er the story broke of U.S. relations with Iran ·and tho>
linkage to the hostages, he went to Paris to urge French officials not to
dPal with lerrorists.
So he pursued his own agenda and Reagan and some of his national
security advisers pursued another .
When Secretary of State Cyrus Vance thought President Carter's
Ill-fated rescue mission to retrieve o2 American hostages was Ill
advised, even before it was executed, he said so. And afterward he
resigned. havlng been out trumped by then national security affairs
ildvl.,•r Zblgniew Brzezinski whq amazingly enough is ,beratlng the
prl'sent administration ft'lr it s actions.
.
Both Reagan and Carter were In the same' boat - a superp'ower that
cannot act and a people beco ming more rest lve ihat they are not doing
more. Oftentimes they are moved to action, and In such secrecy that
the:Y defeat th£'mselves.
It happened to both presidents who played their cards so close to the
chest that they did not weigh thl' options, the possible results and
world opinion.
The Iranian adventurr had a lot to do with Carter loslng the
presidency . Rragan is secure In his post for another two years, but the
revelations on Iran have hastened the lame duck aspects of his
administration and focusf'd a stronger spotlight on 'hls failures In
foreign policy .
He has no big wins in foreign policy with the exception of the
Invasion of Grenada.
It is only In the last coup le of years that he has begun toconeent rate
on foreign affairs In deadly earnest, hoping to catch up, and leave
some tangible r<•sults for the history liooks.
His dream of a nucl ear-fr('(' world is b<'lng thwartf'd in many
directions. from the Soviets. the allies and military ex perts who fear a
Kremlin advantage in pursuing such negotiations.
, The Impact of fran. and !he loss of the Senate ma jorit y to the
[)(>mocrats. also will be felt on Reagan's Central American policies.
fils drive to overturn th<' Sandinista government in Nicaragua by
arming the rebels, or Contras, will face more scrutiny.
The fact that the CIA will be r unning the insurgency In Nicaragua
and lit erally taking over the Honduran border for CO\'ert operations
will cscalate the U.S. involl·ement, to put it mildly , and those factors
will havr to be weighed morr closely.
So Reagan may not find his last two years the s inecure that
president s before him have discovc:'red with thrlr dwindllng, power.
There will be obstaciC'S to fa ce on the for eign policy front.

By Scott Wolfe
RACINE - In a league that
many believe will hi> very well·
balanced, the defending SVAC
Champion Southern Tornadoes
again hopl' to play an Important
role In determining who the
1986-87 champion will be, and if
tradition prevails the Tornadoes
should again be at the top of the
list . After a ll , home grown
Tornado products have been
nouris hed throughout the years
on successful basketball programs and have a firs t-hand,
eyewitness account of Tornado
teams that have captured ten
consecutive SVAC
championships.
La~ t season Southern pos ted a
21·3 record under firs t year coach
. Howle Caldwell , who led the
Tornadoes to Sectional a nd SVAC
crowns and Di strict runner-up
honors.
Graduating from· last yea r's
squad were six valuable seniors.
inc luding Scott Wickline, Sea n
Grueser, Kelley Grueser. Rl ·
chard Gilbride. J ay Bostic k. and
Todd Adams. Adams and Bostick
each earned all-district honors.
Despite its losses, Southern
:plans to hold its own as It returns
"live let1ermen and moves up six
pl ayer s from las t seaso n's 17·3
reservl' squad .
Coach Howie Caldwt>ll is op·
tim lslic as he looks toward the
upcoming season, but a lso real·
lzes the increasing st rength of
the league and the tough non·
league schedule that Southern
traditionall y fac~s.
Onl' of Southern's strengths is
Its overa ll qu ic kness and olfen·
slve rebounding a bilities .
Caldwell comment l'd. " This is
one of tht' quickest cl ubs th at
we've ever had. The overall
quickness or the cl ub is super."
Despite the toughness of Its
grueling schedul e, Caldwell lists
his tea m's opposition as being a
definite advantage, citing that

the co mpetition will better pre·
' pare his young Tornadoes lor the
end of the season. Southern laces
tough big school power Gallipolis
and seven other Class "AA"
opponents.
Ret urning to the Southern
line-up will be G-3 senior center
Todd Kimes, two-year senior
letterman Matt Harris at 5'10",
5'9" senior guard Eric Milliron,
a nd juniors David Amburgey and
Ken ny Turley.
Turley at 6'2" and Amburgey a
5'11" guard were major offensive
weapons on last season's tea m.
Rounding out the roster are
senior Tim Gilbride, senior Jeff
Holt , juniors Scott McPhail,
Shawn Cunningham. Shannon
Riffle. and sophomorl' David
McMillin .
·
Southern returns a strong
nu cleus, but lacks overall team
experience.
Caldwell refll'Cted, " We have
five seniors on the tea m this
year. but only two have an
a bund a nce of ga me time. This
has to be a definite dra wback."
"Another drawback Is our
defense. !Hs not where It s hould
be for this time of yea r. Our
players have been working hard
to get It to the point where I want
it. so hopefully by later In the
yea r it will get better," said
Caldwe ll .
Southern agai n will stand by its
aggress ive, tantalizing ·man-to·
man deny defense, while also
practicing several variations of a
zone. Southern' s defensive inten·

.

Alt hough the league seems to
be very well-balanced at a
preseason glance, Southern's
tradition carries a lot of weight
as Caldwell suggests, " The tradl·
tlon at Southern is very strong.
Hopefully, the players this year
wUIJive up to that long standing
tradition."
And when the story is told In
February, the combination of
youth, pride, good coaching,
talent, and traditional may just
add another golden feather ,to
Southern's championship crown.

In last year's popular book by Frank
~wart , "A Christmas Stocking," the
chapter "The Man from Out of Town"
involves Sammy, a gentle old man _.
who has none of the bad maMers that
sometimes afflict competitive bridge
players. Why shouldn't he be nice,
siooce it eventually becomes apparent
that he is none other than old St. Nick,
in 'civilian attire.
In today'• hand, Sammy gets to the
grand slam in no-trump. On the open·
ing heart lead, declarer takes East's
with his ace and starts running
I·c11um. East is so excited to be defend·
ioog such an ambitious contract that he
plays the 10 of diamonds as a signal
even before following to tbe first club.
But Sammy does not take advantage
of the revoke by playing the jack of di·
amonds and letting il o;ide. (The Rules
state that the diamo~o. an expooed
card, would have to be played al the
first opportunity.) Instead he just
plays out all his clubs, discarding all
tbe red cards from dummy, even the
diamond ace. East must now reduce to
five car(ls, and since he.cannot throw a
spade, he must let go one of his red
kings. When that happens, Sammy
simply plays the jack of that suit, and
East is now squeezed once again, be-
