Congressman Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, 6th District, looks over burlap sacks filled with coffee beans imported from Colombia, Peru and Ethiopia
with Lorraine Walker, owner of Silver Bridge Coffee Co., in Bidwell. The Congressman paid a visit to the Gallia County coffee roasting location
because, after having been introduced to the brand by a staffer in Washington, D.C. Johnson serves Silver Bridge Coffee to staff and guests
in his Washington, D.C., office and wanted to see for himself where the coffee he enjoys daily is roasted. Silver Bridge Coffee, which is sold at
various locations across Ohio and the surrounding region, is a national retail and wholesale coffee-roasting company known for printing the
roast date on each package. Walker explained show she and her husband, Phillip, began the business in 2008 (roasting coffee in a popcorn
popper) to the trials and tribulations — and many joys — of being a small business owner in southeastern Ohio. The congressman even tried
his hand at packaging a bag of coffee, which he was able to take with him after his visit was complete.

THEIR VIEW

New economic
impact
study planned
West Virginia Press Association

With its goal of helping more than $1 billion
in potential economic development into a reality,
a new economic impact study of the entire
Appalachian Development Highway System
(ADHS) is getting support from West Virginia.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is
working on an economic impact study of the
entire Appalachian Development Highway System.
The ADHS includes Corridor H in West Virginia,
as well as the completed highways of Route 19
through Summersville (Corridor L), Route 50
(Corridor D), I-68 (Corridor E), Corridor G from
Charleston to Pikeville and Corridor Q connecting
Monroe County to Virginia.
“This new economic study will look at the
impact of the highways themselves,” said Robbie
Morris, president of the Corridor H Authority.
“Aside from the obvious economic benefits of the
construction, there is lost opportunity for every
year that the system is not complete.”
The Robert C. Byrd Corridor H Authority
praised the ARC for the study.
The economic impact study comes 50 years
after the Appalachian system was started. The
ADHS was conceived as a way to connect land
within the rugged mountainous area stretching
from New York to Alabama to the nation’s
interstate highway system. Planned as a 3,090mile network of four-lane roads, more than 2,500
miles are complete, with many more under
construction.
“Eighteen months ago, the Corridor H
Authority commissioned an economic impact
study that found our region will lose $1.25 billion
if we do not complete Corridor H by 2020 instead of the currently expected 2036. We are
proud to have worked with the ARC to have
them incorporate these same lost-opportunity
economics in this study,” said Morris.
Corridor H is the last highway of the ADHS
in West Virginia to be complete. Seventy-six
percent of the highway is either finished or under
construction. West Virginia Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin
announced earlier this month that the next section
of the highway would go to bid later this year.
The section will begin near the community of
Kerens and head northeast toward Parsons. The
project will utilize a Public Private Partnership
for financing, allowing new construction in West
Virginia that may otherwise be hindered by

THEIR VIEW

Scholars overlook Adams’ role
By Dr. Gary S. Smith
Guest Columnist

As we celebrate our independence and astounding development from a fledging nation to
the world’s superpower, we should
applaud the extraordinary contributions of numerous founders.
One of them whose accomplishments are often overlooked is
John Adams. George Washington,
Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin
Franklin, James Madison, and
his cousin Samuel Adams typically receive the lion’s share of the
credit for the creation and early
success of the United States.
In fact, John Adams has frequently been viewed as “somewhat of a loser.” He is the only
president among the first five who
was not re-elected, his Federalist Party never again captured
the White House, and scholars
have not ranked him as a great
or near-great president. While
David McCullough’s best-selling
2001 biography and the acclaimed
2008 HBO miniseries depicting
his exploits increased public interest in his life, Adams still does
not receive the recognition he
deserves.
Consider these facts. Adams
played a pivotal role in the founding of the United States, especially
the campaign for independence,
the devising of state constitutions
and the establishment of America’s
diplomatic tradition. He was a delegate to the First and Second Continental Congresses, a diplomat to
France and Holland, a prodigious
political thinker, and the first vice
president and second president of
the United States.
Physician Benjamin Rush
claimed that “every member of

