Bearded, Unwashed Astronauts Plop Down
Nearly 14 Days After Blastoff at Cape
SPACE CENTER, Houston (UPI)- Space champions Frank Borman and James
Lovell came home for Chrstmas aboard Gemini 7 today with a splashdown in the
Atlantic at lhe end of their two-week space marathon.
Bearded, unwashed and "sort of cruddy," the space endurance champions J:llopped down at 9:06 a.m. EST exactly 13 days, 18 hours and 3~ minutes after lrftoff
from Cape Kennedy on Dec. 4. They brought home to the Umted States every space
endurance record in the book. Retro-rockets firell automatically at 8:28 a.m. EST
181 miles high over the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific and the astronauts began a
fiery descent into earth's atmosphere. It was the end of their 206th orbit.
They stepped aboard the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Wasp, walking a little
stiff-legged after 13 days, 18 hours and 3 6 minutes cooped up in the cnfines of their
small space capsule. But they were smiling and happy. Bearded and "sort of cruddy,"
the men who captured every spaceflight endurance recOTd n the book walked down
a red carpet smiling, waving and patting each other on the back.
Live television from the carrier, beamed to the United States via- the early bird
sateilite. let millions of Americans watch the arrival of the two space aces on the
carrier. The spacecraft, partially guided by the astronauts, undershot the target area
in the Atlantic south of Bermuda by anywhere from 8 to 17 mile . Radar showed it
