BEREA, Ohio (UPI) -Mentioning Carl Hairston to Cleveland
Browns head coach MartySchottenheimer Is like referring to the Hope
Diamond in the presence of a jewel
thief.
"There's no question that we
absolutely stole Carl Hairston from
the Philadelphia Eagles," said
Schottenhelmer. "Wegaveuponlya
ninth-round pick - for him (In
January, 1984). and he's brought
leadership and maturity to our
defense.
"Carl's a gem. He's done very,
very well . He's always the first guy
off on a pass rush because he's so
Instinctive. He knows what has to be
done to win, and he's a father figure
to the rest of the defense."
No wonder they call the 32-yearold, 6-foot-4, 260-pound Hairston
"Big Daddy."
"I was pretty shocked about being
traded by the Eagles." said the
defensive end. "But I took out my
emotions in playing.
" I have a lot ofrespectforMarty,
and it 's not because he has a lot for
me. I just like the way the Cleveland
Browns do things defensively."
Schottenheimer has liked Hairston "for a long, long time."
When the Browns coach was the
New York Giants' linebackers
coach In 1975, he scouted Hairston at
the UnlversityofMaryland-Eastern
Shore.
"I tried to convince (Giants'
coach) BUI Amsparger that we
should draft Carl," said Sc hottenhelmer. "but theEagles tookhimlnthe
seventh round. The Giants felt they
didn't need another linebacker."
The Browns need Hairston,
though. Startingrightdefenslveend
Keith Baldwin's recovery from
knee surgery has been slow, and
Hairston has stepped into a starting
role.
· He also has stepped into several
opposing quarterbacks, totaling
four sacks and 25 tackles lri the
Browns six games to date.
"We definiteIy have the best
overall defense in the NFL," says
Hairston, a 10-year veteran.' 'That's
.because we play hard for fou r
quarters, not for just a ha lf or In bits
and pieces.
"Marty ctoesn't give us little pep
talks. He says we're supposed to .
motivate ourselves, that we know
what our respective jobs are."
Hairston is certain Clevellllfd can ·
win theAFCCentral. ·

"Our company has been in the
heating business lor three generations. Today, we have twenty crews
installing heating systems year
'round. And almost all are gas. People
prefer gas heating because it's clean,
reliable ... and most of all, warm. No
matter how cold it gets outside, the
home stays warm and comfortable.
Gas heat saves money, too. The new
high-efficiency gas furnaces can
lower heating bills by as much as
30%. So when people ask us, we
recommend gas. There's just no
better choice:'
If you're looking for warmth
and savings in a heating system, take
it from someone who knows. Ask a
heating dealer like Mark Swepston
about a new high-efficiency gas
furnace.

Cholesterol levels and its reduction in body

By Edward Schreck, D.O.
Assistant Prolessor
of Family Medicine
Ohio University College
of Osteopathic Medicine
QUESTION: At my last physica l
exam, the doctor said my blood
cholesterol level was a !itt !I; high.
How . dangerous is an eiPv a1ed
cholesterol level•
.·
'·
ANSWER: The
average American consumes ·
about 500 milligrams of cholesterol daily, or
about seven tablespoons of fat. Only :lOO or so
milligrams are necessary to main-

tain good health. If Americans
dropped their cholesterol levels 15
percent, the rate of heart disease
nationwide would drop ll peroent.
Cholesterol is actually essential
to life and. plays a key role In the
production of certain hormones.
However, too much cholesterol in
some parts of the body can be
danget·ous. ·
Cholesterol can build up ln the
bloodstream and accumulate on the
walls of the blood vessels until blood
flow is impaired. This condition, ·
which Is known as atherosclerosis,
can lead to heart attacks or strokes.
QUESTION: How can I lower rnv
cholesterol level?
ANSWER: Reduclng lntake of

saturated fats - from animal
souroes·- and lncreaslng consumption of unsaturated fats - ,from
vegetable sources - helps lower
cholesterol levels. This year, a .
National Institutes of Health panel
recommended a diet which excludes fatty meats such as sausages, paean, liver and kidneys and
restricts beef Intake to two sen~ings
per week. Instead or these meats,
the NIH suggests eating fish,
skinless poultry and veal.
Eat fewer. products 'conta!nlng
egg yolks beCause yolks have a hlgh
cholesterol content. Margarine Ispreferred to butter, and low fat milk
and cheese to whole milk and
"regular"
cheese. Slnce coconut ail
.

.

and palm oil are extremely high in
cholesterol - even more than lard
- eat foods processed with them
sparingly. Other foods to avoid
lnclude shrimp, ice cream, klbster
and milk chocolate.
The diet also urges consumption
of more fresh fruits and Vej!etables
and whole-grain cereals.
There Is evidence that lifestyle
changes can lower cholesterol
levels as well. For Instance,
moderate ~xercise, such as walking
for a couple hours a week , may help
bring down your "cholesterol
count." In fact , the more you
exercise the lower your cholesterol
count wlll be.

WANT ADS
FOR GREAT BUYS

Adults should have their blood
cholesterol levels measured every
few years. If diet modifications
aren't able to bring your cholesterol
· level down to a safe reading, your
doctor may recommend that you
take cholesterol-lowering mediCations. However, because these
medications ' are costly and may
cause side effects, they are usually
used only as a last resort.
