CDC: Fully vaccinated
people can largely
ditch masks indoors
By Zeke Miller and
Michael Balsamo
Associated Press

WASHINGTON —
In a move to send the
country back toward
pre-pandemic life, the
Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention on Thursday eased
indoor mask-wearing
guidance for fully vaccinated people, allowing them to safely stop
wearing masks inside in
most places.
The new guidance
still calls for wearing masks in crowded
indoor settings like
buses, planes, hospitals,
prisons and homeless shelters but will
help clear the way for

reopening workplaces,
schools, and other venues — even removing
the need for masks or
social distancing for
those who are fully vaccinated.
“We have all longed
for this moment —
when we can get
back to some sense
of normalcy,” said Dr.
Rochelle Walensky, the
director of the CDC.
The CDC will also no
longer recommend that
fully vaccinated people
wear masks outdoors in
crowds. The announcement comes as the CDC
and the Biden administration have faced pressure to ease

MIDDLEPORT
— Dennis Saelens,
77, of Middleport,
Ohio, well known
businessman,
passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2021
at Kobacker House
in Columbus, Ohio.
Dennis was born on
May 2, 1944 in Moline,
Illinois, son of the late
Adolph and Loretta McKevitt. He graduated from
Middleport High School
in 1962 and continued
his education by earning a Bachelors Degree
of Science in Education
from Rio Grande. He
utilized his degree as a
social studies teacher having taught at Logan and
Gallipolis High School.
Dennis owned and operated Adolph’s Dairy Valley for twenty years. It
was famously known for
their foot long hot dogs
and sauce. He took much
pride in running the business his father Adolph
Saelens crated and ran for
twenty-five years prior
to Dennis taking it over.
He was always looking
to help others, loved volunteering at the Sacred
Heart Church, doing yard
work and feeding his
woodland critters.
Dennis was a humble
hard worker and loving
husband to his wife of 51
years, Carla, who survives
him. He is also survived
by a sister Lucile (Dean)
Grossholz; nephews
Christopher (Ruth) Wilt,
Patrick (Greg) Wilt,
Gregory (Walter) Wilt
Wright and Michael

ish in Pomeroy,

place at Sacred
Heart Cemetery in

have been entrusted to the
Ewing-Schwarzel Funeral
Home in Pomeroy.
To share your thoughts
and memories an online
register book is available
at ewingfuneralhome.net.
Dennis will be sadly
missed by all those who
knew him. He was one
of a kind and will always
remain in our hearts
and memories. He truly
blessed so many without
wanting praise or recognition for his tasks. His
wife Carla will carry on
his legacy.
Many thanks to all
those who prayed and
supported us during our
long journey of battling
cancer and its complications. He fought the
battle in his usual determined manner until there
was no further hope. He
realized God had a plan.
He is resting in peace
now and having a glorious reunion in Heaven
with the Lord and family.
We want to thank all
the medical staff who
diligently treated him.
The staff at O’Bleness in
Athens, Riverside Hospital and Kobacker House
in Columbus for their
compassion and excellent care. Also a special
thanks to our RCP Dr.
Douglas Hunter and staff

Masks

their lowest rate since
September, deaths are at
their lowest point since
last April and the test
positivity rate is at the
lowest point since the
pandemic began.
To date about 154 million Americans, more
than 46% of the population, have received at
least one dose of the
COVID-19 vaccines and
more than 117 million are
fully vaccinated. The rate
of new vaccinations has
slowed in recent weeks,
but with the authorization Wednesday of the
Pfizer vaccine for children ages 12 to 15, a new
burst of doses is expected
in the coming days.
Just two weeks ago, the
CDC recommended that
fully vaccinated people
continue to wear masks

indoors in all settings and
outdoors in large crowds.
During a virtual meeting Tuesday on vaccinations with a bipartisan
group of governors, Biden
appeared to acknowledge
that his administration
had to do more to model
the benefits of vaccination.
“I would like to say that
we have fully vaccinated
people; we should start
acting like it,” Utah Gov.
Spencer Cox, a Republican, told Biden. “And
that’s a big motivation get
the unvaccinated to want
to to get vaccinated.”
“Good point,” Biden
responded. He added,
“We’re going to be moving on that in the next
little bit.”
Walensky said the evidence from the U.S. and

