yQU tllat d your deodorant

consequences.
At least not if an opinion re.
cently handed down by a tri•l
exami,ner for the National Labor
Relations Board is adopted .u
federal policy.

In what may be a landmark
case, the examiner stated that
firing an employee for
failing

to keep himself in an acceptable state of deodorization would
not constit ute an unfair labor
practice.
As far as I could learn. this
was the first Ume that the U.S.
government in all of its solemn
majesty has exercised any sort
of jurisdiction over BO.
Heretofore, the problem has
more ur less been regarded as
a local issue to be dealt with
within the framework of the
free enterprise system.
OiKharge Contestrtf
The case in point invol vta!f A
food store employet! whose discharge wa!\ contested by the
Retail Clerks union. Manage·
ment maintained he was let go
for aromatic reasons after being told that he would have to
ust! a stronger deodorant.
The union, on the other hand ,
1nsisted. that he was terminated
for organizational activities.
Examiner Phil W. Saunders,

who beard the case, ruled in
favor of the union. But In doing
&0, he also took a precedentletttns position on the BO question . tying It in with thtt march
of civilization tself.

13,000 spectators and some 1,000 alh·

after the music started, Hungarian shot
put star Vilmas Varlu tapped the Romanian on the shoulder and she got to her
feet. Hut she didn 't stand still; she bent
over and dug into her little travel bag,
pulled out a bottle and took a drink from
it , replaced it in the bag, then dove in
for either a Lemon or an orange, on
which she sucked all during "The Star·
Spa ngled Banner."
Excuses? Well, maybe she didn't un·
derstand the announcement in English,
but certainly she should have recognized
the music when it started. After all, she
was m Tokyo at the Olympics this Summer. and it was played dozens of times
there - every time one of our athletes
walked off with a gold medal. Furiher·
more, any dope knows that when a
whole arena is standing at attention, and
a band is playing, it just might be a cluo
that SOMEBODY'S National Anthem was
involved: very few people stand at atten·
tion when they hear "Stardust."
It looked like a deliberate insult . At
the least. it looked as if the Olympic
games weren't accomplishing very much
in the way of international chumminess,
at any rate with Romania.
Imagine if you will the headlines and
smashlng of U. S. Embassy windows if
one o! our athletes had been seen by
thousands enJoying a snack while the
Romanian National Anthem was going
on.
