have been many suggested approaches to the unemployment pro•lema of our country, and we will need
lllenty before the situation is solved .
tlne of the things that makes it diffiru It
to understand is why it should be in a
period of unprecedented economic activ Ity and growth. In Europe, which was
torn asunder during the great war. with
almost whole cities destroyed there is
very tittle and in many instances no unemployment. We all know that it is a
many-sided problem and genetally
speaking we are getting a rather late
start in recognizing that it contains more
than economic considerations. There are
very profound social and human values
that make up the problem, and most will
agree that those will have to be cleared
up before we can arrive at a generally
workable plan to get all the able bodied
persons in the ranks of workers.
The eyes of America will be on the
results that wiU come from the Ap~alach·
Ia btu which was signed Tuesday m Wa·
ohlngton by Pre•ident Johnson. There
are many doubters who do not feel that
It wUI even make a ripple In solving the
proble~s of the region of which we are
apart. Every citizen should watch the
outcome with tiJterest because unless it
works we wiU stiU be considered among
the unfortunate sections of our great
country. The biU Is just one approach to
the problems and we as individuals and
as businesses and corporatlons have a
llake in tile final solution of the econom-

lc ills of the hiUa.

One plan that llruck us as workable
bas been proposed by tho National AOB<>ciation of .Manufacturers. It Ia known u
STEP, which stands for "Solutions To
Employment Problems." The manufacturers have formed a clearing house to
1mf,lement the program which bas three
ob ectives. One is to facilitate tho exchange of information among members
on ne": methods .of training, solecling,
retrammg .and gmng their employees
new direction. One of the most interest·
ing objectives is to contribute to the activities of the community organizations
and businessmen working together to fit
the .Jobless into positions that might be
available. The final plan is to stimulate
community action In having a blueprint
for the development of expanded employment and to work out a master plan
for the economic growth of the community .
The efficiency of modern corpora·
!ions, who know bow to go about the
solvmg of we1gbty problems should give
the entire picture of employment a shot
in the arm. Most everyone Is aware of
the waste and duplication that Is found
In the ranks of government agencies.
The fact is that we need every group in
our communities working on such problems If they are ever to be solved. We
still have the faith in the ability of people themselves to solve problems, and
really aU they need Is a helping band
from the government.

The President has broken the

Mrs. Johnson takes the wives

These extraordinary skull sessions between President and

I get a lot of dark blobs iD
the movies I take, too, bot Ad·

He said they were pictures of

Either that, or Adamski hasn't learned to hold 1>1a camera
