Your main purpose is to bring God glory

Joyful in Christ
Do you ever just take a moment to thank
God for your salvation?
We tend to forget the magnitude of God’s
work in our lives. But we rarely forget
about our cares in this world. It’s hard for
us to go a single day without considering
how we might satisfy our fleshly desires.
Why? Because we love this world.
John writes, “Do not love the world or
the things in the world. If anyone loves the
world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world—the desires of
the flesh and the desires of
the eyes and pride of life—is
not from the Father but is
from the world. And the world
is passing away along with its
desires, but whoever does the
will of God abides forever” (1
Jn. 2:15-17 ESV).
Cross
We can enjoy our lives in
Words this
world without being tied
Isaiah
to
this
world. In other words,
Pauley
there’s nothing wrong with
enjoying a good meal, embracing someone you love, or welcoming the
cool, crisp Fall air!
God has given us life to enjoy. But the
things of this world cannot truly satisfy our
deepest cravings. The real source of our joy
comes from Christ alone.
Sometimes I wonder if one day—like a
million years from now—I’ll reflect on my
short life lived in this world. If I’m going to
dwell in the presence of Christ for eternity,
why cling so tightly to this life?
Even still, I worry and fret each day
about the things I can’t control. I try to find
my security in the things of this world rather than the gospel. And I neglect to trust in
God as I should.
I don’t know about you, but I often need
to be reminded of just how good and satisfying Jesus Christ is. I need to be reminded
of God’s sovereignty and care. If He can
provide for birds, then surely He can provide for me (see Mt. 6:26). If Peter’s audience can “rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Pt. 1:8), then
so can I. And so can you.
I encourage you to take a moment to
thank God for your salvation. And do it
often. Make a practice of showing that
thanksgiving in and through your life. This
world is passing away. But in Christ, we
live eternally.
“Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus
the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built
up in him and established in the faith, just
as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving” (Col. 2:6-7 ESV).
I’m reminded of a well-known hymn by
Edward Mote called “The Solid Rock.” He
writes, “My hope is built on nothing less /
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; / I dare
not trust the sweetest frame, / But wholly
lean on Jesus’ name. / On Christ, the solid
Rock, I stand; / All other ground is sinking
sand, / All other ground is sinking sand.”
Since your salvation is sure, you can be
joyful in Christ rather than getting caughtup in the things of this world.

honor and glory. It involves nothing
less than that. Very few live it. Most
do not.
Apostle Paul clarified it when he
wrote, “What ever you do, do all
for the glory of God.” Furthermore,
“Unto Him be glory in the Church.”
We are supposed to be “filled with
the fruits of righteousness unto the
glory and praise of God.”
I the Church correctly understands
and embraces this spiritual ideal,
then the life we live has an extreme
value placed on it that super-cedes
any other value in life we may want
to have. This being altogether true,
we are confronted with the question: how shall we bring God honor
and glory?
The Biblical principles of it loom
directly before us. It involves specifically living the tenets of changed
life in Jesus Christ. We should live
out in obedient fashion the basics
of the Gospel verified by the death,
burial, and resurrection of Jesus
Christ. The resurrection of Jesus
Christ is fundamentally central to
what is the Gospel due to its proving the regenerative work of God.
If we do not live out the expectations of changed life in Christ that
brings God honor and glory, then
we just become a type of fish bait
dangling on the hooks of worldly
affairs.
“How do you keep from being
caught for fish bait?” Slim asked.
“Do not look long at the light. As
a matter of fact, you see the light
coming up behind you…?”

Rio women, Gray Wolves battle to 1-1 draw
By Randy Payton

Rio Grande’s Isabel Ruff was responsible for the RedStorm’s lone goal in
Wednesday afternoon’s 1-1 tie with Lourdes University at Herrnstein Field in
Chillicothe, Ohio.

this weekend

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio —
The University of Rio Grande
coughed up an early lead,
but held on to record a 1-1
tie with Lourdes University,
Wednesday afternoon, in nonconference women’s soccer
action at Chillicothe High
School’s Herrnstein Field.
The RedStorm saw their
record go to 0-1-1 as a result
of the deadlock.
The Gray Wolves were playing in their season opener.
Rio Grande grabbed a 1-0
advantage just 20 seconds
into the contest when freshman Isabel Ruff (Lancaster,

