Altho\lgh some S&Ls are reopening as they apply or are certilled as

although some energy programs. are assigned to the commission.
·
For Instance, present laws require the public utilities to file long-range

tasks are assigned to the department.
: SecreSt's bill would consolidate both programs within the commission.
lt the same time, the legislation would have the department retain the

· He said his bill would not abolish any of the functions of the energ:,~

· And, Sen, Charles L. Bulls, D-Cleveland, says college students from
middle-class Ohio famUies would be unduly penallzed by President
Reagan's proposal to cut federal aid for higher education.
: He says that compared to the national werage of 30 percent, Ohio
students are required to pay more than 40 percent of undergraduate

Reagan's program would limit federal aid for any student to $4,(00 a

Corporate 'divorces'
now -on the increase
' Mergers are making many of the biggest headlines in business these
(lays, with deals like the planned combination of Capital Cities
.Communications and American Broadcasting.
:- But behind tbe scenes there Is also a significant trend In the opposite
' direction - toward the equivalent of corporate divorces.
: According to calculations by Mergers & Acquisitions magazine, there
were 100 major divestitures of corporate assets In 198), with a total value of
$4.8 button. By 1984, the number had swelled to 758, worth $29.7 billion.
: Companies often make these moves with a great deal of fanfare.
"Presenting Trans World Without Airlines," . declared the diversified
Trans World Corp. after It spun off Its airline subsidiary early last year.
Corp. recently took out large ads In the business press describing
·"Why we sold our Twinkles."
The company said the products of Its divested Continental Baking
subsidiary "no longer fit our Idea of what
should he."
: "In fact , In 1984 alone, we divested $638 million worth of companies that
llldn't fit. And we're divesting another $1.7 biUion," it said.
· What's behind this itch to ditch buslni'SSI'S-that once looked appealing
enough to buy, or to nurture from birth? As Standard & Poor's Corp. notes
in the current Issue of its publication The Outlook, managers are trying to
·!ldjust to a basic shift In business conditions.
· "'Many major companies are on slenderizing diets, shedding
cash-draining operations or selling oa assets that no longer fit into their
strategic plans,'' S&P analysts note..
For one thing, as inflatltm has subsided. bus~ operations that could
thrive with the help of price Increases In the 1970s may have lost the

For another, the oollar's long rise in villue against foreign currencies has

imports.
: Still another motive may he to raise the standing of the parent company
in the stock market, In order to reduce its vulnerabUity to a possible hostile

. The record shows, S&P notes, that divestitures, like merger

·· Company managers normally have a strong rooting lJiterest in what

The crowd hasn't changed that much. Easily excited, for almost
any cause. They rebel to cast down, cast out, put out of sight anyone
who casts a shadow of'Change, or doubt, question or Implication that
what they do may not be righteous or accepted by God . So, the
question Is asked, who really was on trial that day, Pilate, The
Crowd, or Jesus?
We stUI are laced wlth the question. which of the twain shall I
release unto you? The Barabbases, the principles which we know to
be against good righteousness and morality or J esus which Is called
Christ• WUI be cryBarabbas- he doesn't bothermy consctence, my
course of living. He wouldn't reject my associates or challenges In
that direction. I could still rebel, do as I please anyway and It •s
nobody's business what I do. Then what would you do; then wlth
Jesus which Is called Christ?
Would you again cry, "Crucify Him?'' WUI you not stand with
Him? Yes, I wtU keep His commandments. I will accept Him Into my
life. I have allowed things to rule me too long.

It Is lmperatlve, yes, we must make a choice of Jesus , for our

WASHINGTON (AP) - The
steepest foodpricerlseinslxmonths
drove consumer costs up0.3percent
last month, the government said
today. Analysts blamed the devas·
tating Florida freeze as the main
culprit.
Gasoline prices fell 2.5 percent In
February and were 4.7 percent
below the level of a year ago.
Industry watchers say, however.
that the three-month trend has
turned around and prices at the
pump will continue rising in the
coming weeks.
Coupled with the 0.2 percent ,
overall gain in January, the Labor
Department's Consumer PrlcP In·
dex so far thls year has risen at an
annual rate of 3.3 percent.
