James Jacoby

By James Jaeolly

Is it possible..that having tao many
high cards in dummy may have· a
. hypnotic effect? That seemed to be
the case in today 's deal, when declarer inexplicably defeated himself in a
slam conttact that was easy to make.
On Wesl's opening lead of the dia·
mond seven, the I 0 was played from
dummy. East played the queen and
declarer took the ace. The slam could
certainly not be made on a crossruff,
so South naturally pulled trump . He
played a club to dummy. and then
another of dummy's high clubs. Only
then did he stop to wonder how he
was .going to make the hand. Eventu·
ally he cashed the spade ace, came to
his hand with the club ace and took a
spade finesse. He later lost to the king
of hearts .
The right play is really simple. At
trick twa, South should play a hearl to
the queen. If West happens to hold the
heart king, declarer will either win
the trick with the queen , or at least
establish a parking place tor the JaCk
of sjlades.
