The New Education
A PRONOUNCEMENT by the National
Education Association is one that
points up the signs ot the times . It com·
ments are to the effect that this year's
White House conference marked the
end of an era, in that there was nothing
to gel excited about in the way of heal·
ed debates in the realm of education.
Apparently the feeling is that now with
the (ederal Investment ot money in the
nation's educational program has to an
utent solved all of the more pressing
.problems. There seems to be a feeling
that with massive sums of money the
educational forces of the country will
be able to play Its part in bringing
about the great society that formerly
touched off debates in the national ol'
eanization.
The main concern now will be ed U·
cational reforms and changes in ap·
proach to the problem at hand , which
will mean that there will have to be
many innovatlona all along the Une to
streamline the schools for the task of
giving every child an equal opportunity.
There was one statement coming forth
from fhe association to the effect that
relatively no one outside the ranks of
professional educators thought of edu·
cation as a burning national issue. If
memory serves me correctly the role of
education has been in the thinking of
responsible persons for a long tim• in
the history of this country. Most w11l
agree that for a long time the three
~realest influences in the lives of Americans have been first the family. then
the school and finallv the church Thev
haVe always been COnsidered fhP bill·
wark of the American wnv of life. and
we never knew that Pdurr1finn war.: €'\'er

Television In Review
By ROBERT MUSEL
United Press International
NEW YORK <UPIJ - Behind
the resignalion of Sir Alec
Douglas-Home as leader of Brit·
ain 's Tory party last week is
the story of a distinguished
career all but ruined by television. It is 8 tate that may
well chill the marrow of aspiring politif'ians everywhere.

The tax monies that residents of
this county pay in the largest amount
goes to education . Granted that it does
not pay the bigger share of the tot.l expense of the schools, because that IS
through slate channels In our book that
is ample evidence that ali of us recog·
nize the importance ol education for
the future of our vouth and the country.
The additional federal munies will be tn
a large part directed to assist in the
war on poverty to eliminate the slum
schools and those of sub standard qualltv that in some instances have been the
ult of segregation. One of the state·
rr >ts made by Hubert Humphrey in regard to this ooproach to education and
the part that t plays seem rather rarlical He stated. "That any nation that
believes in justice must see that those on
the hottom receive more than those on
top " He added that schools can rescue
millions of children. making 8 new pat~ern for them of "self esteem, self respect, ambition and responsibility."

re

The blg question is as to whether
the task facing educators can be met It
calls for courage and flexibility, with a
large measure of imagination to innovate to accomplish the high sounding
goals that are supposed to he met
through the large federal outla.v First
and foremost as in any ion~ estahlished
11rganlzation is to face the fact that old
ways of doing things are not good enough, but to ~lve up those old ways will
be very painful, and will involve a lot
of trial and error, which will arld furth er to the expense of education. We have
been trying for a long time to instill
ambition into people, and it will be in.

Dear Helen:
We went on a trtp recently
and I want to register a protest
against those gruesome signs
along the highway. I don't mean
advertisements - they're kind
of fun to read - but those big
bill boards that show things like
two cars craahtng together and
two skeletons hanging out, with
a caption, "Don't play 'rushin&

of them to 25 miles of o~

Dear Belen:
Here's
another whyohwhy.
Pray tell me why my wife
leaves lights on all over the
house - except lu the room
where she's working or reading,
where she struggles along, till
it's ball dark before she flips
the switch? -JIM
Dear Jim:
