Emotion, imagination
keys to Bengals' rout
CINCINNATI (UP!) -A blend of
emotion and Imagination fueled one
of the Cincinnati Bengals' most
satisfying wins ever - Sunday's
50-24 conquest of the Dallas
Cowboys.
The Bengal players were emotionally high for Dallas' first visit to
Cincinnati. They wanted a chance to
show what they could do against the
!JIOSI publicized team In the NFL.
The Clnclnnatl coaches supplied
the Imagination with their game
plan. They relished the opportunity ·
to out-coach oneofthemastersoflhe

Cowboys' quarterback Danny
White was especially Impressed
with the emotional Intensity of the
Bengals' defense.
"Playing defense Is basically
emotions," he said. "The offense Is
coming at you, so you've got to rely
on emotions to put you Into action.
"And Clnclnnatl's defense was
really fired-up. At their emotional
level, It was going to take more than
great execu tlon for us to beat them.
It was going to take that, plus an
even greater emotional level on oor
part. We couldn't match It."
Probably the most emotional
Cincinnati defensive player was
nose tackle Tim Krumrie.

"I think It was my best game,"
said KrumMe. "I was going to say
something to Rafferty after the
gme, but he went to the locker

room."
What was Krumrle going to say to
Rafferty?
"I was just going to tell him my
name," he said.
Wyche and his staff stuffed their
game plan with plenty of lmaglna·
t!ve plays. One of the testcameona
third and five at the Dallas 27.
Cincinnati put four receivers out
wide - and ran James Brooks
straight up the middle for a
touchdown.
As plotted In the Bengals' play
book, Brooks even pretmded to
assign himself a pass blocking task
just before the ball was snapped by
pointing to a Dallas defender and
yelling, "1 got him."
Throughout the game, Cincinnati
employed formations and plays that
even the Dallas players admitted
CQnfused them.
"It's difficult to prepare for
multiple formations," said Landry.
"We should know how to handle
them because we've been doing It
oorselves since 1900. But we sure
didn't."

Cincinnati's victory Improved Its
chances d. winning the AFC Central
division IItle, but anything can
happen In the final two weeks of the
season. The Bengals and Browns
are tledforthe division lead with 7· 7
records.
Because of the t!e-breaklngprocedure, the Browns can claim the title
by winning their final two games
against Houston and.the New York
Jets, no matter what Cmclnnatl
does. But, should Cleveland lose to
Houston Sunday and the Bengals
beat Washington, Cincinnati wins
. the division.