Israel shows the vaccines
are as strongly protective in real-world use as
they were in earlier studies, and that so far they
continue to work even
though some worrying
mutated versions of the
virus are spreading.
The more people continue to get vaccinated,
the faster infections will
drop — and the harder
it will be for the virus to
mutate enough to escape
vaccines, she stressed,
urging everyone 12 and
older who’s not yet vaccinated to sign up.
And while some
people still get COVID19 despite vaccination,
Walensky said that’s rare
and cited evidence that
those infections tend to
be milder, shorter and
harder to spread to oth-

ers. If someone who’s
vaccinated does develop
COVID-19 symptoms,
they should immediately
put their mask back on
and get tested, she said.
There are some caveats.
Walensky encouraged
people who have weak
immune systems, such as
from organ transplants or
cancer treatment, to talk
with their doctors before
shedding their masks.
That’s because of continued uncertainty about
whether the vaccines
can rev up a weakened
immune system as well as
they do normal, healthy
ones.

inning of a May 11 baseball game against Point Pleasant in Point Pleasant, W.Va.

BASEBALL ROUNDUP

The high school postseason
is just around the corner, but
the roads to the district tournament were paved Sunday
afternoon as the 2021 OHSAA
Southeast District baseball
tournaments were officially
released for all four divisions
throughout the state.
A half-dozen Ohio Valley
Publishing schools — Gallia
Academy, Meigs, River Valley,
Southern, South Gallia and
Eastern — now know where
their opening games will be
and who they will be facing
in their respective sectional
matchups.
Only one of the six area pro-

grams need a single win to get
out of sectional play, while the
other handful need two victories to advance to their respective district rounds.
Half of the local programs
will compete in the Division
IV tournament, where Eastern
sits as the lone team facing a
win-and-in scenario for the district level. The Eagles earned a
seven seed and will host 10th
seeded Waterford in a sectional
final at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May
18.
Southern came away with
the 12 seed and will host 21st
seeded Pike Western in a sectional semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 15.
The winner advances to the
sectional final on Tuesday,

May 18, and will travel to fifth
seeded Huntington Ross for a 5
p.m. start.
South Gallia earned the 19
seed and will travel to 14th
seeded Peebles for a sectional
semifinal at 5 p.m. Saturday,
May 15.
The winner advances to the
sectional final on Tuesday,
May 18, and will travel to third
seeded Portsmouth Clay for a 5
p.m. start.
Division IV district tournament play will start Saturday,
May 22.
A pair of Division III programs — Meigs and River Valley — will need to win twice
to reach the district semifinal

SOFTBALL ROUNDUP

White Falcons
outlast Charleston
Catholic, 10-8
From staff reports

Finally, some good fortunes … and against the
Irish no less. Wahama snapped a 3-game losing
skid on Wednesday night with a wire-to-wire 10-8
victory over host Charleston Catholic in a nonconference matchup. The White Falcons (5-7)
led 2-0 after an inning of play as an Ethan Gray
sacrifice fly and a Trey Ohlinger single resulted in
RBIs, then the guests extended their lead out to
4-1 midway through the fifth. The Irish, however,
countered with two scores to close the gap back
down to a run, but WHS answered by sending 11
hitters to the plate in the top of the sixth — which
resulted in six runs on seven hits and a pair of
CCHS errors for a 10-3 cushion. The Irish scored
a run in the sixth and tacked on four more scores
in the home half of the seventh, but ultimately left
the bases loaded with nobody out in the frame.
Wahama outhit the hosts by a 14-8 overall margin
and both teams committed three errors apiece.
Bryce Zuspan picked up the win after allowing
one run, three hits and a walk over four innings
of work. Ethyn Barnitz paced WHS with three
hits and three runs scored, while Gray, Ohlinger,
Logan Roach, Aaron Henry and Zachary Fields
each chipped in two safeties. Gray also led the
guests with four RBIs. Armstrong led Charleston
Catholic with two hits and Hufford knocked in a
team-best two RBIs.

