Meigs Co.
Cleanup Day
announced
By Lorna Hart

lhart@civitasmedia.com

MEIGS COUNTY — The Meigs County Soil
and Water District received a grant from the Ohio
Environmental Protection Agency that will be
used for Meigs Clean-up Day.
Funding for the project will also be provided by
the SWCD, the Meigs County Health Department
and the Meigs County Commission.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. — or
until the dumpsters are full — May 2. Meigs County Fairgrounds, 41805 Fairgrounds Rd., Pomeroy,
is the drop-off site.
According to Meigs County Soil and Water Conservation District Administrator Steve Jenkins,
a grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection
Agency was received in 2014 and used for the first
Clean-up Day last September. So successful was
the response from residents to Clean-up Day, the
SWCD applied for a 2015 grant.
“After receiving the grant for the second year,
we plan to reapply next year,” he said.
Only Meigs residents are eligible to participate
and proof of residence is required, such as a current driver’s license or utility bill. There is no
charge for drop off. Industrial or commercial customer waste will be accepted.
Accepted household items include furniture, toys,
appliances, appliances with refrigerant removed by
a licensed technician with proof attached, mattresses and box springs and carpet. Tires are accepted
with a limit of 10 tires per vehicle and include passenger tires of 16 inches or less and semi tires. All
tires must be removed from their rims and no farm
tractor tires will be accepted.
Televisions, computers, servers, monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, printers, fax machines,
copiers, scanners, UPS and battery back-up systems, stereo equipment, video systems and games,
cameras, camcorders, cell phones, all palm equipment, DVD players and media, CD media, floppy
disks, phone equipment, microwaves and toasters
will be accepted electronic waste.
Items not accepted are general household trash,
appliances with refrigerant or appliances without
proof refrigerant has been removed, household
hazardous waste including chemicals, cleaners,
pool chemicals, fluorescent lamps and ballasts,
pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, medical, infectious or bio-hazard waste and batteries.

The Indiana law prohibits state laws that

a person’s ability to follow his or her religious
beliefs. The law doesn’t
mention gays, but opponents say it’s designed to
protect businesses and
individuals who don’t

asked lawmakers to send
him a bill clarifying the
intent of the law by the
end of the week.

Prep team won’t be charged for prank
NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va.
(AP) — Members of a West Virginia high school baseball team
will not face charges for a kidnapping prank on an interstate in
North Carolina, police said.
At least police eight cruisers
responded after a motorist reported seeing someone in a speeding
pickup truck on Interstate 74
waving frantically. The motorist told police that the person’s
mouth and hands were taped, Lt.
Patrick O’Toole with the High
Point Police Department in High
Point, North Carolina, told media
outlets.
Officers, with guns drawn,
pulled the vehicle over. They soon
determined that the kidnapping
was a prank, O’Toole said.

“As we were sorting through it,
it became apparent that this was
some sort of game. They thought
it was funny,” O’Toole told the
East Liverpool Review. “One of
them said they thought it would
be funny to scare some people.”
The incident occurred Sunday
as four members of the Oak Glen
High School baseball team and
their coach, Mathew Deveaney,
were traveling to a tournament in
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Police cited Deveaney, 26, of
Oakdale, Pa., for speeding.
“We have to treat it as if it’s
legitimate. We hope for the best
but prepare for the worst,” he
said. “We were just responding to
the information we were getting.
We have to stop the vehicle and

make an assessment.”
Hancock County Schools
Superintendent Suzan Smith
said she does not believe that the
students had ill intent. She and
school officials plan to meet with
them when they return to West
Virginia.
“When the lady saw that the
young guys, they were taped and
banging on the window and so
on, she took it very seriously,
and then the police have to take
it seriously, also,” Smith told
WTOV-TV.
“The school and myself both
will be talking to them, and it’s
something in today’s world you
really can’t have,” Smith said.
“But I imagine at our meeting I’ll
be doing most of the talking.”

