ernment's plan were the only eoiutlon to
the increasing costs of medical and sur&ical care. There are several other plana
that would be more inclusive at a reduction in cost. Many seem to forget that
there are countless programs for cJTing
for the less fortunate by countiea and
states, and the re.,.ntty implemented
Kerr-Mills plan would accomplish far
more than the medicaH plan. The plan
advanced by the American Medical Auociation would expand the Kerr-MUla fed•
tral-state program and authorize people
over 65 years to buy private health 1n·
surance providing Uberal hospital and
medical care. The &overnment would pay
part or all of the premium of poUcy hold·
ers who could not afford the coat. If the
individual's income were below a certain
figure they would not have to pay at all.
They would have to make a simple atate·
ment of Income with a state agency to
qualify themselves for free care.
There are many who do not need to
be assisted, and are perfectly capable of
paying for their own health lnaurance.

Ont of the controversial question• in
Congress is the matter of medicare. A recent Gallup poll shows that the majority
of Americans favor medicare, but there

be a tremendous cost.
