West Germar.y bu been taking its share
of kicks lately.
By almost any measure, West Genna·
ny - the Fedrral Republlc of Gennany
- ranks among the top handful of na·
Uons. In terms of economics, it is once
more the strongest nation in Europe, ev·
en cut in half as it is.

dlacov..,..

Yet West Germany's fear that someone may extend diplomatic recognition to
Eaiil Germany has placed her In a posi·
tion to be easily blackmalled by anybody
unprincipled and opportiiilistlc enough to

do so.
Thus Gennany allowed its pollcy In
the Middle East to be virtually dictated
by Egypt, a country too small to be of
any real account but big enough to cause
trouble.
Germany halted its arms shipment!
to Israel, the official enemy of Egypt,
then winced and walled when Nasser of
Egypt entertained the puppet head of the
other Germany, tho so-called Democrat·
lc Republic.
But does It really matter what Egypt
- or even the whole Arab world, which
Nasser pretends to lead - does regard·
lng East Germany?
When anybody thinks of Germany, It
is West Germany that comes to mind.
East Germany is an artificial entity. bare·
ly viable, walled off from the rest of the
nation and propped up by Communist
maln force.
The democratic hopes of the German
people, and of their neighbors, are embodied ln the Federal Republic. It is this
nation - not the Communist regime that bas accepted the responsibility for
the crimes of the Nazis. The arm' agree·
ment with Israel reflected this national
policy of making amends, In so far as is
possible, for what Hitler did to the Jews.
East Germany, on the other hand, Is a
direct descendant of the totalitarian, an·
ti·Semitic Germany of Hitler, perp~tuat·
ed under the guardianship of its Russian
masters. East Germany has paid not one
cent ln restitution to the Jews nor re·
turned any confiscated property.
It Is only natural that Egypt, tradl·
t!onally sympathetic to the fascists and
employer of Nazi missile scientists,
should move toward closer ties with what
ill essentially an extension uf the Nazi

r.Jime.
Now West Germany has dared to
threaten to recognize Israel. The Arabs

Several frightened members

Taylor joins a Dult~n slreot crow for ditch-digging OKporlence.

W

HEN AN ACTOR is "oft catnera,'' he• may sometimes work

harder than when he's on. While on location in Dublin,
actor Rod Taylor speb,t many free hour~t preparin1.lor his portrayal of famed Irish playwright Sean O'Casey. He spent hours
of punch-pulling pracllce before going into a riot scene in the
film. He also learned to 11 call a spade a spade" by digging
ditches. This "practice" had its more relaxing moments--as
when Taylor took his diiector's suggestion to learn "how to hold
bia beer in the Irish way," Taylor got high marks for that test.