Judge agrees to delay in suspect’s case
CINCINNATI (AP) —
A federal judge agreed
Wednesday to push back
deadlines in the “unusual and complex” case of
an Ohio man accused
of plotting to attack the
U.S. Capitol.
U.S. District Judge
Sandra Beckwith postponed pretrial filing
deadlines from April 10
to May 29 in the case of
Christopher Lee Cornell.
Federal prosecutors
had requested the delay,
and Cornell’s attorneys
did not object. Prosecutors pointed to the need
to work under special
federal procedures
meant to protect classified national security
information while preserving defendants’ fairtrial rights.
“The court has already
concluded that this case
is both unusual and complex,” Beckwith wrote.
Cornell, 21, who has

asked to be called by his
Muslim name, Raheel
Mahrus Ubaydah, was
arrested Jan. 14 outside
a gun shop after the FBI
said he bought two M-15
assault weapons and 600
rounds of ammunition.
The FBI said in court
documents Cornell wanted to “wage jihad.”
The suburban
Cincinnati man has
pleaded not guilty
to charges including
attempted murder of
government employees and officials. His
father has said he was
coerced and misled by
a government “snitch.”
Beckwith recently
refused to cut back
his jail phone access,
while ordering that
efforts to contact him
be authorized by his
defense attorneys.
Cornell’s attorneys
said he has been held
in isolation in Ken-

tucky’s Boone County
Jail and taking away his
regular phone access
could compromise his
ability to assist in his
defense and cause psychological harm.
Prosecutors had
expressed security concerns after Cornell told

a TV station he would
have gone to Washington and shot President
Barack Obama in the
head and carried out
other violence, if he
hadn’t been arrested.
Beckwith scheduled
a status conference for
June 1.

THEIR VIEW

Ensuring healthy
pregnancies,
mothers and babies
Giving our children a healthy start
in life begins with healthy pregnancies.
But far too many areas in Ohio
and across the country face a serious
maternity care shortage. In fact, one
quarter of Ohio counties lack access
to even one OB-GYN physician.
Sherrod
That’s right — 22 Ohio counties
Brown

For Ohio Valley
OB-GYN.
Newspapers
This is unacceptable. Healthy
pregnancies lead to healthy babies,
and no mother-to-be should go without the care
she needs.
We know the risks to both mothers and children forced to go without care. Each year more
than one million babies are born to mothers who
did not receive adequate prenatal care, and these
babies are three times more likely to be low birth
weight and five times more likely to die as infants.
Our state ranks 48th in the nation for overall
infant mortality and worst in the nation for African American infant mortality.
But despite the fact that there are nearly five
million women living in our state, there are only
around 1,100 OB-GYNs who practice in Ohio.
Nationwide, less than 50 percent of counties have
a practicing OB-GYN, and many women are forced
to drive an hour or more to get the care that they
need. And as any parent knows, good prenatal
care means multiple doctor’s appointments.
That’s why I’m working to pass the Improving
Access to Maternity Care Act, which would help
to reduce provider shortages in rural and underserved areas.
The first step to fixing this problem is identifying the areas where women are most in need. But
currently there is no designation for areas lacking
maternity care. My bipartisan bill would ensure
that the federal government designates maternity
care shortage areas, so we know where women are
in need of doctors.
The second step is providing incentives to
practices in these underserved, often rural areas.
The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) was
created in 1972 to fill health provider shortages
in underserved areas. It provides scholarships and
loan repayments in exchange for service in a site
NHSC has designated as in need of health care
providers.
My bill would help the NHSC fill the workforce
gap in newly-designated maternity care shortage
areas. This will allow us to target maternity care
resources where they’re most needed, and help
ensure healthier pregnancies, healthier mothers,
and healthier babies.
No woman should have to drive an hour or
more just to get to her doctor’s appointment.
Many expectant mothers work long hours, and not
everyone has easy access to reliable transportation. For women working minimum wage jobs and
women without cars, taking long stretches off of
work, transferring buses, and navigating public
transportation just to get to appointments can
become an insurmountable challenge.
We need to make sure every woman in Ohio has
access to a qualified OB-GYN. All parents should
be able to give their children the healthiest possible start in life.
Sherrod Brown is a Democrat U.S. senator from Ohio.

