Morris noted that Instrumental
music classes are held In the kitchen. In addition the plano Is
moved from classroom to classroom for vocal music classes.
Morris said plans to add portable
class rooms would cost $70,[XX).
"We have financial problem s.
Since 1966-67 we have lost 700 students in the district" Mortis stated.
At the March .school board meetIng Morris said the Sale m Center
Sc hool was overcrowded and
pointed out the problems of con·
ductlng slx grade levels and other
classes In the five classroom buildIng. However, contrary to earlier
suggestions of additional class·
rooms a t Salem Center School, he
proposed that some 56 children of

the fourth, fifth and slxth grades be
transported to the Rutland E lementary School where there Is more
room for them.
RAISE OBJECTIONS

At last night's meeting parents
and teachers In attendance took of·
fense to having their school taken
from the m and leaving only the
first, second and third grades.
One resident asked If eventua lly
the first, second and third grades
would be moved.
Morris acknowledged that was a
possibility and there are other
schools In the district where slmtlar
studies will be made suc h as Harrl·
sonvllle, BradbUiy, Pomeroy and
Middleport .
Morris added there are good

sound reasons to move to Rutland.
Morris a lso pointed out that the
entire district must be considered
a nd the cost Is mlnimual In transporting the students .
Salem Center Is not the only
school in the district where changes
will be proposed.
One parent asked, does your decision stand? Morris a nswered, "!t is
up to the board of education as to
what will be done." Another resident asked, don't we have any
rights?
Another patron said, "We are In·

teresled In the safety of our child·
ren. We have to fight the coal trucks
that trravel the hig hway between
here a nd Rutland. There were
more people killed in auto acci-

dents than in Viet Nam. We are en·
da ngerlng our children. we are
socia l outcasts."
Morris replied, "We are concerned with your child ren, probably more than you are. It Is true

they will be transported a greater
dista nce, but kids adj ust qullckiy."
One parent pointed out that eigh t
to 10 yea rs ago Salem Center was
promised a larger school. large r
playground and better supervision.
What happens to all we have done?
We have lost our identity. I will
fight till the end of my strength to
keep the school here. We want Sa ·

taxpayf'r.

Morris a nswered I understand
your feelings. The rc<:ommPnda-

Judge Roderick described voluntary manslaughter as the purposeful taking of life .. . "with extreme

Don't wri te any golfing epitaphs for 42-year -old Jack Nickl aus yet,

One of the common faults of span s is that fans and historians alike ar e

" It happened to Hoga n. It happened to Palmer. Now it' s happening to
Nicklaus." was one of the overheard comments.
"Nerves are the fi rst thing to go, " sa id someone else. "You lose it on the
greens ."
" It gets tough after 40," added another.
This Is old hat to Nicklaus, who has made a car eer ofknocklngover such
fii msy ghosts . Year s ago, Sa m Snead and Ralph Beard predicted he would
bum himself o ut before he reached 30.

"When I feel! can no longer be com petitive, I won't try to hang on, I'll
ha ng it up," Nicklaus insists. " That time hasn't come. I still enjoy the

unveils tax credit plan

WASIDNGTON - President Reagan, declaring that "working
Americans are overtaxed and underappreclated," unveiled a pro·
gram today that would let most parents claim tax credits to help
send their children to private schools.
The only ones left out would be those making more than $75,000 a
year.
Taking a step admlnlstratlon officials acknowledged was intended
to boost Reagan's standing with lower-and middle-Income parents
who Sfnd their children to parochial schools, the president said:
Reagan was flying to Chicago this mornlng to disclose the plan In a
speech to the National Catholic Educational Association, which represents 10,1XXJ Roman Catholic schools.

Change could reduce 4poor'
WASlflNGTON - The number of "poor" Americans could be
rectuced by as much as 42 percent simply by redefining what counts
as Income, aecordJng to a new Census Bureau study.
The report, Issued Wednesday, concluded that counting govern·
ment food, housing and medical assistance as Income would push
between 12 percent and 42 percent of poor above the officially de·
tined level of poverty.
Their Income would appear to rise because of the change In calcu·
'latlon methods, although It would not mean any more actual money
or aid tor the poor. Indeed, the change could mean less for famllles
which become Ineligible tor assistance because of the Increased
Income calculation.
