We get most of our reminders with the ap· proach of a long holiday weekend like the one that will open at 9 p m. Friday and continue over the Fourth of July to Monday at midnight. One doubts very much if there would be much heed to warmngs it they were plaeed before the Amencan people each week ot the year. Last year in this country there were 53. l million persons injured for the worst year m the history o! our countrv. That staggering figure was L3 milhon more than 1he year 1963, and at the present rate in !965 we will chalk up still an· other record high. There are those who shrug the facts off with a simple explan· ation that the figure Is bound to rise be· cause of the increased populatlon, but that very fact proves the need for better safetly education in every facet of Am· erican life There were 104,000 kl\led last year in accidents with half ol them being in automobile mishaps. The only place wheere the incidence of accidents showed improvement in !964 was in the number of home accidents The home is continuous, howev· er, to be the scene of the most accidents. Last year there were 22.6 million injur· ed there. but that figure is 900.000 few· er than in 1963. Injuries at work jump· ed by 300.000 over the 1963 figure , and in part can be laid to the increased employment in many of the building trades. In 1964 eight million persons wore injured at their plates of employment. but that is below the peak vear of 1960 when 8 7 mil !Jon were hurt at work It might be interesting to many readers lo learn that the accident rate in our country pn 100 person~ IS now standing at ~8 4, or over one fourth, which is a rise from the 1959 figure of 24.9. A week does not pass hy in our community without personal injury to a number of persons. That person mtght be you, but many persons never stop to thmk of the dangers of modern livmg. In that regard we are rather lucky be(·ause the number ot traffic acddents is on the upgrade anrl w1ll rnntinue to rise. At the prpsent time, with one half of 1965 gone we are anproachm~ a high mark in artidents investigated by local polk~ . We believe that it is time that we stan using our intelligence and pay stnct attention to all the rules of safetv both at home, work and on the streeis and highways. Some of the rules that need to be carefully observed in all cate· gories is that of speed . If we go about our tasks and driv ing at the safe speed many, or most would be avoided . One gets in a hurrv to go down a stair and a fall results. There is nothing to be gained by trying to do somethmg in a hurry. I! you are off in your car for an appointment there is no need to break , all tht speed laws in getting there, and it Is better to be safe than sorrv.
