A HUNGER FOR MORE
God keeps
landing us safely God’s gifts make us all
Three men of the church and I
recently ministered on a mission trip to
the Philippines April 23-30.
Our Faith Baptist congregation
donated nearly $5000 to assist the
ministries of the Lighthouse Baptist
Church of San Fernando, Philippines,
Ron
the Rev. Edwin Pabalan, Pastor. We
traveled approximately 20,000 miles,
Branch
and were in airplanes for more than 40
Pastor
hours. But, I was thankful to the Lord
that He kept landing us safely, and that
He kept giving us trouble-free travel.
This thanksgiving prayer is very significant to me. I
am not very keen about being 35,000 feet in the air in
a winged tube that could inexplicably plummet fast to
the earth. Therefore, when we landed safely from the
first flight leg from Columbus to Detroit, I gave the
Lord thanks for travel safety and trouble-free travel.
I prayed the same prayer of thanksgiving when we
landed in Tokyo, Japan, and the same when we landed
in Manila.
But, then there was the two-hour road travel from
Manila to Angeles City (where we stayed), and our
daily traveling through that city’s traffic. Those who
have been to the Philippines, or even to Haiti where I
ministered last year in Port-au-Prince (which country
is ministered to by several local churches and missionaries), know what I am talking about when it comes to
motorist driving conditions. It is utterly chaotic from
the spontaneous slipping and slicing and darting and
dodging and close-calling horns-blaring traffic patterns
insanity that goes on.
I must say that it was simultaneously exhilarating
and entertaining in a tense sort of way (I promise
never again to fuss at another Ohio driver that pulls
out suddenly in front of me).
So, I thanked the Lord for travel safety and troublefree travel with the distinct understanding that travel
safety and trouble-free travel in this world in which we
live are not always a sure thing, although it may be a
usual blessing not to be taken for granted. Regardless,
the believer in Christ always has safety in the Lord.
God keeps landing us safely in His watch-care.
One of the most tender descriptions of God’s safety
for His people is “the shadow of His wings.” The
Psalmist certainly understood the safety of the Lord
when he wrote, “Be merciful unto me, O God, be
merciful unto me, for my soul trusts in you: yes, in the
shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these
calamities be overpast.”
We live in a world full of calamities, and, at times,
get caught up in calamities of one variety or another.
But, being under the shadow of God’s wings is terminology that anticipates the workings of God’s safety
on our behalf. As it involves God, “wings” refers to the
definiteness of God’s action, indicating quickness, and
ensuring protection. The Lord once told Israel, “I bore
you on eagle’s wings, and brought you unto myself.”
God carefully landed them safely, in so many terms.
A “shadow” is generally considered as constantly
varying until it ceases to be. But, not so with the
Lord. “The shadow of His wings” means that we have
the benefit of the shadow safety of God’s wings until
“these calamities be overpast.” Apostle James points
out, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from
above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with
whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”
So, what calamity presently assails you? God will
land you safely as you depend upon Him and trust in
Him. His shadow of safety never plays out.
When we landed safely at each point on our return,
I prayed the same prayer, “Lord, I thank you for travel
safety and trouble-free travel.” And, when I was delivered safely at my house, I prayed the same prayer.
I only wish that those airplane seats were a bit
wider. I need a bit more room than 17 inches.
The Rev. Ron Branch is pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Mason, W.Va.

Word stands the test of time
In Jeremiah 36, we read
the account of how the
prophet Jeremiah’s words
were brought to king
Jehoiakim and read in his
presence.
These words, which
foretold doom upon the
king and the city of Jerusalem because of their
sins, were brought to the
king’s attention by men
who were concerned for
the welfare of the nation
of Judah and wanted
to see it made secure
through repentance and
righteousness. No doubt
they hoped the king
would take the words
to heart. But instead,
Jehoiakim, as the words
were read to him, used
a knife to cut the page,
bit by bit, casting the cut
scraps into a fire (cf. Jeremiah 36:23).
When the scroll was
completely burned, the
wicked king no doubt
thought that he had heard
the last of them. But God
spoke again to Jeremiah
and the words were rerecorded. Moreover, in
598 BC, the Babylonians
invaded Judah and, after
a siege, sacked Jerusalem.
Jehoiakim did not live
to see the fall of his city
because he was killed during the siege and his body
was thrown over the wall
as so much refuse. The
word of God stood firm,
proved true, and the one

Daytona 500 champion Joey

decision.
“It’s not really his fault he got
hurt in the first place,” Logano
said at Dover. “He’s worked

If we race him for a championship at the end of the year,
great. I’m not going to say he
