FIGHT to uve University School at
Ohio State University is beginning to
attract attention of educators and others
Interested in the improvement of Ohio
education in increasing numbers. A
group of dedicated persons in the Colum·

bus area, who are more directly concern-

The committee of 14 included in the
study a reexamination of the cen~er. o.f
school experimentation, and in tbeu 1m·
tlal recommendation was the idea of enlarginll the research facilities, even to
the potnt of building a new school. However the committee took a vote wh1rh
was 10 to 4 in favor of doing away with
Universitv School, and that decision was
announced last April, while the director
of the school was on leave. The minority
group in the study argues that a stable
student body constantly under expenmental conditions would provtde a better laboratory for educational experimentation than would randomly selected public school classes. On top of the mmonty
report was the overwhelming vote of,~~~
university teacht>r trammg faculty b~ ~·~
to 6 against closing the school. and Instructors in the school sent a report to
Dean Cottrell pointing out that the major blame in any supposed {allure of the
school to achieve \ts goals re sted With
the College of Education.
It was at that time tho! a group of
484 persons formed a group to save the
school under the name of Save University School Committee, which included
faculty members. parents, alumni and
prominent educators throughout the
country. Results of its action has thus
far saved a part of the school. but the
fight is continuing to retam the ent1re
school, and among the proposals _is to
retain the entire school for a penod of
three vears to see how it fits into the reorganization plans of the college. The
suggestion seems reasonable, as 11 would_
only mean a sum of $250,000 a year to
keep the seven through 12th grades operating, out of the total budget of the
university, which is over $68 million.

The University School Is not a private
school in any sense of the word, and its
student body is composed of students of
all races, religions, and economic status
to give it a clear cut cross section of any
Ohio community. The money spent on research through its activities can do much
more satisfactorily than it could 1f 1!
were distributed ·to selected schools in
the public system throughout the . ~tate.
Its central location makes tis fac1httes
easily accessible to all educators of the
state. We think that the university and
the state would lose respect in the field
of education in the country if the plan to
curb Its activities are carried out. The
school has a reputation nationally, and
surely a great state cannot let such a
palrey sum stand between the position it
now holds by closing this school down
in any degree. We know it is private contributions, but surely a great umverstty
Uke Ohio State. which is building a
$350,000 home for its president, owes it
to Ohio to keep this school which has
made great contributions in the field of
experimental education. -DCW

But, while holding out the pos
sibility of massive:economic eid,
Johnson also firmly declared
t.bat the Untied States "will not
be defeated . . . will not grow
tired . . . will not withdraw"

in the face or the Communist
goal of " total conquest" of em
battled South Viet Nam.
Remarks Drew Criliclsm
His remarks drew criticism
from
• Senate Republican Leader

Everett M. Dirksen, Ill ., who
asked in a statement : " Do you
buy ·reedom for a humble peo-

ple with a biiJion - dollar package I doubt it , and I doubt
also that we can preserve face
and prestige with such an ap

proach.
" What a tragedy it would be
Jf our actions now should be in
terpreted as meaning that the
Viet Cong would humble us into
makh J a bmion-dollar offer in
order to call it quits when freedom is on the altar."
On the other side, Senate
Democratic Leader Mike Mans·
field, Mont. , said the speech

was "a profoundly moving and
constructive statement which
reveals both the great strength
of President Johnson 's resolve
and his deep concern for the

welfare of au people. "
Administration officials said

Johnson's proposed Southeast
Asia development pt.an was not
directly tied to a solution m
Viet Nam because the President wanted to ~:et the program
moving as qUickly as possible.
~ks Quick Peace
As for the prospef:ts of peace,
JohnSOll said he hoped it would
come swiftly-'~ but that Js in the
hands of others besides our

selves."
Then, In a major shift of the
I' S. attitude toward negotiations, he said :
·'There may be many ways to
this kind of peace: In discussion or r . ~otiation wit.. the gov·
ernments concerned ; in large
groups or in small ones; in the
reaffirmation of old agreements
or their strengthening with new

ones.
" We have stated this position
over and over again fifty times
-cmd more-to friend and foe
alike. And we remain ready with this purpose - for unconditional discussions ."

The phrase "unconditional
discussions " was a departure
from the President's previously.
stated policy that there could
be no talks-t!ven on arranging
negotiations - until the North
Vietnamese "stop doing what
they are doing" to neighboring
South Viet Nam.

tone of t.be U.S. attitude toward

has brought many demands
