We would not ouggest the steps tak·
en like In Enaland where there Is a reported movement to pass Parliamentary
legislation making incitement to racial
and religious hatred a criminal offense.
Too often we rush madly around to get a
: law pwed to do this or that, and as ev·
eryone knows there are laws against mur·
· der and other serious crimes, but they
atlll continue to be committed. A law
m1ght be one of the possibilities being
considered by the Justice Department
and Congress, and If some teeth are
: needed It might be argued that this Ia
. the only aolutlon.
One of the best ways to combat the
. rise of hate organizations is to boldly
· point out their activities as being direct·
ly opposed to the principle& upon which
our democracy is founded. It is a prob' fern we have to face and there !a no use
.. to stick our heads In the ground and
. hope lt will fade away. Aa individual cit·
C:lzens we should shame those, many of
:o whom profess to be Christians or at
· least religious against the practices of
hate. We have too good a start In our
. communities In the relations of races, rellglons llld nationality to ever let the
· hooded ones come to the surface and ex·
ert any Influence on the community u
a whole. Some penons might say that
; there are other secret organizations Uke
' lodges, but their arguments do not stand
, up. A person wanting to know about a
: certain lodge can go to our library and
=read a description of Its rites, and we be: lleve that all such organizations have on
· !Ue In the Ubrary of Congreu a detailed
• report of their alms and objectives,
<which are above reproach. A person who
• hatea tries to hide behind a sheet, and
: deep down in their hearts are ashamed
to admit to their prejudice.

We Imagine that we will never be
able to eliminate all hatred from the

have seen a great Improvement In under·

In a large measure the teachings In

It is just too bad that a lady had to lose
her life due to the Inflamed hatred that
has been Inculcated into the hearts of
persons who belong to such organiza·
lions u the Klan, and It Is not alone in
that field . The very nature of the dan
makes It abhorent to any thinking peraon. It thrives on darkness and secrecy,

wears hoods places them In the ranks of
the enemies of civilization.