When she came out of the chapel, tears flowing down her face,
she threw her arms around us and

after the accident, the family was
embarrassed and moved away.
As we cried, I thought of Annie,
the sweet little girl that Scotty had
been such good friends with and
whom he had kept in touch with
from the time she moved away at
three years old. I asked how she
had taken it.
Scotty’s mother choked back her
tears so she could speak. “That’s
the strangest part of all. We had
just barely found out about the
accident ourselves when Annie’s
mother called and asked us what
had happened to Scotty. She said
Annie had just come to her and
said, ‘Mom, Scotty just came to
visit me and wanted me to know
that he is fine and said for me not
to cry for him.’”
And even though we cried, we
felt a surety that he was indeed
fine, for if anyone deserved God’s
approval, it would have to be a
young child who had showed his
love by saving the life of another.

By Alex Hawley

ahawley@civitasmedia.com

NELSONVILLE, Ohio
— Everyone loves a comeback story.
The River Valley softball
team trailed 5-2 through
three innings of play Tuesday night, but the Lady
Raider offense exploded over
the final four innings to take
a 16-8 victory over Tri-Valley
Conference Ohio Division
host Nelsonville-York.
The Lady Buckeyes (0-1,
0-1 TVC Ohio) marked two
runs in the bottom of the
first inning and added three
more runs in the home half
of the second. After being
held scoreless through the
opening three frames, River
Valley (2-0, 1-0) managed
to tie the game in the top
of the fourth with a five run
inning that was highlighted
by a two-out three run
double by Mariah Hurt.
The Lady Raiders added
two runs in the fifth inning
and six in the sixth inning,
which was highlighted
by a Katie Mares two-run
homerun. Nelsonville-York
ended its three-inning scoring drought with three runs
in the bottom of the sixth,
but RVHS marked three
runs of its own in the top
of the seventh to cap off the
16-8 win and their first ever
TVC Ohio softball victory.
The win in the record
book goes to River Valley
junior Ashley Gilmore,
who threw a complete
game with three strikeouts
and 10 walks. Alissa Kelly
suffered the setback for

NYHS, but struck out 11
and walked four.
RVHS senior and College of Wooster commit
Chelsea Copley led the
Silver and Black with a
triple, two singles, two runs
batted in, four runs scored
and two stolen bases. Gilmore marked two singles
with three RBI, three runs
scored and a stolen base,
while junior Cori Williams
marked a double, a single,
two runs batted in, two
runs scored and two stolen
bases.
Mares marked a home
run, two RBI and two
runs scored, Mariah Hurt
added a double, three RBI,
a run scored and a stolen
base, while Amanda Eddy
singled, scored a run and
drove one run in. Erin Morgan and Isabella Mershon
both singled, stole a base
and scored a run, while
Sydney Little scored once.
The Lady Raiders
finished with 16 runs, 12
hits and two errors, while
NYHS had eight runs, four
hits and six errors.
Patton led NYHS with
a triple, a single and three
RBI, Frazier added a triple,
while Kelly finished with a
double and two RBI.
The Silver and Black
will look to sweep the Lady
Buckeyes on April 17, in
Cheshire. RVHS returns to
the diamond on Thursday
when the Lady Raiders
host Alexander in their
home opener.

PROCTORVILLE, Ohio — The Gallia Academy

non-conference host Fairland claimed a 7-2 victory, in

Fairland (2-0) stuck first with a run in the bottom
of the third, but Gallia Academy (1-3) manufactured
a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game at one.
The Lady Dragons marked four run in the bottom of
the fourth, highlighted by a Ellen Hinshaw two-run
homerun.
The Blue Angels trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the
top of the fifth inning, but Fairland scored a run in
the bottom of the fifth and a run in the bottom of the
sixth to seal the 7-2 win.
Allison Shepherd was the winning pitcher of record,
allowing just two runs on two hits.
Kimberly Edelmann and Josie Loveday each had
a hit of the GAHS offense, which finished with two
runs, two hits and two errors.
Hinshaw, Mollie Morris and Mackenzie Riley each

Point Pleasant junior Karissa Cochran (24) races to first base as Sissonville’s Abbey Jordan makes a catch during Tuesday night’s nonconference softball contest in Mason County. Cochran was called out on the play.

