:Help That Comes From God
By Roy 1.. Smith

·

No man's case is lost as long as he is gettmg help from God 1
The story of the Apostle Paul, as 1t appears in the New Tt• s.
tament, is full of ups and downs altho ugh th e downs seem to
be In the majority. But when th e aj!ed preacher stood, fmall v,
in the presence of his Roman )Udge. he dedared that up to
that moment he had had ''the help that comes from God·
Abraham Lincoln put tbe case well one day when he sa id
to a committee that had come to ca ll on him . urging • day of
prayer during which, they would ask God to be on thetr side .
" I am not greatly concerned as to whether or not God Is on
my sid8. But 1 want verv much to know that I am on his side."
God Doe• llelp
Lei'• put this down as one of the fixed facts of life r.od
does help lhooe who ore rlgbt!
The sales manager of a big industry was in conversatio n
one day with a preacher who happened to be hts personal
friend . "I wish I had what you have," the business man said
"Wilen you go to talk to a man about his religiou s life. htS
good or his evil ways, there is s•Jmething down deep "ithtn
him which keeps s:>ying to him, "That preacher is right You
had better lfsten to bim." But when I try to talk to a cltent
about !COme of our merchandise, his mind is filled with the
arguments and the sales talk of mv competitor, and he is just
as apt to believe them as he Is to believe me ••

Nol Promised Success
The probabilities are that some of the young Pharisees "ho
were in Gamaliel's school, with Saul of Tarsus, may have come
together for a class reunion, years afterward. and may have
fallen into a reminiscent mood.
Some of them had played it safe. some of them had taken
advantage of various pulls and special privileges, and some
few of them may have fallen out along the way. Like ail old
grads there would have been among them the failures and the
successes. Finally, in the midst of one of the conversations.
someone may have asked, "Whatever became of that young
man Saul, of· Tarsus? I always thought he had a good mind ,
· anfl'·he ' certainly was willing td 'llork:· l haven't h~ard from
him in years."
1
To which mother might have replied, "Oh, he went off into
one of these cults. II was too bad The man he followed was
crucified like a common felon It seems a shame. too Saul
might have amounted to something, If he could have kept on
the track."
And about the same time Saul, now Paul, was saying, "I
have had the 'help that comes from God."