Congress in 1776 acknowledged”
Adams “to be the first man in
the House.” Jefferson simply
called him “our colossus on the
floor.” During the Revolutionary
War, Adams served on Congress’
Board of War and helped procure
European aid. The Massachusetts
Constitution of 1780, which he
principally authored, was “the
most important American source”
for the federal Constitution.
Scholars have rightly labeled
Adams a “radical firebrand,” the
American Revolution’s “premier
political theorist,” a competent
chief executive, and an influential
statesman in his post-president
years. His well-developed political philosophy, vital contributions
to American independence, and
impressive character all stand
out even in an era of remarkable
founders.
The only two men who could
not be removed from America
between 1774 and 1787 without
fundamentally changing its history, scholar Richard Ryerson
argues, were George Washington
and John Adams. “Their unique
combination of character, personality, talent and education” was
“required to design, initiate and
sustain the American Revolution.”
Adams, historian Paul Conklin
argues, surpassed “all other architects of American independence”
“in the scope of his contributions,
in the length of service and personal sacrifice, and in the sophistication of his political advice.”
Like Washington, as president,
Adams helped preserve America’s
neutrality. Facing threats of war
against France and England and
civil strife at home, Adams maintained America’s independence,
improved the navy, negotiated a

treaty with France, and worked to
end political disputes. The nation
was stronger and more prosperous
when he left office. Like Washington, Adams emphasized the
efficacy of education, the perils
of wealth, the necessity of private
and public virtue to America’s success, and the importance of religious liberty and toleration.
Today when many politicians
seem to be guided primarily by
opinion polls and concerns about
re-election, Adams’s approach to
political leadership is refreshing.
He urged citizens to choose leaders based on their character, education, experience and principles.
Statesmen, Adams argued, should
carefully study issues and situations, make judicious decisions,
and work to convince their constituents of the merit of their positions. As president, he searched
diligently and often alone to
determine the most prudent policies and courses of action. Adams
consistently sought to do what he
deemed best regardless of how the
public responded.
Adams’s faith played a vital role
in his long and distinguished life.
It significantly affected his worldview, determined his moral standards, helped shape his character,
and supplied many of his goals.
His belief that God governed the
world and directed the course of
nations and the lives of individuals
gave him the courage and confidence to fight passionately and
effectively for the causes he valued
and to contribute so significantly
to the birth and success of the
United States.

department at Grove City College and is a fellow
for faith and politics with The Center for Vision
& Values.

A look at ‘15 Meigs Co. football schedules
By Donald Lambert
elambert@civitasmedia.com

As the 2015 football season gets
closer, the time has come to take
a closer look at the football schedules in each county of Ohio Valley
Publishing. Today, we will focus on
the teams in Meigs County.
The Meigs County squads are
looking to rebound after finishing
the 2014 campaign with a 14-16
overall mark, which included zero
playoff appearances between the
three local programs.
Despite losing two of their first
three games, both Meigs and
Eastern were able to claw their
way back to .500 after each team
finished their respective gridiron
campaigns at 5-5. Southern also
finished its season at 4-6 overall.
Here’s a brief look at each team’s
2015 schedule, as well as some
notes headed into the fall campaign.
Meigs Marauders
The Marauders are looking to get
back to their winning ways from the
2013 season, when the Maroon and
Gold finished with a 7-3 mark. Meigs
ended the 2014 season on a two-game
winning streak and finished third in
the TVC Ohio standings, despite being
outscored by opponents by a 346-320
overall margin.
MHS lost nine seniors to graduation,
but the Marauders will come back with
plenty of determined starters for the
2015 season.
The Marauders, whose only
appearance in the postseason came
in 2008, have replaced non-league

games against Coal Grove, Fairland and
Ironton with contests against Jackson
and Amanda Clearcreek, as well as the
Week 1 opener against Gallia Academy.
Mike Bartum will be entering his fourth
season as head coach of the Meigs
Football program.

all the speculation and intrigue surrounding Kevin Love’s foray into the
free agent market, the star power forward ended up right where he said he
would all along — in Cleveland.
Love announced in The Players
Tribune on Wednesday that after his

uneven first season ended with a serious shoulder injury, he is coming back
to help LeBron James finish what
they started together last season.
“We’re all on the same page and
we’re all in,” Love wrote. “We have
unfinished business and now it’s time
to get back to work.”

Briefs

Love agreed to terms on a maximum contract of five years that could
be worth more than $110 million, a
person with knowledge of the deal
told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details
have not been released. No NBA contract can be signed until July 9.

Love opted out of the final year of
his existing contract to hit the open
market, a financially motivated decision aimed at getting more security
after suffering some significant injuries over the last few years.