Lady Indians outlast Point, 2-1
By Bryan Walters

bwalters@civitasmedia.com

POINT PLEASANT,
W.Va. — After starting
the year with a perfect
4-0 mark, the Point Pleasant softball team dropped
its second straight decision in as many outings
Tuesday night following
a 2-1 setback to visiting
Sissonville in a nonconference matchup in
Mason County.
The Lady Knights
(4-2) — who dropped a
2-1 decision at Ritchie
County Monday — never
led in the contest again,
as the hosts fell behind
1-0 after the first inning
of play. In fact, PPHS

went without a baserunner through 3.2 innings
— then mustered its only
offense of the night.
With two away in the
fourth, freshman Leah
Cochran belted a solo
shot to left-center field
— which gave Point its
first hit of the game and
a one-all tie through four
complete.
The Lady Indians
(3-0), however, responded in the fifth with a
leadoff single by Karli
Pinkerton, who managed
to advance to third on a
passed ball and a stolen
base. Alexee Haynes hit
a sacrifice fly to center
that eventually plated
Pinkerton, allowing SHS

to secure a 2-1 edge.
Point Pleasant managed only one baserunner over the next three
frames and committed
seven consecutive outs
to close the game, allowing Sissonville to sneak
away with the one-run
outcome.
The Lady Indians
outhit the hosts by a 5-2
overall margin and neither team committed an
error in the contest. SHS
stranded nine runners on
base, while PPHS left just
one stuck on the bags.
Karissa Cochran took
the tough-luck loss after
allowing two earned runs,
five hits and four walks
over seven innings while

striking out 15. Kendal
Perkins got the win after
surrendering one earned
run, two hits and zero
walks over seven frames
while fanning one.
Leah Cochran accounted for a hit, a run scored
and an RBI in the setback. Megan Hammond
also had a safety for the
hosts.
Pinkerton led the Lady
Indians with two hits and
two runs scored, followed
by Haynes, Perkins and
Katelyn Linville with a
safety apiece. Haynes and
Taylor Legg also had an
RBI apiece for the victors.

Lady Cats top
TVCS, 12-1
By Bryan Walters

bwalters@civitasmedia.com

ASHTON, W.Va. — The Hannan softball team picked
up its first win of the 2015 season in convincing fashion
Monday night during a 12-1 decision over visiting Teays
Valley Christian in a non-conference matchup in Mason
County.
The Lady Wildcats (1-2) never trailed in the contest as
the hosts plated six runs apiece in their only two innings at
the plate. HHS sent 11 batters to the plate and scored six
runs in the first, then followed by sending 13 hitters to the
plate for six more runs in the second frame.
Teays Valley Christian managed its lone run in the top
of the second after Lambert led things off with a single
and later scored on a passed ball, making it a 6-1 contest
midway through two innings. TVCS mustered two base
runners in the top of the third, but ultimately didn’t score
— allowing Hannan to secure the mercy-rule decision in
three frames.
The Lady Cats outhit the guests by a 5-2 margin and also
benefited from 13 walks. Valerie Randolph was the winning
pitcher of record after allowing one earned run, two hits and
five walks over three innings while striking out one.
Tamara Wilson led the hosts with three hits, followed by
Randolph and Rachel Adkins with a safety apiece. Wilson,
Adkins and Anna Taylor each scored twice in the triumph,
while Bailey Tolliver, Clarissa Crank, MaKayla Hoffman,
Jasmine Mayes and Shannon Akins scored a run apiece.
Lucas and Lambert had the lone hits for Teays Valley
Christian, with Lambert scoring the lone run. Lucas also
struck out two in the setback.

