vast amount of litter that II dropped on any ~mmunity Ia statl•ring,

many people can be trained to uae aome
good judgement in its disposal. Many
times we have written concerning this
problem, but it continues to plague the
<om munit y. Sometime ago several tnsh
containers were placed In the business
sections, and they have helped to a degree, but to be really effoctlve they need

the area to give us a reputation of being
a clean community. The practices that
most persons follow, if this were a large
city would brinl out complete chaoa to
any city department that would try lo
cope with the situation . If local residenta

litter would get way beyond even the rtmottst possibility of solution.

We should consider the total blll to

The state or Ohio makes It easy for
the motorist to avoid being laheled with

which are availaale wit bout charge . They
will also send them to organizations. who

beautiful. There is a state law that asse"es 1 fine of S50 for deliberate littering
of t he public highways. Most rities have
laws of that nature, but we seldom heor
of anyone being arrested as a litterbug.
We would say that our community was

By William S. White
' . WAlliNGTON -

Our state highway department Ia
starting out on Ita campaign to clean up
the litter of thoughtless litterbugs, who
all winter long have been tossing things
out the windows of their cars to marr
t he beauty of Ohio. They will have crews
•p•nding months collecting papers, bot·
ties and other refuse that they have scattered along every road in every eounty.
11 is nothing less than amazin~ what the
, ust of thi s cleanup will be. It is known
t hat the cost of last year's state highway
rleanup was $541 .787 . The figure that it
cost the taxpayers of Ohio in 1953 wu
$621.733, and one of the lowest years in
recent history was $269.787 in 19M. It
would be interesting to know just why
there was that variance in those particular years. We doubt that any campaign
had much to do with It . It could be the
weather, that kept the window• closed,
or drtvers from the hi&hways.
