There are names for almon every type of winning
play, whUe b8d plays In gen·
er&l are nameless. Ills IIlii
as wen. Who would Uke to be
lmrilortallzed by having the
play of trumping your part.
ner's ace named after him l
Today's play Is known
among the old-lime bridge
experfs aa the "No-betterplace-for-It" play. In one
Iorin or anOther, It Is fairly
common and, whUe not al·
ways a loser, It's very sel·
dom a winner.
This hand was played In a
high-stakes rubber bridge
game at the Cavendish Club
almost 40 years ago and the
player who chucked away
came and rubber gave the
play Its name right then and
there
Ea~ started the bidding
off with three hearts and
South made the fairly conservative caD of three
spades. North raised to game
and West opened his singleEast took the ace and king
of hearts and continued with
the queen. South wun't at
aU happy about this. In fact,
he had quietly decided that
things were taking a nasty
tum for lbe worse. He'could
find nothing bei!M to .do than
to ruff wfth his queen of
trumps. All West had to do
was to discard, but West
wun't goln g to let that
queen get away. He planked
down Ills ldng, remarking,
"No better place for It," and
·the .play was named.
That was lbe third Irick
for the defense, but South
wrapped up the rest of the
tricks In no seconds flat: lf
West had just let that Irick
go, he would have been re·
warded .with two tricks later
on but, llien, the play would
have no name.
