ARE faced every day of our Uves

by the problems that arise from the
econonucs of our country Many wnters
In the paot year or so have been trying
to convmce us that we are m a wonderful position, and they can take figures
and juggle them around to prove that
you are ll\'lng In UtopJa In their book
It ts not jult around the corner, but already present They attempt to prove
that you a:. not paying any more for
certain necessities of life than you were
say 10 or 20 years ago On the other
hand we read of the percen~ge of nse
in the coats of living, and with that the
cue the bottom drops nih! out of their
thesla.
One re""nt piece that we read indicated that not too long ago most American families had to spend the bulk of
their inoomea on the nece•sltles of life.
According to him they had tittle left
over for the luxuries of life. The change
they claim that has taken place Is to the
degree that families now spend only 48
per cent of its after tax income on the
food, clothmf and shelter to satisfy Its
needs. If tha be the case we should all
have 52 per cent of our take home pay
to spend or not to spend as we please If
that were true a great many families
would like to know the secret of how 1t

Our Economy
omy that is not equalled any place else
on earth. They say it 1s a tribute to the
Amencan free enterpnse system, and
that credit should ~o to Industry, a~ri
culture and labor. w~o have made maJor
cuntnbutwns to our present situation.
The mam cred1t for better liVIng
should go to mass dtstributwn, which
makes everythmg hlghly competitive. ~
wise spender has dozens of places from
which to purchase, and by ahopping around it '" ama•ing what one can save.
Not long ago thiS writer made a purchase
of an appliance, which is used •very day,
and saved $5 by comparative shopping.
There was a time when the chains came
in for a lot of criticism, but when the
truth is known they pioneered a type of
retailing that wa• balled on volume with
a small mark up made possible by mall
purchasing and quick turnover.
That philosophy of retailing has
meant a savin& of untold billions to American customers. Mass distribution and
mass production are full and equal partners in the current scene. Tht big major
problem with most buyers is that they
take on too many items that are not
needed, and then blame someone else for
the fact that it costs them more to live.
We still do not know the answer of how
we have 52 per cent of our money above
and beyond the necessities of lite to
apend.-
