BASEBALL SCOREBOARD

NEW YORK (UPI) - The only thing that can compare with
a woman scorned is a woman wronged.
Muriel Grossfeld figures she has been.
She's so tiled up, .she's spitting nails, and when she gets
• through doing that, she says she's going Iosee her lawyer.
For those of you w)lo confine yourselves to such less esoteric
sports as baseball, f~lball and basketball, Muriel Grossfeld
still ranks as one of the foremost female gyrnnaSlS this country
ever produced, having competed for the United States in the
1956, 1960 and 1964 Olympics as well as in numerous other
international competitions.
What's got her so exercised now is an article in the
' September issue of Penthouse written by Robert Stephen Spitz,
who compares some of the places in America where young
boys and girls are trained in athletics to a Martne boot camp.
Among those places he zeroes in on are Mission Viejo, Calif.,
where swimming is revered over even godliness and
Grossfeld's School of Gynmaslics in Milford, Conn., where he
says Muriel runs some 400 girl gymnasts ranging in age from
12 to 17 as if she were some kind of female Captain Bligh.
"look, 1 do anything I have to to produce a winner - and
these girls are all winners," Grossfeld is quoted by Spitz. "I
have to keep them scared. If it takes a little abuse to achieve
my ends, then that's the price they pay. They 'll thank me
later.' '
Grossleld's practice sessions, according to Spitz, have been
rumored to he "tantamount to slave labor camps and many of
them end with her girl trainees crying hysterically out of pain
and humiliation. ' '

She is even said to regulate the girls ' sex lives.
When I spoke with her about all this, Grossleld said she was
"appalled at the lack of correctness" in the article.
" II 's all a pile of garbage," she said. "We doo 'I stand over
tile girls with hammers. I've never seen any of them cry after
practice. I do not keep my children scared. The kids we have
are seni here by their parents. If the kids didn't like what
tlley 're doing, ihey wouldn't come in the first place. Some of
tllem live here and others in their own homes. we have what
we call an 'elite program' for those we think might q~lify. for
international competition, but we don't allow anyone to try for
tllat level unless we feel ihey have the necessary personality
and physical ability.
·
"'No one at the school regulates the girls' sex lives. That's
sheer nonsense. We have no dating rules for those who Uve
here. For the ones who do, we talk to the boys whenever they
come here to date the girls, ihe same way any responsible
parent would. Is ihere anything wrong with that•"
Grossfeld certainly doesn 't consider herself a martinet .
"I've heard it said I'm very tough," she says. " I don't think
my kids would defy me. Acoach has to use whatever weapoos
he or she has in order to help the child move forward .
Motivation that's positive is 100 per cent better than
motivation tllat's negative . That's my feeling about it,
anyway. ''

Generally rated the top women's gynmastic coach in the
nation, Grossfeld, who still works out regularly on tile bars and
doesn 't look her 36 years, sometimes talks the same way AI

Davis of the Oakland Raiders does.
"My whole bag is the pursuit of excellence," she says. "Back
in my day when I first started to train, the United States
traditionally was last in gynmastics. We're trying to improve
tllal . At the moment, I'd say our gynmastics team is hi ghly
respected. Our women 's team , which competes in tile World
Championships in France in October, has beaten Japan, and
many regard tile Japanese the best in tile world .''
From having seen her when she was still competing, I know
tile way Grossfeld works. She's a perfectionist who demands
tile most from herseH and quite likely the same from others.
Whetller she asks too much from tile girls she trains I don 't
know.
What I do know is ihat some kids starting out, wheiher it be
in the LiiUe Leagues, the swinuning pools or in gymnastics,
are pushed too hard sometimes by their instructors and their
parents.
They just don't have any fun, and that'• not what sports are
supposed to be all about .

can I do to get rid of this ? Sally.
DEAR SALLY...: You might
try sponging the mattresS

water solution but do be very
careful to not let any soak into the fillmg. This would
doubtless work better if the
mattre5s· could be taken out
of doors 'and then he left to

mattrrss must remain indoors, folded· sheets of
newspapers between the bed
pad and ·mattress might absorb the odor if left for a week

DEAR DR. BLAKER
Vesterda)' I went to divorce
court. After a llhort exchange
between my lawyer and the
judge, it was aU over.
I am now free after II years
of marriage. It was strange to
have thai important a decision handed down with such
brevity and lack ol emoUon. I
went home feeling empty.
I still feel terrible today. I
thought the worst time was
right after we decided to
divorce. We divided our
belongings, told our friends
and coosulted lawyers and

That was depressing and
frightening, but I recovered
and dido 'l expect to get upset
again.
Now, six montha later,l am
miserable. Why did aU these
terrible feelings come hack?
Does it mean ·I will never
recover from this traumatic
event?
DEAR READER - Doo't
worry. You will recover,
tbough the painful . feellnp
will continue t.o sweep over
you Uke waves for some time.
Eventually that wUJ happen
less frequently and the inlen·
sity of the hurt will begin to
fade. Finally it will become
like an old wound; you know
it's there, but it doesn't hurt

anymore.

The finality of the legal action probably precioitat.:d
your present emotional 'reaction. Divorce Is a critical
event in a person's life. Yet,
in our society, we .handle it in
such an impersonal manner.
We have ceremonll!lllo help
people negoU.te birth, puber·
ty, marriage and death. But
there are none for divorce. ·
This prose-poem by Earl A.
Grollm2n · may help you
understand some of the
reasons why you are so upset
right now:
Divorce is a kind of death.
In many ways it is worse.
With death, there Is a funeral.
