· Help, Doo'tHinder Your Census Taker

•

Today, April 1, all

over Meigs County and

• _ the United States, census takers will begin
a long aJIIl grueling task of counting the peopie of our country.
•Y
Census takers will visit houses, huts, igloos,
and even bus stations in their efforts to obtalQ the knowledge that is secured by the
Federal ~overnment every 10 years.
••
IJaiit week forms were mailed to home own••
••• ers all over the states. These forms ask a
•••• gre~t variety of questions. Such as:
••
Wbo. ls the head of the household? This
•
could run JJI1o quite an argument between a
•
•
dispuiing husband and wife. The forms also
•
•• • ask a person's race and age, plus many other
• •
vital statistics.
•
•
A census taker can not disclose the know•.
ledge that he has secured. If he does he is
••
liable to a co•rt sentence.
•.
.On· the other hand, any person who ·Mives

•• •• falae 1J11Wers to a census taker is also liable
io a·court sentence.
•
Why should a person glve false answers to
•
a census taker? Actually he has no logical
•• ••' reason, as all information given is guaranteed
'
confidential treatment. The report cannot be
•
•
used for such purposes as taxation, lnvestlga.
tlon, or regulation.
•
As a cltlzen, one may ask why It Is neces••
sary to take a censua every 10 years?

It Is provided ln the Constitution, tbat the

census count w1ll be the determtnmg factor
m apportwrung the seats of congress. Census
taking wilt also help government and buSI·
ness to develop plans wh1ch may affeot Me1gs
County, as. well as other states ~nd counlles.
It could be a decisive factor 10 deterrruning When the Letart Bottoms will succumb to
mdustr.al development. This 1s only a theory
of course, but 11 could be a factor.
In one out of every four homes extra queslions will be asked. They are not on your
mailed blank. Not even th~ Census Taker
knows in wh1ch homes he Will ask the add•·
honal question. It m1ght be you , or Jt mtght
be. your neighbor, or even your nc1ghb01 s
ne1ghbor.
If your household has been chosen, the
Census Taker willlnform you.
This year's census taking has already been
tabbed as tieing the costliest of the 18 already
takell .
' lnitead of there being 48 states in which
to make the inquiries, there is now 50 after
the addition of Alaska and Hawaii. In Alaska
Census T•kers will be trudging from Igloo t.o
Igloo, while in Hawaii, others will be relaxed
amid Palm Trees.
. So this year help the Census Taker, don't
hinder him .
Think to yourself, "He just comes around
every 10 y•ars."
