Coronary Heart Disease
Can Nbw Be Preve~tecl

Joust At Vitamin Pill
Gove:rnment hearings into the vitamin
pill Industry drag on. This Is a ,bUJ!pels
lbe Food and Dru« Administration would
like to clamp down on, maintaining that
most people don't need vitamins or other

food aupplements.

Manufacturers in turn bave claimed that
tbe agency has been playing dirty pool at
the hearings. Latest charge is that the
FDA has commissioned a public oplolon
survey. so rigged with true-or~false questions lhat it is guaranteed to reveal widelpread ignorance about. health.
Now, undoubtedly a lot of people are
taking vitamins and stoff that they really
don: t need, or whose benefits they could
denve from a better-balanced diet. And
undoubtedly some manufacturers would
just as soon have them go on buying their

producls.
But In the absence of proof that people
are actually harming themselves-prOof
that has not been forthcoming-the govem-

·ment's role tn this matter might more
properly be to concentrate on the areas of
education and regulation , the latter being
the maintaining of quaUty standards anc!
the prosecution of outright fraudulent advertising.

In view of the fact that the best that the
government has seen fit to do with clcarettes, which nearly every medical authority believes are injurious if not down·
right deadly and which even their makers
don't claim are good for the health, la
merely to require a mildly cautionary
label on everr package, the FDA's war
against vitamans suggests a case of massi'\le overkill against a doubtful enemy .

The Computerized Fielder
So someone takes you out to the ball
game next summer and vou witness a
fine display of Ry ball sniogging by ace
outfielder Joe Fungo. You may not know
it, nor may Joe himself, but what you
have also ·witnessed is a practical demonstration of the solution of somewhat involved problems in trigonometry.
Seville Chapman, director of the physics
division at Cornell Aeronautical Labora~
tory, tetis how Joe does it, as reported In
Scientific American.
Consider first balls hit in a direct line
with the outfielder. The ooly changes he
can see in the position of the ball are in
the vertical. Ir what he sees is that the
tangent of the angle of elevation of the
ball (the angle between the ball and the
horizontal as measured from the fielder's
eyes) increases uniformly with time, be
just stands still and waits for it to come
to him.
If the tangent of elevation increases at
a decreasing rate, he knows it's a pop fly

to the Infield. If, however, the tangent as
he sees it increases at an increasing rate,
the ball could be on its way out of tbe
park.
Clear'?

Now suppose Joe has to run 50 feet
forward or hsckward to caleb the ball.
Ordinarily, he doesn't run the 50 feet at
top speed and then stop and walt for the
ball. Instead, he runs at a constant speed
that will maintain a constant rate of increase· in the tangent of angle of elevation
of the ball.
Balls hit to the side are easier, says
Chapman. In addition to the information
about elevation angle and its rate of
change, there is now information about
azimuth arude and its rate of change.
Enough. Reither Joe nor the fans care
about this. As a good ball player, Joe
acts as U' he were automatically programed by a computer.
And he is, by the original computer of
them all-the human brain.
