Poor l'ellef funds totaling $17,833,7 27 derived from the
I ·6 5% tax _paid by publlc utilitit:!s were distributed Monday by
~tat~ Audttor James A, Rhodes to Ohio's 83 counties. This is
10 addition to the $15,500,000 appropriated by the legislature
for poor relief during the current fiscal year.
The amount provided by the utihty tax for poor relief has
grown each ye11r a( th<! pnst three In 1956 it was $15,891,641.
In 1955 it was $14,933,028. This Increase reflects the increased taxable assets of tht• state's utilities. The totaol excise tax

paid by publle utllitles In 1956 amounted to $34,193,!35 with
$17,83S,727 going to the counties for poor fl!lief, aqd, $16,·

_The changes proposed would shift Memoriul Day to the Iilii

Poor Relief Mellon Distributed

359,407 going into the general revenue fund of the st.re. ·

Power companles paid more than twice as mucl:). aa any oth~

companies third and railroads four t h. As a hint of how hard a
tax is to take of( once It has been enacted, this uttllty Poor re·

lief tax is a good Indication . II was first approved in 1931 as
a deoression measure, but has continued ever since.

1\lelgs County's share in this greal mellon is $29,962. Only
VInton County of our close neighbors got less, it receiving $17,.
880. Athimo' Welfare Department is richer bv $76,661, Jock·
