Selection ol the "dream"
team - one of the main reaSODI behind the league - was
delegated by tho prlncipail af·
ter a few years to the coaches.
When the coaches brought down
the wrath of the fans by an obvious "boner" they decided to

all • Southeasterns have be<n
picked by league sports writers
and broadcasters.
This year there was a limited
attempt to restore the selections to the coaches. As a compromise the league recommended that each of the member
cities should be limited to a
single vote, necessitating split
votes.

However, this did not materlalize. The scribes association
believed the one-vote rule would
destroy
their
organization
(which buys awards and some
trophies) financial1y. They
therefore ignored the recommendation in their December
meeting.

Any observance of the anm·

years later claimed its first
crown and a bid to play at
Hamilton for lhe slate championship. That Theodore Robertocoached team lost the post-season game, 25 to 7, but aroused
a football championship lradition fo r Jackson.
Mainly because of an unprecedented

der Coach Gene Slaughter, the
Jackson Ironmen have a dozen
titles, are dead - locked with
Middleport with the most consecutive conference victories at
19 and have an edge in the
all - time standings that cannot be challenged for several
years.
Coach Mel Adams has directed
his Logan team to two
consecutive perfect championships to just overtake Jackson
in the point standings during
the 25-year span of round-robin
play. Logan, now in second
place with seven titles, has a

Pomeroy has the record for

CONSOLIDATIONS

Consolidations that have increased the size of some of the
schools with a bigger potential
of athletes have Jell some of
the league member with a han·
dlcap - particuLarly Nelsonville and Middleport. ln both
places there has been sporadic
agitation to withdraw from the
league and play more equal
competition, but each s c h o o I
clings to ill membership.
Ironically
these , smaller
schools are the ones able to go
the farthest in state competi·
tion.
Middleport was a recent winner of the state Class A basebail championship and the 1962
Nelsonville basketball team of
Coach U>weU Cole won
the
league title and went to the
state Class A finals, losing to
Lockland Wayne. The only othor team from the league to advance to the state tournament
was Pomeroy with Tippy Dye as
its star, losing to Akron West.