Champions once again. The Meigs baseball team
earned at least a share of its 10th Tri-Valley Conference Ohio Division championship on Wednesday in Rocksprings, defeating guest Wellston 6-0.
Meigs (11-8, 9-1 TVC Ohio) — which claimed
a 1-0 victory in its first meeting with WHS on
April 19 — went up 4-0 in the second inning on
Wednesday, with five hits and a walk in the inning.
Ethan Stewart led the next inning off with a home
run, and Meigs added another run after a walk
and two hits. Wellston (11-13, 4-7) stranded three
runners on base in the first six frames, but didn’t
reach third until the finale, when WHS stranded

Perfect through 10.
The Wahama softball
team improved to 10-0
with a 7-1 victory over
non-conference guest
Point Pleasant on
Wednesday in Hartford.
The Lady Falcons led 1-0
after a Lauren Noble RBI
double with two outs in
the opening inning. WHS
was ahead 7-0 after scoring twice in each of the
next three innings, with
just three hits in that
span. The Lady Knights
(8-6) — who left runners
two runners in scoring
position in the third
inning — ended the shut
out bid in the top of the
seventh, as Kylie Price led
off with a solo home run.
Price’s home run ended
the Lady Falcons string
of 28 straight innings
without allowing a run.
PPHS put another runner
in scoring position in the
inning, but ultimately left
the runner at second and
fell 7-1. Mikie Lieving
was the winning pitcher
in a complete game, striking out eight for WHS.
Rylee Cochran took the
loss in 3.1 frames for
Point Pleasant, striking
out one. Madilyn Keefer
finished the game for the
guests and struck out
three. Leading the Lady
Falcon offense, Noble was
3-for-4 with a double, a
run scored and three runs
batted in, Lieving went
2-for-4 with a run scored

and an RBI, while Emma
Gibbs singled once,
scored once and drove
in a run. Cochran, Price,
Tayah Fetty, Havin Roush
and Kaylee Byus had a hit
each for PPHS, with Fetty
and Roush both making it
an extra base.
Athens 11, River Valley 1
The seventh-seeded
River Valley softball team
— which fell to Athens
5-1 and 8-4 in the regular
season — couldn’t make
the third time the charm,
as the second-seeded
Lady Bulldogs won their
first sectional title since
2009 with a 11-1 victory
on Wednesday in The
Plains. AHS (23-5) took
a 4-0 lead with back-toback extra base hits with
two outs in the opening
inning. The Lady Bulldogs added another run
on a Kendra Hammonds
RBI in the second, but
the Lady Raiders (158) got on the board in
the top of the third, as
Grace Hash singled and
later scored on an error.
Athens scored three
times in the home third,
however, and then capped
off the 11-1 win with a
three-run home run from
Hammonds in the sixth.
Ashleigh James was the
winning pitcher in a complete game, striking out
four for Athens. Abbi Hollanbaugh took the pitching loss in three innings
for RVHS, striking out
two. Hash, Brooklyn Sizemore, Riley Bradley, Sier-

ra Somerville and Sophia
Gee recorded a hit apiece
for the Silver and Black,
with Sizemore doubling
for the team’s only extrabase hit. Hammonds led
the victors, going 3-for-4
with four runs batted in.

RBI. Leading Wellston,
Sadie Henry was 4-for-4
with three runs scored
and two runs batted in,
while Alyssa Petersen
went 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two
RBIs.

Wellston 13, Meigs 1
The Meigs softball
team had a chance to play
spoiler on Wednesday
on its home field, but
couldn’t prevent Wellston
from claiming its share of
the Tri-Valley Conference
Ohio Division title, falling to the Lady Rockets
13-1. WHS (16-6, 11-1
TVC Ohio) — which
shares the league crown
with Athens — took a
5-0 lead after six hits in
the opening frame. Meigs
(9-10, 3-6) got a run back
on a bases loaded walk in
the bottom of the inning,
but didn’t score again.
Wellston’s lead was 6-1
after a Maddie Potts RBI
single in the third inning,
and then plated three
runs on three hits and
an error in the fourth.
WHS sealed the 13-1 victory with a four-run sixth
inning, featuring four hits
and two walks. Potts was
the winning pitcher in a
complete game, striking
out four. Hailey Roberts
took the pitching loss for
MHS, striking out one.
Mallory Adams led the
hosts at the plate, going
2-for-3 with a double. Jerrica Smith also doubled
for Meigs, while Hannah
Durst had a single and an

runners in scoring position over the first six
innings, with a pair of
runners being thrown out
at the plate in the opening frame. Alexander,
meanwhile, left four runners in scoring position in
the game, with a runner

in the top of the fifth.
Megan Maxon was hit
