IDOlOR

Daily Sentinel periodically during the lulls between blood
giving days with the most woeful appearance. "Have you a
new idea that mi_ght help get more people out next Ume," she
has said. And adds. "We've just got to get at least 100 pints
every trip to be safe.''
The facts of the need and t h e truth obout blood credits
both have been spread to every cornor of this county 11 it
to every county in the United States We are little more or
little less responsive lhan other counties in our land. The job
of obtaining sufficient blood to keep strieken people alive,
and to make them well, remains everywhere.
It would be well. perhaps, lor us to review possible alternatives to the present method of securing needed blood. We
would suppose they might be:
.
1. L e t blood giving be on a commercoal baals entirely.
Those able to pay would Jive. Those unable would die. Con·
ceivably enough "protessional" blood givers would ·be -found
to satisfy the able· to-pay needs .
2 Let the Red Cross get out or this humanitarian ,program,
give It up for a hopeless task, and put the U, S. Oovornment
In This would amount to using pubhc funds (from.taxes) .to
purchase blood from donors which in turn would be Jlven m·
digent persons unable t o pay for ot. In this Cl8e 1 jlroof of
"paupery'' probably would be reqmred before blood was glv·
en free at government expense.
1'he first alternative appears outside the senslbilltiBI,of
Americans. We doubt seriously if many people w1111t thll sort
of a program That's the method we've left behind. Should
we progress backwards?
The second opens the door for f~rthe~ government ~control
into our daily lives with an added 1tem m the l!Ubllc budget
whlch it has been rumored is something resembling a very
taut rubber band already.
There may be other and less strik1ng alternative. While
we sit at home next Wednsday afternoon, instead of glvl!'g
blood think of some or them. Give your ideas to the public.
If there's a better way than that now practiced, we're sure
the Red Cross, the government, and unfortunate folks that
need blood would like to have them.
Meanwhile, co"¥' if you can to Ihe Pomeroy Junior High
gym next Wednesda-y . .tan. 301_ --c-=-=-:~c-c=-::-:=:::-

would suppose they might be:
.