OH) fired a shot from the
upper left corner of the
18-yard box — after a touch
by fellow frosh Kotomi
Kaneshima (Himeji, Japan) —
past Lourdes’ goal keeper Lily
Yoder.
The Gray Wolves netted the
equalizer just under 12-1/2
minutes later when Abigail
Mann let go of a shot from the
left wing, which just eluded
the hands of Rio sophomore
net-minder Morgen Nutter
(Ashville, OH) and found its
way into the net.
And that’s how things
stayed the rest of the way.
Lourdes finished with a
13-10 edge in shots overall,
although Rio Grande had

four of the six shots in the
overtime periods — including
all three in the second extra
session. Both teams had five
shots on goal.
Yoder did not record a save
in her 45 minutes of action for
the Gray Wolves. Emmy Rodger had four stops after taking
over in goal at halftime.
Nutter had four saves for
the RedStorm.
Rio Grande is scheduled to
return to action on Saturday
when it hosts the University
of Northwestern Ohio for a 5
p.m. kickoff at Evan E. Davis
Field.

Director at the University of Rio Grande.

PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEWS

Ohio State started its 2021 campaign on Thursday night, and a good portion of the Ohio Valley
Publishing area will be tuned in this weekend as
Ohio, Marshall and West Virginia all begin their
fall gridiron campaigns.
The Bobcats begin the post-Frank Solich era on
Saturday night against the Orange of Syracuse,
and Ohio is the only home team of the three local
programs this weekend.
The Thundering Herd begin their post-Doc Holliday era against the Midshipmen of Navy, while
the Mountaineers open their third season under
Neal Brown in Maryland against the Terrapins.
Here’s a brief look at each of the season opening
matchups.
Syracuse at Ohio
The Ohio University football team open its season at 7 p.m. Saturday at Peden Stadium against
the Syracuse Orange.
The Bobcats are 0-2 all-time against the Orange,
with their last meeting taking place in 1921.
The Bobcats only played three games in the
2020 season, all in MAC play, going 2-1.
Some top returners include senior running back
De’Montre Tuggle and senior safety Jarren Hampton.
The Bobcats will also be headed by first-year
head coach Tim Albin, who has been with the program since 2005.
Albin takes over from 16-year head coach Frank
Solich, who retired prior to the 2021 season to
focus on his health.
Marshall at Navy
The Marshall Thundering Herd opens their
2021 campaign at 3:30 p.m. Saturday with a road
game against the Navy Midshipmen.
This will be the first meeting of the two programs.
The Herd’s 2020 season started off in a promising way, jetting out to a 7-0 record, including a
17-7 victory against No. 23 Appalachian State, but
dropped the last three games of the season, including the Conference USA championship against the
UAB Blazers and the Camellia Bowl to the Buffalo
Bulls to finish with a 7-3 record.
Marshall also rose up to the No. 16 rank in the
AP Poll and No. 21 in the College Football Rankings during the 2020 season.
Top returners to the Green and White include
redshirt freshman quarterback Grant Wells and
junior cornerback Steven Gilmore.
After the resignation of 11-year head coach Doc
Holliday, the Herd will now be led by Charles
Huff, who spent the last two football seasons as an
assistant coach at the University of Alabama.

Meigs Marauders (1-1)
A late addition to the
docket, but Meigs will
have a game this weekend
after all after Coal Grove
had to cancel due to
COVID quarantine. It will
be the first-ever meeting
between Meigs and River
View, which is based
out of Bradshaw, W.Va.
The Raiders dropped a
40-0 decision to Mount
View last week and was
originally scheduled to
face Grundy (Va.) this
week. The Marauders are
coming off a school-record
effort for points after last
week’s 81-36 win over Belpre. Meigs is unbeaten at
home this year and is averaging 50 points per game
while also allowing 29
points per contest. Kickoff
is slated for 7 p.m.

Wednesday evening in a Tri-Valley
Conference matchup.
The Lady Tornadoes (2-1) quickly
jumped to a lead in set one, including
Brooke Crisp notching six consecutive service points — including one
ace. The Lady Rockets led only once
during the opening set.
The visitors bounced back in set
two, rocketing ahead to a 9-2 lead.
The Lady Rockets maintained their
lead until the closing serves, when the
Lady Tornadoes went ahead 24-23.
With both teams trading points, it
forced the second set into extra serves.
Both teams had chances to win the
game, but the Purple and Gold came
out victorious after breaking a 34-all tie
with two straight points.
Like set one, the Lady Rockets led
only once in the finale. SHS broke out
to a 10-4 lead and never trailed again.
Libero Jocelyn Northup led the
Lady Tornadoes in aces with two.
