Ohio State Hflhway Department. A recent report to Gov. DiSalle telll of it,
ereJtion of 2,174 miles of wbat are call·
ed "scenic routes" in Ohio . Unfortunately, as residents of what many COJIIider
the most scenic sec:tion of the state, are
very close to being !Jnored.
The report brags of being representa·
tive of the entire state, but a quiet
glanee at the lilltlnp of over 2,000 milea
of routes shows that if you draw a line
acroll the waist of the state from West
Virginia to Indiana the bulk of the seen·
lc routes are north of Ibis line.
The only dip Into southeastern Ohio

Meigs and Athens counties. Gallia, Jack·
son and Lawrence are forgotten.
Criteria used by the highway department people in selecting the routes In·
eluded:
-Intrlnalc scenic values that t h e
route affords.
-Variety of representation between
different landscapes traversed by the
route.
-The degree to which the route would
link specific scenic, historical. recrea·
tional, Industrial and aJricultural areas

Perbapa we should assume the potture that our section of Ohio needs no
ballyhoo, that we live In a domain recognized for its scenic brilliance. Our
Route 7 from Portsmouth to Marietta is
one of the moat scen!e drives in t he
nation . It even is recognized by travel
authorities of eastern seaboard newspapers and magazines. Only last week·

Does anyone know of more spectacu·

the heights above Pomeroy Bend, or
Fortification Hillin Gallipolis?
For years In the Fall and Spling this
section of Ohio has been a mecca for vi·
siton who appreciate the best In seen·

a combination of hills, streams and for·