Tigers finally tested, beat Point 8-4
By Paul Adkins

padkins@civitasmedia.com

CHAPMANVILLE, W.Va. —
It’s been a cake-walk so far for
the Chapmanville Regional High
School baseball team.
The Class AA No. 2-ranked
Tigers have yet to be challenged so
far in the 2015 season.
That was about to change on
Tuesday night at Chapmanville’s
Ted Ellis Field as Class AAA Point
Pleasant came to town.
The Big Blacks, usually a strong
baseball program, figured to give
the Tigers a game.
They did just that.
But in the end, Chapmanville
still ended up doubling up on
Point as the Tigers won 8-4 and
improved to 6-0 on the season.
Heading into Tuesday night’s
home, the Tigers had outscored
their opponents by a whopping
91-2.
Chapmanville was led by Chris
Bailey and Alex Berry, who had
two hits each.
Bailey was the starting and winning pitcher for the Tigers. He
went 3.2 innings and allowed one
run and three hits with three walks
and two hit batters.
Berry came on in relief in the
fourth, hurling 1.1 innings and giving up two runs and one hit with

two strikeouts and one walk.
Austin Ellis entered for Chapmanville in the sixth as he fired
one inning and yielded one run and
one hit with one strikeout.
Senior lefty Trey Dalton then
closed the books on the Big Blacks
in the top of the seventh, fanning
one batter and hitting another.
Point Pleasant’s Jeremy Tate,
a left-hander, shook off a rocky
first inning in which he gave up
four runs. Tate settled down as he
retired 10 out of the last 11 batters
he faced. He still took the loss for
the Big Blacks as he allowed four
runs and four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Three other Point pitchers were
used — Tristan Austin and Ryan
Gerlauch in the fifth and Trevor
Porter in hte sixth.
Point cut it to 4-3 with a run in
the fourth and two unearned runs
in the fifth. The Big Blacks scored
in the fourth as Matt Richardson
doubled and came home on Caleb
Beckner’s RBI single.
Chapmanville, however, struck
right back with four runs in the
last half of the fifth to make it an
8-3 ballgame.
Jordan Cook had an RBI single
to make it 5-3. Josh Browning was
hit by a pitch with the bases loaded
to make it 6-3. Pinch-hitter Noah
Dingess then had the hit of the

or 12. We moved teams
to the Final Four, we were
regarded as the strongest
conference in those years,”
Delany said Tuesday in a
phone interview.
“This year, we didn’t
have as much success in
November and December,”
he added. “When I size up
our league, I really didn’t
think we were quite as
good as we had been. I
didn’t agree with the fact
that we weren’t pretty
good — but I didn’t think
we were as good as we had
been.”
As it turns out, they
were even better this year
come tournament time.
Wisconsin was the
league’s sole representative in the Final Four last
season. Now the Badgers
have company in Michigan
State, where coach Tom
Izzo is practically a regular
in the national semifinals.
“I did say all year, I tried
to stick up for our league.
Last year we were the best
two, three, four teams, so
that makes your conference
better,” Izzo said. “Sometimes I think the conferences should be ranked
on how teams 12, 11, 10
and 9 are. The depth of a
conference makes it differ-

ent because there (are) no
nights off.”
It has been a banner year
so far for the league beyond
men’s basketball.
Maryland and Rutgers
joined the conference this
season as the Midwest-centric league expanded eastward. The Terps surprised
the league in basketball
after finishing 28-7 overall
and 14-4 in conference
play, two games behind
Wisconsin.
In the women’s tournament, Maryland has
advanced to a second
straight Final Four.
Ohio State won the first
college football playoff in
January. The Big Ten also
had a good showing in
other high-profile games
on New Year’s Day when
Michigan State beat Baylor
and Wisconsin defeated
Auburn.
“We’re No. 1 in APR in
football, basketball and
women’s basketball,” said
Delany, referring to the
conference ranks in Academic Progress Rates. “We
had a great January bowl
season and national championship season. Taken
together, I think everybody
is feeling good and feeling
prideful.”

Tate had an RBI single in the

Chapmanville made it 4-0 in the

Tristan Thomspon ripped a oneout triple to the gap in right center
and socred on Bailey’s RBI single

Berry’s RBI single made it 2-0

score two more runs on a throwing error as Point Pleasant first
baseman James Littlepage’s foot
was pulled off the bag after a high
throw.
Austin Ellis also had a hit for
CRHS.
Chapmanville made two defensive gems in the game.
In the second inning, Thompson,
the Tigers’ senior shortstop, made
a leaping catch to his right on a
Beckner line drive.
Then in the third, pitcher Bailey

Zigmond for the putout.
Both teams had three errors in
