Black wealth has been
sapped, again and again,
by racism and racist violence -- forcing generation
after generation to start
from scratch while shouldering the burdens of
being Black in America.
All in the shadow of a
Black paradise lost.
“Greenwood proved
that if you had assets, you
could accumulate wealth,”

said Jim Goodwin, publisher of the Oklahoma
Eagle, the local Black
newspaper established
in Tulsa a year after the
massacre.
“It was not a matter
of intelligence, that the
Black man was inferior to
white men. It disproved
the whole idea that racial
superiority was a fact of
life.”

Japan says US
travel warning
for virus won’t
hurt Olympians
TOKYO (AP) — The Japanese government
Tuesday was quick to deny a U.S. warning for
Americans to avoid traveling to Japan would have
an impact on Olympians wanting to compete in
the postponed Tokyo Games.
U.S. officials cited a surge in coronavirus cases
in Japan caused by virus variants that may even
be risky to vaccinated people. They didn’t ban
Americans from visiting Japan, but the warnings
could affect insurance rates and whether Olympic
athletes and other participants decide to join the
games that open on July 23.
Most metro areas in Japan are under a state of
emergency and expected to remain so through
mid-June because of rising serious COVID-19
cases that are putting pressure on the country’s
medical care systems. That raises concern about
how the country could cope with the arrival of
tens of thousands of Olympic participants if its
hospitals remain stressed and little of its population is vaccinated.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at
a news conference Tuesday that the warning does
not prohibit essential travel and Japan believes the
U.S. support for Tokyo’s effort to hold the Olympics is unchanged.
“We believe there is no change to the U.S. position supporting the Japanese government’s determination to achieve the games,” Kato said, adding
that Washington has told Tokyo the travel warning
is not related to the participation of the U.S. Olympic team.
The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee said it still anticipates American athletes
will be able to safely compete at the Tokyo Games.
Seiko Hashimoto, the president of the Tokyo
Olympic organizing committee, echoed the
remarks of the USOPC.
“I’m aware the USOPC said that the advisory
wouldn’t affect the games,” she said. “I think it’s
important for us to prepare well to accept athletes
under such restrictions.”
Fans coming from abroad were banned from the
Tokyo Olympics months ago, but athletes, families, sporting officials from around the world and
other stakeholders still amount to a mass influx
of international travelers. In opinion polls, the
Japanese public has expressed opposition to holding the games out of safety concerns while most
people will not be vaccinated.

The NHL last week investigated
testing irregularities that led to multiple false positives for the Blues and
Vegas Golden Knights and found it
to be a laboratory error. Vegas coach
Peter DeBoer said his team had nine
false positives in one day.
After 51 regular-season games
were postponed, none have had to
be pushed back so far in the playoffs.
The only potential scare was Game
2 between Colorado and St. Louis,
which went ahead after a league investigation.
“You are always worried about false

Since the playoffs began May 15,

Perron, Walker, Walman, Kuznetsov

West was suspended for

He was awarded

of the game.
Paint Valley, however, was up
9-6 after the bottom of the sixth,
RBI single by Free, followed by an
two-run single from Beau Blankenship.
With two outs in the top of the
seventh, Brayden Smith tripled
home Brad Hawk, and then scored
on a passed ball to bring the
Eagles within one. However, Blaine
Parker made a diving catch in right
field for the final out, securing the
Bearcats’ 9-8 victory.
Estep was the winning pitcher
of record in four innings of relief,
striking out five batters. Free
started for the Bearcats, striking
out two batters in three innings of
work.
Conner Ridenour took the pitching loss in 2.1 innings of relief
for Eastern, striking out a pair.
Brayden Smith pitched the first 3.2
frames and struck out five.
Blanchard led the Eagle offense,
going 2-for-3 with two triples, a
run scored and an RBI. Smith tripled once, scored once and drove
in a run, while Parker, Ridenour,
Hawk, Hawley, Jace Bullington
and Preston Thorla each singled
once, with Parker scoring twice
and driving in a run, while Hawley,
Hawk, Bullington and Thorla each
scored once.
Following the season-ending setback, first-year Eagles head coach
Chris Stewart spoke highly of his
departing seniors.
“I don’t know that I could have
come into a situation like I did at
the last minute, and have a better
group of leaders,” Stewart said.
“They exemplify the character
you’re hoping to have, the heart
and the passion, the energy, the
love for the game and the love for
each other. They do not let anyone
get down in that dugout.
“We have a big group of seniors,
and then we have some young
ones, and they take these younger
kids under their arm and they’re
constantly encouraging them. It’s
why a guy like Ryan Parker was
able to step up and be the kind of
player he was tonight, in a role
he wasn’t expecting to play. Will
Oldaker was sick today, and hey,
next man up. The reason a young
kid could do that is the leadership
those older kids have provided,
and that’s the thing we’re going
to miss the most. Now we have to
duplicate it, because they’ve really
been the example of what you’re
looking for in a group of kids that
play baseball.”
Free and Blankenship led Paint
Valley, each recording two hits and
scoring once, with four and two
RBIs respectively. Trent Mettler
singled once and scored twice for
PVHS, while Estep and Devlen
Spradin both singled once and
scored once, with Estep also picking up an RBI.
