Those great plies of stone and steel and concrete we call
cilles are nat the Jungles they are often called. They're
really zoos.
The claim Is made appropriately enough, by a zoologist
in a new book entiU;d, not surprisingly, "'l'he Human Zoo."
"Under normal conditions, In their natural habitats, wild
anlmala do not mutilate themselves, attack their offspring,
develop atomach ulcers, become lellshists, suffer from
obesity, form homosexual pair-bonds or commit murder,"
writes Desmond Morris. Among city dwellers all these
things occur, as they do among animals confined under
unnatural conditions of captivity.
The modem human animal Is no longer living In conditions natural lor his species, says Morris. "Trapped nat
by a zoo collector but by his own brainy brilliance, he has
set himself up in a huge, restless menagerie where he is
in constant danger of cracking under the strain."
But bad as It all is, we shouldn't wish to "~o back" even
if it were possible because, d~spite the dllllcultles, the
benefits in the human zoo are tremendous. The zoo, like a
gigantic parent, protects Its inmates and provides them
with food, drink, shelter, hygiene and medical care. The
basic ~roblems of survival are reduced to a minimum.
There lS time to spare.
Furthermore, he says, there is something in the human
animal that obtains deep satisfaction from being thrown
into the urban chaos. This Is man's insatiable curiosity,
his Inventiveness, his intellectual athleticism. The urban
turmoil seems to energize these qualities. This Is what
keeps the system going despite its many disadvantages.
Think about that while you're angling lor a slot in the
rush-hour freeway tralllc or struggling with the other zoo
denizens for a seat on the 5:15.

up to be. So charges McCall's magazine, pointing out that
the traHic carnage is getting worse, particularly among the
youngest drivers.
Despite the doubling of driver education during the past
decade, the number of 18- and 17·,Year-old drivers involved
in aceldents resulting in death or mjury shot up 50 per eent
between 1984 and IIMI8. This Is precisely the age group
which is ~g driver education courses in ..,hool.
Three-quarters of all high ..,hool programs offer 00 hours
of classroom leetures and six hours' experience behind the
wheel, a combination conaldered "much too thin" by the
National Safety Council. Recent studies in Mtssloslppi and
Calllomta comparing the aofety records of driver-eel graduates and drivers who didn't take a course showed almost
identical results lor both groups.
The article broaches the heresy that perhaps dsd Is nat
the worst driving teacher a young person could bave,
although this has long been an aziom among educators.
It recommends that parents consider a driver-eel course
as only the beginning of a teen-ager's training and that
they be prepared to devote 20 hours of their own time to
giving him supplemental Instruction.
It also suggests that parents keep a young driver on'
probation for bls first two years behind the wheel and that
he is probably safer If he does not have his own car during
that Ume.
