WASHINGTON - Let me ask
you to look back, 1f you will, to a
period of about eight days In
December 1982, when The Washing·

members of the board of llirectors

The attack had all the trappings of
an artU!ery barrage - smoke and
fire and thunderous noise. Whlle It

This was the substance of the
Post's news stories and editorial
comment - that the 10 board
members appointed by President
Reagan early In 1982 were a bunch
or hlghblnders feeding at tbe public
trough; that the Reagan appointees
had been pulling down "fat lees" for
their services: that these fees were

collected at a rate "at least twice as
large as those paid to any previous
board.''
There were juicy tidbits and
sidebars. The Post centered Its fire
on board chairman WUllam F.

As if we didn't have enough
trouble In American business, Eliza
Collins has just written In the
Harvard Business Review that
more and more love affairs are
taking place In the executive
echelons of our nation's
corporations.
In the past these affairs have
been between the male boss and his
secretary. but as more females
climb up the management ladder,
they are now taking place between
high·level executives of both sexes.
According to· Ms. Collins these
affairs are playing havoc with other
employees, because they don't
know lf a management couple, In
love, Is maldng decisions for ' the
good of the company or for each
other.
The organizational and emotional turmoU pervades everyone
from underlings to superiors, and
the normal double-crossing atmos·
phere In tbe corporation Is replaced
by distrust, jealousy and hack·
biling.
Ms. Coll1ns <ltters a tough solution
to the problem. Companies must
re&ard love affairs between their
executives as conflicts of interest,
and she proposes that the person
who is least essential to the firm be
asked to leave. She writes that In
the male corporate world this Is
Ilkely to be the woman. But, she
adds, lf both parlles are of equal
value, it is the man who should be
canned to avoid a sex dlscrlmlna·
tion suit against the comJliUIY.
Bosses, Ms. CoUins says, must
take a strong stand, because the
comJliUIY always comes flrsl
Yet tbere Is another aoluUon that
Ms. Collins doesn't suaest. wlilch
could save both jobs.
Let me give you a scenario.
The chief executive of Kiss & Tel
calls in two vice presidents.
"Miss Smart. Mr. i>uft, rumor
has it that the two of you are very .
much in love."
"Where did you get that idea, J.
T. ?" Duff asks.

" Well, foronethingMissSmartls
running her hand through your hair
wbUe I'm talking to you."
Miss Smart says, "It's true, J .T.,
Arthur and I are crazy about each
other. But we don't fool around on
company time."
"That's not the point," J. T. says.
"The entire conglomerate knows
about it and It's causing a real
morale problem. Even our Singa·
pore office thinks you two are
plotting againSt them.''
Duff says, "That's rtdiculous.
Our division has never been · In
better shape since we've laDen In
love. We're the only executives in
the company who game plan '
corporate strategy In bed.''
.. Nevertheless, Duff, I must take
a strong stand on thls Issue.
According to management pollcy

the least essential of tbe two of you
must go."
"You can't do that to Arthur,"
Miss Smart yells.
"What do you mean me? " Duff
cries. "I'm more essential than you
are. I was responsible for the
takeover of the Brett Pine Tar
Company.''
"After I showed you how you
could do It, by selling off our MI.
Saint Helen 's Real Estate
subsidiary."
"Are you trying to tell me your
job means more to you than our
love?'' Duff says.
"I can always fall In Jove," Miss
Smarl says. "But I worked too hard
to get where I am In this company to
throw it away now."
"I should have known you were a
ruthless broad when you closed

down Scranton, Pennsylvania. You
can move out of the apartment
tonight."
"It will be my pleasure, and from
now on you can write your own
reports. Let's see how long you last
with the company on your own."
J. T. says, "From this conversa·
tion can I assume tbe love affair
between the two of you Is over, and
you wiD both star! beh3ving like
grown·up dog-eat-dog executives?"
"You bet your sweet llfe, J. T."
Duff says.

In the American League, he's a far cry from the
MUt WUcox who came within one out of a perfect
game back In April, to be sure.
However, the stocky right-hander clearly has
regained some of his old form since coming off the

Detroit's starting rotation down the stretch.
Wilcox, 9-10, allowed nine hits Monday night and
managed to pull out a 5-1 victory over the Cleveland
Indians. It waS the first triumph In three ~tarts since
recovering from a sore shoulder for WUcox, who had
not won since June 12.
The victory was Detroit's fourth in .a row and pulled
the second·place Tigers within five games of the
Baltimore Orioles in the American League East. The

Orioles were rained out In Boston.
New York nipped Mllwaukee 1.0 In the only other

The Tigers were aided by Bert Biyleven 's wUdness.
The Indians rtght·hander hit three batters and threw

the 4 2·3 Innings he worked.

The Tigers spotted the Indians a 1-41 lead In the . .

Detroit rallied for three runs In its half of the fourth.
