cause or blindness In American
adults under the age of 65.
Annually, there are approximately
5,tro new cases of blindness due to
· diabetes mellitus.
The disease process In the retina
causes the blood vessels In this part
of the eye to leak Into the suppOrting
fluids of the eyeball. New vessels
frequently form In the retinal layer
to wake up for the leaking vessels
but these often lnterlere with vision.
In addition, the bleeding often
causes scar tissue to form In the
vitreous fluid that helps the eyeball
keep Its shape.
.
All these changes may cause the
retina to detach completely from
the eye. The retina Is Ilk<~ a "radar
ciiSk" that picks up light w~ves and
transmits them to the optic nerve,
the nerve.which leads to the vision
center In the brain. When the retina
Is detached this transmission is
Interrupted, causing blindness.
QUESTION': How are diabetic
changes In the eye detected?
ANSWER: In the-early stages of
retinopathy, vision changes al'!ln't
noted by the patient. Only careful
examination of the Inside of the eye
by a physician reveals the retlno·
pathy. A person who has been
diabetic for only 10 years has a 5().50
chance of having eye changes that
need treatment. That's why periodic eye examlnatlns are espeelally

QUESTION: How are these eye
cbanges treated?
ANSWER: Etrecttve treatment
depends on good CQntrol · or the
diabetes. Itself. This means carefully following the recommended
diet and using Insulin or oral
hypoglycemic medications ,as pres·
crlbed. The better the blood sugar Is
