With increased indlv.i dual support and the addition of corporate sponsors, the intent of the tour nament - to help local charities, the needy, and civic organizalions has been restored to a larger magnitude. Following the meal tournament host Diles gave a welcome and began opening ceremonies, thankIng thOse who have stood behind the event and contributed to It s success over the years. Diles also thanked those who have worked especially hard during this past year to present a most successful 1985 tournament. Diles was especially appreciative to the corporate sponsors of this year 's event. Among those thanked was the Roush family, owners of the Rlvers.Ide Golf C)ub ln Mason. Initiating many of the awards which were presented throughout the night, Diles recognized several participants from last year's event. Local businessman Joe Clark was presented the "Tree Trimmers" award for his pruning of the Riverside landscape, while In a " toss-up" Bill Francis edged Benny Ewing for the "Sapdtrap Construe- tlon" award. Another local businessman, Paul Simon, r~lved honors for the "Carp Feeder's Award ." Four rounds of' golf al Kings Island was auctioned to Don Klng for $125, while clubhouse seats for four at the 1986 Jack Nicklaus Mulrfleld-Memorlal Tournament went to Bill Blower at a cost of$335 . Concluding the event Middleport councilman Bob Gilmore an-. nounced a proclamation by the Middleport council, proclaiming that the newly established VIllage park be named the "Dave Diles Riverside Park." The proclamation stated council was pleased of the national publicity given to the community and was grateful for Diles' continued work and contributions .to the ·c ommlin· ity, Including the annual Dave Diles Celebrity Golf Classic. Besides I he extended than ks to all tournament sponsors, Bill Childs, Yvonne Scally, Paul Dailey, Joe and Jerry Rlepehoff, and Kenny Kerr were recognized for their worll on the annual sertes. The annual "Good Guy" awards were then presented by Diles, the first given to former football player and coach Johnnv Pont. Pont, a former college greai, coached at Indiana University and other col· leges and Is now coaching at Hamilton High School. Otner "Good Guy" awards went to Harold MacEihaney, Athietlc Director. at Ohio University; Dr. C.harles Ping, President or Ohio University; and Eddie Rosenburg, a long-time participant In the Diles ' Classic. · Cleve Beyant , the newly named football coach at Ohio University, was announced. He said, "I only hope to continue to Improve on what we did,when I was a player. This Is my main goal." Perhaps the main highlight of the evening was the presentation by former Associated Press Writer, Frltz Howell , Who was Diles' · mentor 'during the early stages of his career. Howell received a Special ·Good Guy award in commemoration for his influence on Diles' work. Howell entertained the crowd with his humor and wit , citing stories from his traveling days with Diles. Bill Nelson apd Paul Simon were then selected to auction oft various Items to benefit the charity of the tournament. A combination of Nelson and Simon's effective bargaining, along with the generosity of the crowd was quite lucrative for the tournament. The first Item auctioned was an Anthony Munoz-Cinclnnatl Bengal football jersey, sold to Paul Dailey for $65. Eddie Rosenburg purchased the Mike Pruitt-worn Cleve-land Brown jersey for $100, then presented the jersey to young Max Blake of Middleport. The kindly gesture brought a big round of applatise from the crowd. Bob Freed. who devoted many hours to the Diles tournament on a full-time basis, was honored for his leadership and deV\>tlon. It's a -miracle that Jack had presence oi mind to get out of the bulldlng following the explosion and a fire that developed. His hair and clothing were on fire and he rolled to extinguish the blaze. H_e then rode a small bike back to hls home - and his wife, Glenna, was shocked to see the extent of his Injuries. He was taken t.o Veterans Memorial Hospital and then by Llfenlght to University Hospital where . he has undergone skin grafting to hJs hands. An aide to Amal leader Nabih Berri said Simon Grossmayer was released and taken to American University Hospital in west Beirut for treatment of an undisclosed allment. Grossmayer was taken to the hospital from Berri's home in west Beirut to the hospital. There had been reports he was to have been put aboard a plane for Cyprus but the last flight to Cyprus left without him . A spokesman at the Lebanese Ministry of Information confirmed Grossmayer's release and said he was receiving treatment at American University Hospital. aut the spokesman said hE' did not know If the treatment was linked to lung or chest problems. Grossmay«:>r, 57, of Algonquin, Ill. , had a lung removed some years ago and Berrl said earlier this week he was considering releasing htm.
