"Safety? Why We Even Have -Seat Belts
For the Guy in the Bock!"

THE burnins question today in all parts
'

of America Is how fast and how far
the people want the federal government
to £()? Every once in a while we bear a
few voices being raised in the wilder·
ness against the encroachment, and with
each passing month they will increase
still further . One of those raised in our
Immediate area is concerned with a
statement made by one of the brain
trusters in Washington. It is to the ef·
feet that most of the money of the Ap·
palachian program be spent in the ur·
ban centers of the area, with the belief
that the whole section will benefit from
auch an expenditure. There is growing
evidence that there is not going to be
any wide distribution of money in areas
of the so called depressed . This means
that the largely agriculture counties will
be forgotten with possibly the exception
of schools.
There is bound to be confusion with

tntu ,,....t social plans being introduced
while tn• government operates m a deficit cycle They are bringing about new
agencies and expansion of others, wh1ch
is just adding to the already ponderous,
blundering wasteful and inefficient federal bureaucracy . We are mostly agreed
that better health and better education
are essential in bringmg about the great
society, but we see no need for our country to become a welfare state in order to
arrive at the projected goal. That is the
issue that we all face, and if some brakes
are not applied the goal will not be ach·
ieved. and there ts a great possibility that
we will be spent into total destruction,
with our enemtes takmg over witll1lltt firing a shot
One of ltte 1rays we are being misled
Is through the tax reductiOns , that must
ol the citizenry weleome and cheer mad·
ly. We are toid that we will now have
more money to spc·nd which will g1ve
the entire economy a shot m the arm.
'!'here is now growtng evidence that the
relaxing of the tax hite hy the lederal
authorities is gtvi ng the co me on to the
state and loca l taxing agencies to increase taxes at that level Ri ght here n
Ohio according to the latest ligures 66
cities and 21 villages collected tncome
taxes of around $94 million in 1964 , <md
those taxes amounted lo an increase durIng the past year of 9 2 pen ·onl ot over

Is an old story that every time th rre is a

We who are on the short end of
erants lly the government might get !he
notion that we will be immune from government regulation . One ol the first piares that it will probably raise tls ugly
head will be in the money that will go
to schools under the new program for
educational assistance When and tf we
have to expand our presl'nt school plant
is when th e government wt ll come into
the picture We wi ll be told what we ca n
build, and how it will be built, and the
day will come when every move made bv
educators wtll have to be cleared
through the hi gher authorities in Washington We will also find out whrn 1t ts
too late what the medicare will do tor
the medical profession and for those
who use its services. It will come to everyone. accordin g to predictions in a n

TRAITOR OR SQUARE?
Dear Helen:
I am a guy with a problem.
Here are the details:
One of my friends, a year old·
er than me (17) doesn't like
gail and thinks dating ia for
dopes, with more money than
brains. The other pal, my age,
really digs the opposite aex,
and has already dated several
glril.
Now my problem:
I really like this chick but am
afraid ·10 ask her out, thinking
that II I do, one buddy will
think me a traitor. But on the
other hand, if I don't, the oth·
er will tblnk me a square.
Man, does this bombshell get
me bugged! Wbat should I doj
-TWO MANY FRIENDS ...
Dear TMF:
If you really like the gal be a traitor - and dale 'er.-H.
Dear Helen :
There was a lot of talk about
kids' reactions to braces. but
I have a different problem . I'm

teeCil you ever saw. I've been
tryillll desperately for years to
talk my folks into getting brac·

BRACES
Dear N.B.:
If a dentist can't convince
your folks, I won't have much
luck long distance, but at least
I'll go down trying.
So they think it is 'sinful to
alter the appearance in any
way," then bow do they recon·
cite getting hair cuts, shavlng - even wearing clothes?
Certainly these "extras" alter
the appearance!
Buck Ieeth can not only ruin
a girl's looks, but an improper

bite may cause a health problem. This can be a crlpplin&
defect mentally and physically;
and whether I tread on any religious principles or not, I've
got to say I think it Is as sinful

a club foot go untended. Would
your parents turn their backs
here too?-H.
Old Old Stery
Oh Hele11:
I'm so confused. I met him
about a month ago, and I guess
I made a good impression because he called me twice that
week. Then we had a date )my
first) and afterwards he called
me to tell me how much he
liked me. He said be loved and
missed me and I told him the
same.
It is now three weeks later
and I haven't beard from him
since. We are both very youna
but I feel he meant what he
said. 'Tisn't right, just •ilsn'f

MISS BLUE8
Dear Little Miss:
'Tisn't right, but It's life, honey, so shrug, smile and be glad
you learned early that boya
don't always mean what they
say - a day later, anyway,
when they gel to thinkln8 how
fast you snapped them up on
lt.
And don't think you're the only one : almost every girl (and
every boy too) gets ditched at
least once in the dating game.
You can't win'em all. -H.
Dear Helen :
This boy is always nice and
friendly but my lrlends tell me
he's bad. They can't tell me
why - they just say "Oh, I've
heard ...... " Don't you think I
sboold find out for myself? Just
to be honest , I do know he Isn't
the best of boys, but nobody's
perfect. -HOPING
Dear HoPing:
By all means, lind oul lor
yourself - BEFORE you date
him. Afterwards might be
too late! -H.
