WE have never heard an accusation ol
police brutaUty, such as those that
are tloating all over the <'OUntry. Back
in the days when we wert braw·
ling river towns, there was indtcations
possibl,? ol this practice. One character,
by the name of Jesse James, not the
bank robber who claimed to have been
arrested mo;e than any other individual
In the annals of a nearby county was
beaten in to unconsctousneSI before he
coulcl be wheeled off to the jail. Today
tbere ia not that reo!stance to arrest, and
today we have observed no abuse of authority which is most deeply resented by
the areat majority of Americans. Our
country was founded on the b~slo of
protectinc citizens against tyranmcal authority and we see ample evidence of
local o~orcement ollicen livin& up to
tbal lliib tradition.

In paris of tho country the cry ol po·
U<t brutality is making the rounds, and
It il rather frightening thai it is mainly
diroctod against polico rather than the
rlolen. Inquiries 10 the order of the day
in many trouble spots, and most of tho
research Ia proving that civilian brutal·
tty il being practiced again&! the police
and in riot& like Los Angeles, when po·
tict were only attempting to arrest a
man for drunken driving, it was used as

HELEN HELP US!

an excuse to justify looting, arson and
varied types of mayhem. We do not
doubt that there have been cases of bru-

tality because

of certain

situations,

where a timid approach might have
brought harm to the law offkers. The

resisting of arrest in any situation shows
alack of respect for the laws of our land,
and those who practice it deserve to a
('ertain extent rough treatment.
Many government leaders in Congress and out have slated publicly that
there are too many loose charges of pol:ce brutality. They are justified in such
statements because they know that if
the respect for the laws of our land continue there will be anarchy. It is inter·
esting to note the false charges of brutality. A son of a southern woman was
reported to havt been abused for steal·
ing a bag of peanuts. It turned out that
he stole a large sark from a trurk, and
was also charged with the theft of the
truck. Another woman laid down in the
street to re&ist arrest. and charged that
poliee did not pick h•r ::p gracefully to
cart her off to the van that was to Uike
ber to jaiL

'\

The ftrst thing that .!enters the
minds of those out to un<fer mine law
and order is to shout brutaUty. They
even go so far as to charge verbal brutality when they accuse officers of using rough language. Prior to the riots at
Berkle), Calif , a police brutality committee otarted to !urn out propaganda
before tbe riot took place in order to
gain sympathy for their cause . It is a
known fact that police dread the moment when the word brutality arises. It
robs him of his dignity, and is far from
the things that he wholeheartedly believes. The job of a policeman is dangerous to a degree, and is being made
more so by these loose an·usatlons . Out of 170U complaints of the
jlraetiee of brutality only five led to convictions. There were IB,Ir, polite officers assaulted in 1~4. with over 7,000
injured. Titis is ~ percentage ?f one out
of every ten policemen. and 1f a halt i1
not called in the trend to show disrespect lor the law the figures will mount.
They are our first line of defense. and
we should make certain thai thev are
upheld in theii fight against er:me and
disorder.

DOES MOTHER «NOW BEST?
Dear Hele11:
I am 17. A rt>w month• ago I
atartf'd dating a mao who is 37
and has been divorced twice.
Actually he was a friend of the
family but now he is getting
very serious. My father and

e~

pecially my mother invite him
to our house and think I ohould
go out with him. Sometimes J
wonder what kind of parent•
would aUow this Bituation. At
tint I thought I waB real big,
da!tng an older man, but now
my friends tease me and call
him my "daddy." or my moth·
er's boyfriend. He is always
around and wnn·t give me a
ehance to go out wilh anyone
else.
J am beginning to think my
mother wanta me to marry him,
just so she'll keep him around.
Another reason I don't like him
is lle makes bimself•Jook silly
by trying to ad younger than
he is. I've! told my folks, and
rve told him, but they think !'!!
"see 1M lighl" before long.
What else can I do? -J V,
Dear J.:
Tell them again, and again,
