Free Economy
THERg is not much thought given by
the average Cllilen in connectwn
with the great benefi ts we have from
the services of the utilities that service
our community. Recently we noted a
section of our city st.reets torn up .,..
preparation for the resurfacing of First
Ave., and other areas of downtown Gallipolis, and since it was gas compan5 it
gave us a trend of thought in the direc·
lion of that utility. A great change has
taken place in the minds of many peop·
le in regard to the place of the utilities
in a community. The time was when the
word utilitv was a dirty word . They were
pictured a~ exploiters of the public. and
many people were ready to fight at the
mention of the name. That is all changed now, and how it came about is an in·
teresting story.

~

.'

This Is just another example of what
one great private enterprise has done to
help you and I have man y new thm gs ill "
addition to having a comfortable home
when the cold winds of winter sweep
around us. We are a people tod ay who
bless a utility that made many things
possible for us at a reaso nable cost, and
we have the evidence at hand that they
are continually tryin g in every way possible LO''ii!Jprove service still fu rth er.
They have ehanged that image of the
early day to one of trust and confidence
on the part of the public. ann thev h;l\e

The development of th is industrv has
largely taken place since World War II ,
with the development of thin-walled p1pe

ties. It shows wbal an investor-o11 ned
enterprise, with a chance to earn a pro·
fit in 1 competitive market can rio. It IS
another example of how a util ity with
the idea of service can get things nnne
to meet the ever increasing needs of the
public. It is staggering to the Jmagma·

than 700,000 miles of ~l pelille linkillg
