-- APlace For Moderates

THERE appears to

be a growing concern in thls country about its being
. aptured by those who can be classed as
. utremiats. Many writers in national publications are calling our attention to the
fact that what we need is cool heads for
the months and years that lie ahead in
aolving some of our more pressing problems. What most of them say is that we
need moderation to achieve some of the
llO&is that are now within sight. It 14 a
most difficult thing to pin down because
those who are extremists would be the
last to admit that they are of that c ult.
They are very much in the same boat as
an alcoholic, who is almost the last to
face up to the situation that he or slle
finds tllemselves in.
We find tile extremist in all walks of
life. They are found in politics, religio n,
business. labor and yes even in the professions. This nation was found by mod·
orates, and tllat very fact is the basis lor
our greatness. It has all the earmarks of
responsibility. We do not know how you
would ~efine an extremist, but we
. would place as the primary attribute an
Immaturity, or an unwlltingness to see
that if tlley triumph they will do more
barm than good. One of the problems we
now face is that as moderates we have a
tendency to keep silence In the face of
a real threat to our nation through the
alarming Increase In e•tremism.
