:Court expands rights

A divided Supreme Court TUesday expanded the tights of suspeds to

The court, In a~ ruling, held In a case from Malne that once a person
charged with a crime seeks the assistance ci a lawyer, the tx>lice must

The ruling came In case Involving theft charges against Perley Moulton

which Moulton also discussed the theft case.
Those statements were used at his trtal and Moulton, woo oow sells tires
In Bellas!, Maine, was convicted. The conviction was later reversed by

: Agreeing with the state court, Justice William Brennan, writing for the
majority, said It was clear "the state violated Moulton's Sixth Amendment
right (to have an attorney present at questioning) when It arranged to
record conversations between Moulton and Its undercover informant,
Colson."
"By concealing the fact that Colson was an agent cl the state, the poUce
denied Moulton the opportunity to consult with counsel and thus denied him
· the assistance of counsel guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment."
The ruling, joined by Justices Thurgood Marshall, Harry B!ackrnun,
Lewis Powell and John Paul Stevens, drew !Ire from the conservative wing
of the court.
In a dissent joined by Justices William Rehnqulst. Byron White and
Sandra Day O'Connor, Chief Justle Warren Burger wrote that "nothing

result, which creates a new 'right' only for those possibly habitual
offenders who persist in criminal activity even while under Indictment for

WASHINGTON- The full story

Last month, tbeembassy'snatlve
Nicaraguan employees were

Interrogation by the secret pollee.
Women employees were stripped
and asked humiliating questions
about their sex lives; several of the
embassy workers were thrmtened
with death if they contlnued to wock
for the "gringos."
The State Department delivered
a sharp protest to the Nicaraguan
charge d'affaires In Washington,
and the local embassy employees In
Managua have not been similarly
bothered since, sources told our
associate Lucette Lagnado. At least
one of the harassed employees has
resigned.
According to classified cables
from the Managua embassy, 15
Nicaraguan employees were sum·

Brain may be key in AIDS.virUs
BOSTON (UPI) -The discovery
that the AIDS virus may find
sanctuary In the brain has led
researchers to speculate that the
disease may be more difficult to
treat than piWiously thought and
perhaps Impossible to cure.
The AIDS virus, known as
HTLV-3, recently has been found In
the fluids and tissue of the brain and

neurological allments such as
dementia and meningitis.
The central nervous system,
which includes the brain and spinal

the fragile central nervous system

"The brain, therefore, may well
